For years the Brave Wilderness audience has been asking - “Coyote will you ever get punched by a Mantis Shrimp?”
Well, the moment has finally arrived and in this episode, we will try to answer this burning question. But before we get into this entertaining experiment, first… Coyote will put himself into the position of a prey item by comparing the impact force of a hockey puck slap shot to the supposed impact of a mantis shrimp punch.
Things are about to get wild so check out this episode out to see what happens!

Hello

They are smart also. So thats way it will not work. :)
I trying out
That's going to be painful
Interesting to see that the mantis shrimp seems to be intelligent enough to notice that he doesn't really have to hunt the krill and can instead just pull it off. Didn't expect that from a shrimp of all things
its not a shrimp
@@willg1944 and it's not a mantis
Lol
Its not intelligent
Sometimes certain animals can be smarter than what we give them credit for. We just don't always see it.
I love how the shrimp is too smart to even bother wasting a punch.
Good life lesson there.

Coyote tryin to get the mantis shrimp to punch his finger but inadvertently gaining its trust instead was hilarious.
I like how you didn’t force him to hit you by being too aggressive. Shows you really do respect the animal.
Yeah I was waiting to see if he'd mess with it. Glad he didn't. Little guy is super chill and I love that they're intelligent enough to know he wasn't gonna do anything, so why go after him?
You gotta scare that shrimp 🦐
Having a locked up animal used for content is not what i called respect towards an animal
It’s a good thing too. I’m not sure he realizes that if he got a full on punch on his fingertip, both of his nails would be cracked and partially removed from his fingers
hey i live in columbus ohio
Mantis Shrimp just really showed it’s smarts by being able to identify that Coyote wasn’t a threat as well as just yanking the krill off instead of punching it out because he realized it’s already dead. Love these little critters and was introduced to them years ago because of the Oatmeal comics (creators of exploding kittens and other games)
my family love exploding kittens hahah
I was introduced to the Mantis shrimp from Z Frank and his series "True facts" about the Mantis Shrimp. Worth the watch. It's really funny and informative.
exploding kittens is goated
yeah they are pretty damn intelligent!
Smart creature. Very intelligent actually. Able to tell the difference between friend, prey, and predator. Even went as far as to give Coyote a fist bump! 😂
It's only friend is goby fish, it's predators are few, and it's preys are most

It was adorable how he didn't want to bite the proverbial hand that feeds him and instead was curious and inquisitive about it. Then he backed away all shy and scared because he didn't know what to make of you. What an intelligent-looking little creature.
People often underestimate the intelligence of animals, but I find this hilarious. Mantis Shrimp is just like, "Uhhh...what are you doing? Ohey you brought me food. Thanks!"
I think if he was a little more aggressive that shrimp would've gave him exactly what he was looking for
Yeah, i think if coyote agitated them just a bit by pushing some sand or moving a bit faster with his fingers, he would have been smashed
Definetlye
Bothering a animal that doesn't want to attack until it gets pissed off just for a video like this is totally unnecessary, so i guess that's why coyote choose to not agitated the shrimp.
@@Feuervix if u compare it to other vids he had bugs agitated in tweezers n other situations where he agitated animals n such
@@omega9492 maybe coyote had no desire to get punched. Maybe he even knew getting punched by a mantis shrimp is not the best of ideas .
Shrimp: Ahh one of the giant god creatures that give me food constantly *gives fist bump*
I love how the Shrimp basically says "No, Coyote. You don't want catching these hands."
ALSO! I feel like we didn’t address the fact that mantis shrimp look beautiful but in reality have MORE colours than the human eye can perceive which I always thought was neat
He also said ohio
I think you mean they can see more than we can, he's effectively able to see most of the spectrum. They have 12 different kinds of photo receptors, unlike ours which only have 3. They're so intelligent and absolutely beautiful creatures. I'm thinking about getting one when I get my own place and giving the little guy a big tank to have a nice chill life. The one thing I've seen with people that own mantis shrimp, is that they often live in fairly small tanks for their size. I wouldn't want to overwhelm em with such a tiny living space.
Speak for yourself, I perceived all the colors.
The human eyes can still perceive small differences in particular wavelengths of color. Like we can perceive different colors of green.
It's actually believed that that may have been incorrect now, and instead it's actually just that they have a difference in their cones with how they process color, but they don't actually perceive more colors. They are beautiful though!
Man, Coyote is such a great goalie. He wouldn’t let any shot get in 😂😂😂
Still stopped more shots than Columbus could all season.
@@PhoenixLaw92 haha
Hire him instead of Merzlikins
I love how it paddles with their little feet in the water, they're actually pretty damn quick like that, at first glance it looks like a lobster until you see its dazzling array of colors, it looks very intrigued in its surrounding and is smart enough to know that you're not a threat, its able to gauge threat levels much more efficiently and no just rely on impulse and thats probably due to its stellar eye sight, apparently ... Humans can only process three channels of colour (red, green and blue), while mantis shrimps perceive 12 channels of colour, and can detect UV (ultra violet) and polarised light so imagine a color you can't even imagine and multiply that by 9, makes me think of someone on acid just running around in a clown costume in the middle of the ocean lol ... its really an incredible species and best of all is you can actually keep them as pets, if i could re incarnate into any animal on the planet in my later life, i'd probably choose to be the mantis shrimp...
i think out of all the things, this one could've had the worst consequences, because if they're strong enough to break aquarium glass it would've probably broken your fingers or ripped your nails off, depending on the location hit
They definitely can break a human finger with a well placed swing. Powerful little guys.
There's videos of fishermen getting hit on their boot enough to draw blood.
The video is easy to find mr Markus
@@laughs150 Yeah I saw that one. I'm guessing in that clip, it hit him with the spike instead of the full knuckle punch.
He is a “domesticated” Mantis Shrimp and is intelligent enough to know not to smash human hands that feed him so you did prove they are intelligent and do not just indiscriminately attack.
9:39
I legit thought “awwe” when that shrimp decided to take the food without hitting or stabbing Coyote 😂❤
This is the friendliest Mantis Shrimp I've ever seen. 😭
i like how graceful and cute it is how it does the little spins and somesaults when i moves around. almost like it's showing off.
also, seems like it's smarter than he gave it credit for. it realized that it didn't "need" to strike, so it didn't strike.
"acceleration rate of 50 miles per hour"
the science nerd within me: **screams with agony**
Lol I thought the same thing. That's not acceleration hahaha.
Thank you for being the first one I found
Me someone who knows anything about guns 22 Calibers shoot at 800 MPH on average not 50 wtf
I was so confused by that part. An acceleration rate of 50 mph? Something about a bullet going 50 mph which it definitely doesn't? None of that made sense to me lol.
Goes to show the Mantis Shrimp is very intelligent. It probably knew Coyote isn't a eel nor felt a sense of danger. Also knew the krill was already dead so why bother punching it lol
I love this channel. I've learned so much over the years to the point I'd like to donate to the various organizations you all have introduced me to. Keep up the great work!!
So much speculation kekw
It was so scared it tried to burrow itself away. Coyote is a monster to it
It's incredible how a mantis shrimp can punch faster that a blink of an eye
standard velocity for a 22lr (the most common cartage with a 22 Cal bullet other than 223rem/556nato) is anywhere between 600fps(409mph) to 1300fps(886mph) depending on a lot of factors your an entire order of magnitude off.
Just started watching this and the 50mph caught me too...i thought to myself who do they have doing math calculations LOL. Even a 68cal paintball gun fires a ball near 200mph. Simple calc on a 40gr .22lr gave me 852mph
I get that oopsies happen. But you need to be extra unobservant to not catch it. And having several people working on the video makes it even more baffling :
The average human can kick at 50mph, and punch at about 20mph. Trained athletes can double the numbers.
A 22 caliber bullet is faster than 50 mph when it leaves the gun
Yeah but only like 10 times faster. 😂
This animal has pretty much everything! it can perceive 12 different channels of color while we can only perceive 3. It can detect Ultra Violet and polarized light, things that are invisible to us. And it has the strongest punch in the animal kingdom! whoever made this shrimp basically said "why not?" and went all out on it. What a lucky animal
it actually has 16 different color cones not 12
God is that whoever you mention.
Evolution is surely amazing
@@CapnWack hey dipshit, maybe it wasn't your God that made it. Mightve been a Hindu God, posiden. Or one of the numerous other gods and deities. Or it just evolved naturally

