The name of the patient is engraved... man, this may help so many forensics in the future... 😂
Next, Just gotta make sure they put it in correct knee.
Something similar happened at my place. Fishermen noticed a drum floating in the sea, with fat leaking through sides. They pulled it ashore, it stinked, police found the drum was filled with concrete. They broke it and found some skeletal remains. One leg bone had an implant (metal rod for fracture). It had batch number. Found out the hospital to which that batch was sold, listed the people who got that batch, checked who among them was missing. The mysterious missing of an unfortunate lady was solved and murderer jailed. (Happened in kerala india)
It probably will. I saw a Forensic Files episode once where a skeleton was found in a wooded area. There were breast implants with it. They have serial numbers on them.
@@themanunarayanan Great detective work.
Just don't get divorced and revert to your previous name or forget to say you have married while waiting for the operation! Haha
the absolute flex to have your shows name printed out with medical equipment
I had both of my knees replaced last year and my recovery was not hard. It was like a new lease on life. Planning to get both shoulders replaced this year. Cause of problems was arthritis
Good on you, man. Hope everything works out with the shoulder replacements.
It took me 4 mos of therapy, I had to rebuild the muscles.
I’m expecting an update when it’s done. Good luck 👍🏻
I’ve had both hips and both knees replaced because of rheumatoid arthritis all before I was 25. Now they want to replace the knees and hips because they’re worn out after 40 years. They added my left shoulder to the list and I said no to that. I’m left hand and have been told I could use up to 25% mobility. I had carpel tunnel surgery a couple of months ago and if I had it to do today I’d say hell no. They didn’t tell me it could be up to 6 months before my hands are back to normal, well normal for me anyway. At least my hands won’t set off the scanners at airports. And yes I have to carry a special card with me where ever I go.
Suffering from arthritis for more than 25 years. Done tkr surgery 2 years earlier. Yes, now I living in a new life.
"My name is carved into my bones." Now that's something to brag to your friends about.
So archeologists will know your name when they find you in 500.000 years, lol.
how it's made is the best series ever...
Yes it is. Brooks Moore's voice is like velvet.

Never in my life have I ever asked myself "hmm, I wonder how knee replacements are made?"
Me neither, but I’m gonna watch it anyways.
But we’re all here for some reason hell yeah guys teamwork.🤷

Well, bless your youthful knees my friend.
I didn't either until I needed one! LOL
My partner has worked for one of the largest joint replacement manufacturers for over a decade. I can honestly tell you this rarely do this. They have size guides they can obtain from X-rays but they rarely do that either. They now have robotic assisted methods that offer exacting cuts and angles to make for a perfect fit. These doctors perform 7 or 8 straight forward surgeries a day, they know exactly what they're doing and it's completely routine. Whats crazy is the technology used today is virtually the same as when it was patented in the 60's-70's! UA-cam has great videos both live and animated of knee replacement surgery, go take a look for yourself.
Great discussion of the mfg process flow and procedure to make a surgical aid (cutting template).
Awesome example of use of computer technology and 3D printing in a medical application. Now I understand how the use of this template produces a better surgical outcome. The template allows for less-invasive surgery and a more precise outcome.
It is amazing to see just how fast and far technology has advanced, for joint replacement surgical patients. I had both of my knees replaced in 2013 (10 months apart). No MRIs for custom fitting guides; the biggest technology difference I experienced was different incision closures and dressings to keep things dry. For replacement #2, I no longer had to wrap my leg in plastic and trash bags to keep the incision dry - the special covering material meant I could take a normal shower! A good friend went through her own double knee replacements with the first before Covid, and the second delayed til it was safe again for surgical patients. I was absolutely gobsmacked at how quickly she recovered - she was safe to drive only 2 weeks post op, whereas for my procedures, I wasn’t allowed to even consider driving for almost 3 months!
I had both knees done 4 days apart and then was thrown out of rehab a day early. It helps to be lucky.
At first glance, I thought those were popcorns in the thumbnail. (By golly, I need to have my eyes checked.)
crunchy
This is absolutely brilliant!
This is a great insightful study on knee replacement equipments 😍
Concise and informative. Well done.
