  • Austin City Limits (ACL) began its journey as a television show in 1974 on KLRN, a local PBS station. Producer Bill Arhos, along with Paul Bosner and Cameron Strang, aimed to capture the raw energy of Austin’s vibrant music scene. The very first episode featured Willie Nelson, an Austin icon, whose performance was a resounding success. This launch marked the beginning of a show that would revolutionize live music broadcasting.
Over the years, Austin City Limits expanded its musical horizon. Initially focused on country and Texan music, the show quickly incorporated other genres, including blues, rock, folk, and more. This eclectic mix allowed numerous artists, both famous and emerging, to perform on the ACL stage. The musical diversity of Austin was perfectly reflected in the show, which became a springboard for artists from all backgrounds.
In 2002, inspired by the success of the television show, the Austin City Limits festival was born. Held in the beautiful Zilker Park, this event attracted thousands of spectators from its very first edition. Initially a one-weekend festival, ACL gradually expanded to two weekends, featuring performances from over 130 artists and drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world.
The diversity of artists at the ACL festival is one of the reasons for its immense popularity. From rock legends to emerging indie music talents and pop stars, all musical genres have their place. This inclusive approach has allowed the festival to capture the attention of a wide audience, while providing a launch platform for many new talents.
Despite its large scale, the ACL festival has managed to retain a strong local identity. Austin’s laid-back atmosphere is reflected in every aspect of the festival, whether through local food stalls or the creations of Austin’s artists and artisans. This fusion of local culture and international event makes ACL a unique festival.
Sustainability is also at the heart of the festival’s concerns. Initiatives such as recycling, water refill stations, and bike parking reflect ACL’s commitment to the environment. Partnerships with local organizations like the Austin Parks Foundation show how deeply the festival is rooted in the local community.
In 2014, the opening of the ACL Live concert hall at The Moody Theater gave a permanent home to the television show. This venue now hosts live recordings as well as many other concerts throughout the year. It has become an essential space for music lovers in Austin.
ACL isn’t just about the outdoor festival. The television show is now the longest-running music series in American television history. In 2010, it was even awarded the National Medal of Arts, highlighting its cultural importance.
As Austin City Limits celebrates its fifth decade, both the festival and the show continue to thrive. The musical diversity, commitment to local culture, and ecological initiatives ensure ACL a special place in the hearts of music lovers for many more years to come.
Austin City Limits embodies the creative and bold spirit of Austin. Whether through intimate performances on the television stage or large outdoor concerts at Zilker Park, ACL remains an iconic celebration of live music and Austin’s unique culture. #AustinCityLimits #ACL2024 #LiveMusicAustin #AustinFestival
