Do you hear that? It's her voice accompanied by almost no background music whatsoever. The quality of her voice speaks for itself, this is a solid testament of what a true singing artist is.
Netflix serie Lost Ollie brought me here. Such a magical voice and beautiful lyric which fits perfectly an also beautiful and touching serie . I feel lucky for having find this masterpiece!
Wow! I have never heard anything like this before. Very soulful, ethereal. It felt as if this music was rising from the depths of the ocean, coming to take me home.
One of many underrated artists in the industry... Sara not only writes and sings beautifly but provides so much emotion with her voice that is almost impossible not to love her.
Every time I listen to this song I feel like it needs to be played alongside images of war or destruction. Like in a movie where everything has just been lost. It gives me the feeling of tragedy and despair, reminiscing about 'another time' when everything was peaceful and beautiful.
jrocksmistress This song really reminds me of a very famous folk song from my culture called The Evening Bells. I hope you’re able to see the link and click on it, but this is my all time favorite version of this song. It has this same nostalgic feel. The images in the video are the aftermath of of battles throughout Russia during WWII. Here’s just the first verse of the song in English. It was inspired by Sir Thomas Moore’s poem. Those evening bells! Those evening bells! How many a tale their music tells, Of youth, and home, and those sweet time, When last I heard their soothing chime. ua-cam.com/video/LI0yKMO6J9Y/v-deo.html
This is the slowest I've ever fallen in love with a song; but I was hanging onto every word. Love that this is a capella for most of it, the dynamics are perfect and the placement of the chorus is lovely. This is definitely my new favourite song!
I would go so far as to say that her humming is one of my favourite parts, I've been lightly humming those few phrases for most of today and had to look it up to hear it again!!
There is not enough time in the day to live all the lives we want to live. Thank you, Sara, for finding a way to express the emotions involved in choosing a path and the nostalgia of a time of freedom and infinite possibilities.
This song is powerful, touching and could move you to tears. I see this like a dream where you're walking through memories slowly feeling you could almost touch them all leading to this one last moment where you find true bliss and endlessness. It's beautiful! I have fallen in love with this song and am in awe. Amazing job Sara. So glad I discovered your music and found this one looking for more.
This is another one of those songs where I listen to it one sunny morning, and I close my eyes and meditate to the syllables and melody, not understanding a single word for I forget how the words are formed, and only the syllables exist in my ears, and I am put in a different world as my eyes are shut. And then the song ends, and I open my eyes, and the light in my room is changed from the dim rising sun through the window, and it now is aglow with a yellowy haze and the air itself is magic and it lifts into my lungs. And while I did not hear a word of the song and still its words are unbeknownst to me, I now see more than I did before without words.
The voice! Its sooo.. out of the world melodious. I don't think anyone could have pulled that 2 minutes and 40 seconds of vocals without a single beat of music. And i love the way she held the whole song together!
Music truly crosses every border. This song used to calm me down during the revolution in my hometown. I used to hum this rhym to every baby in the family I babysat for and the would sleep so quickly. This song reminds me of home so much. I cant go back home after we fled the war. All I have now is memories bound to music that can never me forgotten ❤
What a voice, Sara. No scooping, no affectation, just straight up power singing. It's a lost art among today's singers. I've always thought you had a wonderful voice since I first heard you on, of all things, One Tree Hill. I forgot to keep listening and am so glad I heard this song today for the first time. Brava!
Three years ago my best friend committed suicide, we had these dreams when we were in high school that after we'd be done and graduated with college we would move to L.A. Whenever I hear this song, it brings me to those days when we were full of hope.
Its not even 1 minute and I'm already in tears. This song isn't even a song it's just something so majestic and pure and soulful I can't even exactly explain😭💜
It's bizarre that people find this soothing, this is, for all intents and purposes, a requiem, a bittersweet recollection of a past that is no more; it's just that, as the tragedy of coming to terms with the loss of our own past self unfolds, there isn't even a point in dying, so - according to the lyrics - we keep going until the caducity of life, inevitably, catches up to us.
But when you are old enough, a requiem can be relaxing. The song is VERY sad, but when you get to the point you where you look back, and ponder, and know there probably aren't many major decisions left to make, just play the cards you have
This is probably one of the most beautiful things i have ever heard. Tragedy, relief, loss, self....Ugh this is speaking to my soul. Ive missed real music so much.
I am the kind of person that don’t say much. Live my life day by day, and not surprised on too much in this world these days. BUT!! This song cough my attention. Very surreal, calming and takes you back in the past -to that place where you were the most tranquil. I would love to see a video made to this song. GOOD JOB SARA!!
May god bless anyone who is listening to this song and needs help. I know what you are going through. I lost my dad a year ago when he was killed by his girlfriend and drugs. Good god please help us out in these difficult times.❤️🙏🏻
I love how at for the first 3 verses it is just her angelic voice, then a slow beat comes in and there are backing singers assisting her. it just makes this song so harrowing and pure brilliance
When I was younger (maybe 12-17) I would listen to this song as a lullaby to help me sleep. I've suffered from pretty bad depression and anxiety for most of my life due to childhood trauma, and this song has been an anchor in the storm for me. I used to sing it on repeat for hours.
Oh Sara Bareilles, why aren't you constantly at the top of the music charts? You have the ability to see what's in other's hearts and and give it words. Masterful song writer.
Once upon another time Somebody’s hands who felt like mine Turned the key and took a drive Was free I recall the sun sank low Buckley on the radio Cigarette was burning slow So breathe Just yellow lines and tire marks Sun-kissed skin and handle bars And where I stood was where I was To be No enemies to call my own No porch light on to pull me home And where I was is beautiful Because I was free Once upon another time Before I knew which life was mine Before I left the child behind Be I saw myself in summer nights And stars lit up like candle lights I made my wish but mostly I Believed And yellow lines and tire marks Sun-kissed skin and handle bars And where I stood was where I was To be Once upon another time Deciding nothing good in dying So I would just keep on driving Because I was free

Actually Sara's song writing skills are incredible. Her songs are beautifully touching while still maintaining a sense of being human. You obviously haven't tried to listen to what she's actually saying here. "Once upon another time, before I knew which life was mine, before I left the child behind be. I saw myself in summer nights and stars lit up like candle light. I made my wish but mostly I believed." That's so eloquently written without having tried too hard. This song is beautiful.

