They've always been close in real life. They were joking about the habit of the media to claim stars of shows really hate each other. Gen agreed to play herself as long as they could all make fun of themselves. Misha live tweeted those things as the episode was shown.
Bob Singer didn't name Bobby after himself. The character was originally just Bobby. When they needed a sign for his salvage yard, the design team used the name Singer as a joke.
The tweets "Misha" tweeted were real. In a scene, the producers comment on how Jensen is living with Jared. In real life, Jensen Ackles did live as a roommate in Jared Padalecki's house in Vancouver during season 4, before they got married their wives and move in with them. The no talking thing between Jared and Jensen was only a joke (in real life they were groomsmen in each other’s wedding). They wanted to poke fun to the industry and present the actors as douchebags. Jensen’s trailer and Jared’s house were not real. The triptych portraits of Jared and Genevieve were created for the episode. Misha Collins said he tried to "douche the character up as much as possible." The scene where he pushed the hair lady away was improvised by him. The picture of Jared’s and Gen’s wedding was real. The idea for "Jared" to have an alpaca in his backyard came from Jared Padalecki and Genevieve Padalecki's real-life honeymoon trip to Machu Picchu.
That scene where the guy so easily dodges a bullet confused a lot of people, but in the behind the scenes commentary on the DVD set they explain that was supposed to be their director of photography, Serge Ladouceur, who had a reputation for being utterly unflappable. So it was kind of like an inside joke that even in the event of gunfire that he would be the one who'd remain calm and cool as always.
I have been waiting all season for this episode. Truly the best of season 6, the most meta you can get in Supernatural. Fun fact: did you know that Misha actually tweeted those things in real time during those scenes? I find that hilarious that no one really knew what the context was. That shit eating grin he got during one of those scenes means he was having the time of his life punking the fans. 😂
The greatest meta episode ever!!!’ Also Jensen & Jared are actually pretty tame and normal for actors, this episode went a little overboard with there personal lives,it’s part of why I love them so much
Some BTS ttrivia: The only crew members who played themselves were stunt coordinator Lou Bollo, who sadly passend away last year, and J2's stunt doubles Mike Carpenter and Tod Scott. Robert Singer was played by Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray's brother. He was recommanded for the role by one of the show's writers, Eugenie Ross-Leming, who is Robert Singer's wife in real life! Another important Person in the crew is the driver Clif. Clif Kosterman is/was Jared and Jensen's personal bodyguard and driver. The real Clif played Tiny in season 2 ep 19 "Folsom prisom blues". And last not least: the director of this episode, Charles Beeson, passed away in 2021. R. I. P. Chuck, and thank you for this wonderful, hilarious piece of television 🤗.
The writers checked with Jensen and Jared who okayed the episode as long as it wasn't trying to be too accurate so lots of things were unrealistic and joking.
They wanted the the alternative reality to not be ours but to be ours “adjacent”. So not their real places, the relationship dynamic isn’t the same, etc. This is a top 5 episode for me. It was hilarious even if they decided to not go overly accurate. Fun fact - the wedding photo was placed without Jared’s knowledge so seeing it in the scene was a surprise to not just the character but the actor as well
Most tv sets have actors that do not get along and do not talk off set. SPN was known for having a great cast and crew with J2 feeling like brothers. Thus the running joke about talking to each other.
One of my favourite episodes, was so excited to see youve finally got to it also quick edit for info: They changed the actors personal lives bc they weren't comfortable with their real lives and homes being on screen, and ofc just for more entertainment value. Misha also actually tweeted all those things during filming and fans didn't know what was going on till this aired
I’m sure you’ve already been told, but Jared and Jensen get along really well, and guest stars will say how nice the SPN set is- including cast and crew. It’s more a joke about other toxic sets in the industry. Also, Robert Singer has said that Kripke named the Bobby Singer character while the IRL Robert Singer was out of town, as a joke. Lol.
In the movie Blazing Saddles there’s a scene where the film goes meta. The actors literally break a studio wall and end of on the scene of a musical. The song being sung is called The French Mistake. If you don’t know that movie, watch it.
Many of the crew and directors had worked on X Files, the "lead actors won't talk to each other/don't like each other" trope was a dig at X Files and shows like it. And yes, Jared and Jensen are very close.
Misha asked the writers to make him seem like a total douchebag, and didn't think they did enough, so he added things like pushing the makeup girl away, and saying "thanks little guy" to one of the crew, etc. Fun fact - his manager saw the episode and called him to say that it was nice to see him "acting as yourself." Misha was so insulted, he fired his manager. LOL
There are a few "inside" jokes in this one. They never really had any major fights but the celeb gossip was always claiming they weren't talking and nonsense like that - leads of shows usually have drama and if they don't the gossip sites invent it. And when they respond "where?" to Misha being ended it was a joke, they were showing how unsurprising it would be that Misha would be the one to go out like that, it makes more sense if you know how "spontaneous" Misha is known to be. lol
The title, The French Mistake - That's the closing song in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles.. it happens while they're breaking the 4th wall. That Ackles bio.. mostly accurate.. his birthday is 3-1, not 6-1 He was on Days..and all the others and did win a Soap Digest award.
Little fun fact: When Misha started to tweet he was pranked, that was something he actually always did with Jensen and Jared because they would always do pranks on each other mostly to Misha to get him to brake character.
