    Lyrics:
    So goodbye, yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
    Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
    Beyond the yellow brick road

Sir Elton John: "I was so blown away by the version of Yellow Brick Road. I've never heard anyone sing one of my songs like that ever. I can't thank you enough, giving your time and blowing my mind with that version. Because when someone sings your songs they usually copy you and she made it her own. That's brilliant--it's a hard song."

Because we no longer live in the era of the songwriter, we live in the era of the hitmaker. You can be both, but only the latter is necessary for maximum profit. Watch American Idol - much as I have enjoyed that as a talent show, it is solid proof that the most talented and/or most original do not usually win America's votes. Instead, the most votes go to the biggest crowdpleaser, even if it's just pleasing by way of lowest common denominator. Guy with guitar sings somewhat catchy, easily singable songs, has vaguely likable personality, gets the most votes. Depending on the audience you are trying to appeal to, there are different lowest common denominators, but songcraft, lyricism, and even extreme talent are not premium needs for modern success.
I don't think older generations were necessarily better or smarter. I suspect they would have fallen for mass-produced stuff just as much (and in some cases, we can see that they did). It wasn't the dominant form of the entire music industry back then, but I think that's just because record companies took a while to figure out the formula.

Found this video again. Every once in a while, if we're lucky enough, we get to see an artist cover a classic without ruining it and compromising it's original integrity. And then, even more rarely, we get to see this - an artist who not only fully respects the original composition, but takes it to a completely new place and an even higher level. This version walks that fine line between originality of it's own, while paying homage to Elton John, and at the same time magically creates something so brilliant and powerful. Sara has pulled this off in a stellar way, much like Johnny Cash did with the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". Simply spellbinding and moving.....

my younger son just introduced me to this hauntingly hypnotic version. Sara flexes an amazing range as well as perfect timing of transitioning from tender to forceful and back to tender. unlike so many of the performers from AGT and The Voice, Sara sings in her own cocoon, lost in the world of Elton and Carole, and away from the vanity of today's cheap knockoffs. this version is amazing.

    Insanely talented singer and writer.
I'll admit, when I first heard "love song" on the radio years ago I thought Sara was just another mainstream female pop/indie singer. What I later found was that I had completely misjudged the depth of that song in particular, and then came to search for more of her music and realized what natural skill and creativity she fosters.
I've heard "Yellow Brick Road" by Elton growing up my whole life - but it wasn't until I came across this rendition a few months ago that I was able to finally feel and understand the meaning and value of this song. Not only does she hit every note with precision, she simultaneously creates a very fluid and free sound that would seem to contrast but does not.

I've loved Sara for many, many years! Quite a while ago, I accidently read a tweet where two of her friends or fans (not sure which) were talking about her and they talked about how much she swears (especially the 'F' word!); They were totally okay with it and thought it was funny - which it can be, because I use it often when I speak with my sister...lol. Although, that just in private, and apparently Sara says it in public, like on stage sometimes. My daughter is in her early 40's, runs her own company, and says the 'F' word in front of clients and when writing - I just find it so unprofessional! But I'm just an old lady now, so I guess I'm aging out of being 'cool' although I do still know what 'really cool' is - it's Sara Bareilles!!!

Had never really paid much attention to the lyrics before hearing this version, previously had just enjoyed the music. Your statement about the twisting of the soul is so accurate. I don't tend to be very emotional but hearing this for the first time literally brought tears to my eyes. Have not had a reaction to a song like this since the first time I heard Eva Cassidy sing What A Wonderful World, and People Get Ready, and Bridge Over Troubled Water, her versions of these are also emotionally gut wrenching because you can almost feel her soul and passion in her voice as she belts out those lyrics. Sara's singing is much the same.

3:15 jesus. I am just listening to this on stereo headphones with youtube's crappy audio codex and it still blows me away. The note is so powerful that it's almost discomforting to hear it. I cannot imagine what it was like to be in that room and soak in it.

One of the most heart-shredding performances I've ever heard in my life (of ANY song). Amazing.

I can only imagine how the audience must’ve felt when they heard this live for the first time... first time I heard this album and arrangement a couple years ago, my mouth was on the floor. She is amazing live, and every musician or music lover needs to see her once in their life. I’m fortunate enough to have seen her multiple times now.

Saw her live in Chicago in 2019 at the United Center. Sara live is awesome. It's not only her amazing voice that sets her apart in her live shows, but she also takes great care to assure the audio is impeccable. I've see too many shows where the audio is fuzzy or distorted or the vocals get buried by the instruments. WIth a voice like hers you want to be able to take in every nuance. What you hear in her live UA-cam videos is exactly what you will hear in ther live performances. Plus you get hugged by her lovely personality and her gracious nature, live, in real time. From her opening moments on stage to her presumably inevitable encore of Gravity she is funny, authentic, sweet and saucy. On top of all that she drops the F-bomb and a few other choice words in her segways, which in my book just adds to her charm. If you ever get a chance, check her out live on stage.

This is how a song should be covered - a newly envisioned body with the original bones.

You know somebody is talented when the audience sits in silence and doesn’t sing along, especially to such a popular song. The audience can hear and feel every note. She has a rare and underrated talent.

I love the audience's reaction to listening, the adults are tearing up and the kids are just purely in awestruck. It's a moving performance, though quite different from the original but still impressive.