This song helps so much I've listened to it so many times recently I lost my house to hurricane Harvey we have nothing to go back to and then I knew I have the voice of an angel to listen to crying is about the only thing I can do for now I love you thanks for the song it really helps
I know this happened almost a year ago but I’m so sorry you had to go through that!! I can’t imagine what losing your home must’ve felt like 😢 Hope you’re safe and sound now!
My father is slipping away. It is just a matter of hours, not even days. I find this so comforting, remembering how it was, once upon another time. I wish I could be innocent again.
I hate choosing favourites because they change but I think it's safe to say this my favourite Sara Bareilles song. The EP is so stunning, raw and mature.
I first heard Sarah doing a cover of Yellow Brick Road. Shortly after this time, my father passed, a lot of health issues hit me and. I had a breakdown and ended up in the psyche hospital. When I got out, depressed as can be. I went to look up other songs from her and clicked this. I never cry at songs, but at the end, when she says's "Once upon another time. I decided there's nothing good in dying" I just lost and wept.
When I put my daughter to bed I have to endure some annoying films until one night we watched list Ollie ..I was hooked then in the final episode this song came on it blew me away so sad ..amazing song x
I feel like I'm swimming all the time, drowning when my feet are too tired to keep paddling and my arms are weak and numb. I always think back to my childhood when running miles was no problem at all, when ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was the biggest treat and the best thing that could ever happen. When my mother took care of everything and my father taught me to live pridefully. This song just takes me back to those times and I feel like I can float and breathe. It's so beautiful.
Better freeze this moment. Just played Sara singing OUAT. Its Aug 2, 2019. Peace and beauty, here at 3am. I've stopped to drink it in. Later, there'll be pain again. Stopping now to enjoy her voice. She owns a special blessed sound.

This woman is so incredibly underrated as a songwriter, a vocalist and a performer.
Nope, she's amazing and will be. Accolades are coming ;)

Netflix serie Lost Ollie brought me here. Such a magical voice and beautiful lyric which fits perfectly an also beautiful and touching serie . I feel lucky for having find this masterpiece!
For me, the essence of this song is in the line "Before I knew which life was mine." I can remember that feeling and that sense of freedom.

i agree.
Also agree, took me time but now i hear the beuty in this song. She is really special, and so amazing.
:)
totally
Try going through all of her songs... they’re all my favorite 😂
Not every singer can pull off that much a capella or humming with such a perfect sound.
I even love listening to her hum...
I would go so far as to say that her humming is one of my favourite parts, I've been lightly humming those few phrases for most of today and had to look it up to hear it again!!
In my opinion, that's the best part ...it brings back memories
That hum was enough for a Grammy.
I also..
I will never tire of her voice. I swear her music takes me to such a calm place.
Wow!...This is my first time hearing this song. Does anyone else think Sara is way underated??

Sara is a storyteller when she sings. I love her so much. She makes you feel like she is on your side when you are having a hard time in life.
That's how I felt when I listened to Orpheus.

Oh God, this is so beautiful my ears might burst into tears
my camp counselor sang this every night to get all of us to sleep but no one went to sleep cause we wanted her to sing it
That must've been amazing. That's a perfect memory to associate with this nostalgic song.
How is this song not in a movie!? Haunting opening to a sci-fi, gut wrenching reveal in a suspenseful drama, so much potential.

Singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, funny and I bet she can act too. She is a gift.
Sara’s heartbreak inhabits every inch of this EP. 😓 Thank you Ben Folds for helping our dear, dear girl get back on track.

This has become my favorite song. Sarah Bareilles is truly just a wonder.
wow. unlike anything I've ever heard. simply stripped down and stunning. thank you, Sara
She is a master of the stripped down, the authentic. I would travel far to see her in concert, but she isn't on tour this year. Sigh.
Is the stripped down a musical technique?
This song is a masterpiece.

Once upon another time
Somebody’s hands who felt like mine
Turned the key and took a drive
Was free
I recall the sun sank low
Buckley on the radio
Cigarette was burning slow
So breathe
Just yellow lines and tire marks
Sun-kissed skin and handle bars
And where I stood was where I was
To be
No enemies to call my own
No porch light on to pull me home
And where I was is beautiful
Because I was free
Once upon another time
Before I knew which life was mine
Before I left the child behind
Be
I saw myself in summer nights
And stars lit up like candle lights
I made my wish but mostly I
Believed
And yellow lines and tire marks
Sun-kissed skin and handle bars
And where I stood was where I was
To be
Once upon another time
Deciding nothing good in dying
So I would just keep on driving
Because I was free

It kinda sounds like autumn leaves. it feels like the melody wants to revolve around a circle of fourth chord progression.
Klaod Nell both songs I love very much.
I almost feel there’s a classic Disney element in the song. Something very Cinderella-ish or Sleeping Beauty (with the humming for the most part).