I don't know if Jared and Jensen ever had any actual falling out that they could be referencing, or if they are just playing on a trope. But I do like how on-board it seems everyone was to joke about themselves and the show, and/or make funny shit up about themselves. I remembered seeing a quote from the commentary track with writer Ben Edlund and Bob Singer, where they talked about Misha this episode: "Ben Edlund: [Misha] was really, really enthusiastic to kind of warp the perception of him. There’s one moment in here where he actually pushes away an assistant and I kind of wish I pushed that a little bit more, like it was his idea and I think it works really well. He was really enthusiastic which was great. Bob Singer: Yeah, we were worried about shooting ourselves in the foot and Misha was ready to shoot himself in the brain. Ben Edlund: [laughing] He was loading six guns at once." The part of "we were worried about shooting ourselves in the foot and Misha was ready to shoot himself in the brain" is great; I love the idea of the producers being perhaps a bit hesitant about how far to take it, and at least some of the actors just being ready to go all in 😂❤
The original writer that they killed in this episode? He actually named the chanacter of Bobby, as a way to fuck with Robert Singer. He kept the joke going in The Boys, when he cast Jim Beavers as a senator? Congressman? named Bob Singer.
FYI: 1. I don't think any of the producers/directors/etc. are the real people. They're all actors. "Eric Kripke" was also an actor. 2. The whole thing about how "Jared and Jensen weren't talking/are finally talking again" was based on false rumor. A lot of the stuff they did on this episode was based on false/ridiculous rumor that they ran with to make the episode funnier. Jared and Jensen are like best friends irl. 3. The character Bobby was only supposed to be on the show for one episode, so whoever named him Bobby Singer, after the director Robert Singer, did it as a joke. It was supposed to be a one-off.
Yeah Jared and Jensen are like brothers in real life, the lived together, got married at the same time, they live next door to one another with their families and their kids call the other one 'uncle.' These two love one another more than anything. They truly are brothers.
There were a few of the actual crew members who were in this episode. I don't know which ones though. Jensen was okay with the episode making fun of him, as long as he stayed in character as Dean during it. He didn't want to go out of character at all. The stuff about Jared's house was all exaggerated He doesn't have a house that large or extravagant, and none of those big art pieces of himself. Well, not until this episode. He did keep the one with him in the cowboy hat, but auctioned off the Andy Warhol type paintings for charity at a convention. .Jensen, Jared and Misha (J2M) have talked about this episode several times at conventions, so we've been able to get a lot of behind the scenes info. It was funny hearing them talk about how difficult, but fun, it was to act like they couldn't act. Playing Sam and Dean, playing Jared and Jensen, playing Sam and Dean.
This is a fan favorite! I love the meta too ! Like when chuck was introduced. Much more great ones to come ! Misha actually tweeted those tweets too when this episode first aired ! Dean seeing all the fake baby’s 😂
Jensen and Jared had a disagreement in S1, but they reconciled it and decided that they had to work together to make the show work. They became close, like real brothers and ended up living as neighbors in Austin, Texas and their wives are also close friends.
That dude that got shot at and he leaned back to avoid getting shot and walked off like a boss was a actual crew member I bet lol that's funny how this matched how some stuff you saw in behind the scenes stuff back in season one like the mirror thing they did have so many photos surrounding it lol
Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean playing Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean, that was hilarious and i doubt its ever been done before. Seriously funniest scene in the whole show IMO. This episode is my fav of the funny eps but not my overall fav as that doesn't come till season 11's Baby. As others have stated not their real trailer or house, they were made to look more... extravagant. And they were always really close friends in real life as well, even living together at one point. Even now with the show over and both moved on to other projects and not seeing each other everyday they still consider themselves family and get together a lot. In regards to the ep I love that they took the risk of going all out and not just breaking the 4th wall but demolishing it for this episode. This could have turned out all kinds of bad if tried by less talented writers, actors and crew but in the hands of SPN it worked out beautifully. Oh and when they asked Jared and Jen to do this ep Jen's only requirement was that he stay in character as Dean throughout. He didn't want to play Jensen unless it was Dean acting as Jensen, which is likely why they become J2 and not have J2 in the episode as well.
So she got pregnant in aug of 2011 and had a boy in March of 2012 I remembered that because Jared brought little tommy too the SPNCON in October of 2012 in Chicago I was there it was a fun ass time.
Wait? Jensen was in the Smallville series? I don't remember him. But then again it was years ago. UPDATE: I just went and checked online he played Jason Teague, the boyfriend of Lana Lang. Yep, l remember that character now.
I guess the 9000$ are due to the size and the shipping, cuz in my city you can bough a piece of St. Rafael hand bones for $500 mnx (29.4 USdollars) in his sanctuary
There's a couple times they do hint at Jared later being walker Texas ranger like they knew eventually he was going to that how lol was just a joke or coincidence lol
Bob singer ? that was Eric kripke lol they ain't going to get that show he was writing octa something That bob singer was saying they'll buy anything lol really he shot both of them so that's probably what you were saying lol it was hilarious he kept shooting Eric and he just kept coming lol that scene in gun shop was basically that scene in terminator lol
This is probably my least favourite season but I could never hate it because it gave us this gem of an episode 😂
this one and episode 4 are gems