My mom had one of her knees replaced, the recovery is hard af. Theres videos of the surgery on YT
Oh wow is she ok now
@@SnickersEatsCookies yeah she's good, thanks
@@oliverwells8011 I’m glad she recovered!
@@oliverwells8011 oh good
Whats a link for one of the videos also is she ok?
At first glance of the thumbnail, I wasnt thinking knee replacement. I was thinking popcorn
I was, too!
"First, a worker takes a big pot. He puts in a layer of popcorn kernels with a little cooking oil. The pot is placed over a gas flame. The worker shakes the pot to keep the kernels from burning..."
how it's made binge watch. here we go!
Fantastic video. It would be interesting to see a video one installed.
I really like how they printed "How It's Made" with the implants for the show.
Very interesting. I always wondered. A family member is having extreme pain in both of his knees. He's currently getting shots but it is a short term solution that has to be repeated every 3 to 6 months. I have discomfort but I can live with it
At the end of the day, the best thing to do is consult a healthcare professional. There's a ton of different problems and an equal myriad of solutions, and at the end of the day, only someone in orthopedics can accurately tell said person what's up and what possible long term solutions could be.
Even within knee arthroplasty (knee replacement), there are many options and solutions available
Fascinating.💚💚
Very interesting. Thank you.
Great work Thank you
Yo this video was sick and I mean no kneecap dawg
This is incredible. Wowwwww

My mom got titanium knees put in when had surgery.had both knees done at same time in her 50s
What a time to be alive
That's one old school printer.
What I need right now.. 😔. My knee popping like July 4th
“Hey, is that my leg on TV?”
Awesome!!!
Very useful
My grandpa literally just got a knee replacement last week and this is in my recommended.
Its because they are always watching 🤫
Wish you'd taken it through the surgery.
Always, great videos.
Its actually pretty graphic, they have videos here
Amazing
the whole process was fascinating, but i found it surprising that the tumbler with the plastic balls was the best way to knock the powder off of the implants
What a time to be alive!
I like how all these videos look like its from the 90s
Great tech
Interesting
I Suffer from Osteoarthritis in both my Knees so I will be getting replacement knees at some point in my life.
Nice
Omg I thought it was popcorn at first!!!!
Watching this made my knees hurt.
Is it weird that my knees were tingling while watching this
3:47 90% clean plus the operator's hand sums up to 99.999%
Had a total knee replacement in May, 2021. The implant was made of stainless steel with nylon replacing the meniscus, not plastic shown in this video. And there was no MRI of my knee for its fabrication, I just got one from a set of standard size implants sized at the time of surgery. Was my surgeon using "old" technology?
I'm surprised to see these things tumbled
What the name of this plastic?
How to manage aal the legements?
My knee replacement was an experimental model installed when I was 16 after my left knee was destroyed by a drunk in a Cadillac. I'm 64 now.Made of surgical stainless steel and titanium, it has held up over the years. I keep joking that they should have put a grease plug in it. These plastic models WILL NOT HOLD UP UNDER NORMAL USAGE and my doctor recommended that I not get a newer knee joint. It would last less than 3 years as active as I am.
Artificial left knee and an artificial right leg - I seem to deserve the description of Cyborg. BTW I can't go anywhere near a MRI machine.
*I had my right knee replaced 4 months ago and my leg is 20mm too long. I had the robotic surgery and they did a CT mapping to get a precise measurement. So now I get to wear a heel lift for the rest of my life unless I either redo the surgery or get the other leg done.*
I'm sorry that happened.
Wasn't the way my titanium replacement was made.
*Me seeing the HIM logo and the thumbnail:
"Why is there a popcorn video on HIM?"
I need this implant for my mother. where can I get it? please reply. TIA.
Check Amazon.com
Interesting that they still use this old-fashioned method of 3D printing.
I had a friend who had a defective artificial knee implanted in him. It took SEVERAL more surgeries just to repair the damage done. BEWARE if you need this surgery.
4:11 me when I think I may need a knee replacement one day and that there’s no earthly way it’ll be remotely affordable as I’m witnessing the processes used to create them
Universal healthcare anyone?
knee replacement lore
What type of plastic are the knee replacements
Femoral implants are still made of steel, usually cobalt-chromium stainless. The tibial implants are steel “trays” with HDPE inserts. This video just showed the plastic surgical guides being printed. Everything shown here is thrown out after surgery.