J2 are best friends and see each other as brothers. Top tier episode of the show!!

LOL that is actually incredible. Love that
It wasn't Bob Singers idea to have a character named after him. That was all Kripke, as far as I know.
The greatest meta episode ever!!!’
Also Jensen & Jared are actually pretty tame and normal for actors, this episode went a little overboard with there personal lives,it’s part of why I love them so much
I love this episode. Deadpool is known for breaking the 4th wall... Supernatural will play friggin jump rope with it. xD

@@ad0nisma yup, totally for real. :)
I knew about all of this (and most other BTS for this episode) but I didn't know the part about his manager 😳
Jared & Jensen "acting" is too funny - Makes me laugh everytime, one of my favorites episode
Poor Dean realizing Baby is a fake prop.. 😂😂😂
pain lolol
This episode is ICONIC

Suddenly want to rewatch Dark Angel
Dark Angel was a good show, hate that they canceled it.
I believe Dark Angel is available only on DVD.
The title, The French Mistake - That's the closing song in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles.. it happens while they're breaking the 4th wall.
That Ackles bio.. mostly accurate.. his birthday is 3-1, not 6-1
He was on Days..and all the others and did win a Soap Digest award.

Golden era of tumblr circa 2012-2016 was FERAL for Supernatural. There was reaction gifs and references on damn near every post. It was so wild.

good to see both ankles make it in the acting world lol

what a fun episode! It was also fun to watch 'the fans' try to one up each other over what was from their real life and what wasn't on the websites :P
Jensen and Jared had a disagreement in S1, but they reconciled it and decided that they had to work together to make the show work. They became close, like real brothers and ended up living as neighbors in Austin, Texas and their wives are also close friends.
As I recall, Misha actually tweeted this during filming.
Jensen and Jared were hilarious in this episode.
by far one of the funniest episodes
I loved Dark Angel. I was tragically depressed we only ever got two seasons. I have it on DvD bc I am obsessive.
Same here. And I got the books that continued the story. Took me forever to find them.
supernatural literally killing their own showrunners in season six is top tier
I’ve been waiting for this episode since the beginning
That was Eric not Robert that named character after him lol

They should just do like Gabriel taught them in changing channels play your roles you're supposed to be actors so be actors lol
I have been waiting do long for the lock and key part
And he didn't react to that part, guess it wasn't funny
He'll yeah they were the number one show on cw for decades lol

You think that Padaleki is hard? Its not even how you spell his name. Its Padalecki which is polish surname and correct pronoun. is "Padaletski".