I really want a replacement
1:15 My mind is not cooperating
man your brain is amazing
@Vortex Edge not mine I didn't identify it.
Who else thought that the thumbnail was popcorn
The thumbnail made me think they are mushrooms

They did virtual surgery on the bone modle
Who else thought the thumbnail was popcorn at first? 😅
👍👍👍👍
I have a guy. Whatever the doctor is charging he'll do it for half.AND he comes to you in his van. Let me know.
Now I know 👍
why do they bother with the tumbler instead of just like rinsing them off
The tumbler cleans off the dry powder, which can be reused. Once you add water to wash the parts, the polymer gets wasted, and it's bad for both the cost and the environment to waste so much plastic
@@sarcasticeggs8998 oh shit okay
Bice to see, I'm a canidate for my lft. knee an rt. hip, been putting it off now I feel a bit better about it.
My grandmother said that breaking her (bad) hip and having to have a replacement then did more for her pain than anything she's ever done....
People hope for a better future. Engineers make it happen.
Wait, there still making how its made!?
Why is that doc making 3d models of truck nuts?
If my cartilage goes I'll just insert a zerk fitting
Wishful thinking
My concern is, how long will the prosthesis last? Is this material better than titanium? . Important questions.
These are surgical templates for cutting into the bones, not the prosthetic itself.
@@forgenorman3025 thank you! I will watch again with better understanding. 😉🐯
I'll take two and fries with that please
So watching this video there Is lots of people walking around with a knee replacement with "how it's made" engraved on it?
ok but what about ADVANCED knee replacements.
Ma had both knees and both shoulders replaced *twice* before she passed on
Did anyone have their Doc refuse to perform the surgery until you had lost weight? Mine has, I weigh 317 lbs he wants me to reduce to 275 lbs. It is all but impossible to get any reduction, I am at wits end.
Search the actual surgery it's crazy 😬
Only ONCE!!! Measure twice cut once...
Jangan biarkan apa yang berlaku semalam menghantui hidup anda hari ini
The life expectancy of these prosthetics are 25 years. I have both TKR surgery in 2019.
That's awesome!!! They used to be only 10 years.
This company has a 50 year knee. Oxidized Zirconium coupled with cross-linked polyethylene.
“This process reduces time, materials, the amount of cuts… and costs hundreds of thousands more than previous knee surgeries”
2:40 that's a lot of microplastic
I believe the “plastic” powder used for the 3D printed parts is actually nylon.
Nylon is just one of maybe a couple dozen thermoplastic resins used in additive manufacturing,
@@osmanvincent1975 They’re using SLS 3D printers so it’s most definitely nylon. The other thermoplastics you’re referring to are used by FDM 3D printers, which work with a much wider range of materials (PLA, ABS, PP etc).
I came for the ice cream sandwich video, but I stayed for the knee replacement video
I make a thing called “femoral trials” at the place I work
Ok now show the surgery…
Next: a chip of all your data in your knee
These must be on the low end of replacement quality.......
My mom was going to get replacements on both knees with the first surgery in the end of this month. She died on Thursday instead 😭
Sorry for your loss 😔
@@Master-uy6no Thank you. She had just turned 65.
So sorry to hear that. I hope you'll find the strength to cope with her loss
Damnit . That doesn't mean the sergeon is going to be able to cut the precise angle in the precice place.
Fuck . Unless that sergeon is a robot.
Damnit.
Yes 102nd!
I could not beilieve the title... 🤣🤣😂😅
My mom needs knee replacement surgery. I might let her see this. I'm sure this is more expensive than the old way. 😩😩😩😩
You never know, could be less. If this decreases the duration and difficulty of the surgery, that could be a big reduction in cost
This sounds like it could be the Nano knee surgery. Saw a doctor for it. The MRI must be done within 30 days of surgery & is not covered by insurance - $4K for MRI. So no MRI until you commit to surgery. He did look at x-rays to determine dammage though. Recovery is minimal, one-week, opposed to tradional knee surgery that takes 6-8 weeks to recover. It doesn't last as long though - 15 years, opposed to traditional knee replacement, which lasts 20-25 years.