(This is Ohio NHL team we aren't really known for hockey but we're still learning)
Incredible how greatly evolved this creature is. It's like the swiss army knife of the sea
The shrimp is very cute and its investigation of yourself was truly mind boggling, especially seeing its incredible eyes and sensor organs in action.

The real video starts at 6:00 😂
Yeah thanks for that. Hate to call Coyote a sell out, but kinda hard not to fit that label when a third of the video is an ad and the actual content kinda sucked
What a beautiful creature! I'm glad you didn't try to stress it too badly just for the video and respected it. Loved seeing the curiosity and intellect of such a small sea animal, but I guess as a niche predator it's probably smarter than your average fish.
Man, mantis shrimps are such a beauty. That's the look of a winner in evolution if you'll ask me.
That shrimp was like oh hey thanks for the snack. Least aggressive little dude ever lol
This actually showed the intelligence and even tenderness that can be expressed by a crustacean.
I think it amazing how intelligent these guys are I've seen a lot at fish stores and they are totally friendly I'm not saying all of them are but the 3 I met were pretty chill and very curious u could hand feed it which I thought was awesome
Kinda not salty about the hype having no payoff... because that animal is just so much fun to watch moving around. The colours are amazing and seeing it problem-solving is really interesting.
I like how the mantis shrimp knows when to pull its punches. Impressive!
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
- Tries to get dangerous shrimp to attack him
- Accidentally becomes its friend
Coyote is TOO good with animals
"How nice, brought me already punched food!"
There's two versions of Mantis shrimp. One of them has the hammers. The other has the harpoons. Fun fact, during World War II, ships kept hearing snapping in the sonar headphones. The cause of the snapping noises were these shrimps beating on crabs.
I'm sure everyone seen the video of a fisherman catching a mantis shrimp. It fell into his boat and punched his shoe. Ripped a hole in the shoe and dudes foot was bleeding. I'd say coyote is lucky.
I like how coyote made the mascot feel proud even though his shot is slower than the original players
Coyote, if you want to get hit by the mantis shrimp you should hit it first and then it will fight back thinking it can be eaten.
she's so clever, she senses it's food and soft : she just goes for the claws and grab the fuud
She? Its a he
Fud has a whole different meaning in Scotland, I was rather confused 😂😂
@@Anything_Can_Be_True its also an animal, it doesn't care about pronouns
I wonder what part of evolution just said "let's just punch REALLY hard"
Man went "gee thanks, i was feeling peckish"
Such a beautiful animal 😍 i appreciate how you didn't resort to bullying it in order to elicit a response.
I was honestly scared that mantis shrimp was gonna break his nail in half
50mph is not the same as a .22 caliber bullet. .22 bullets have a muzzle velocity of about 11 to 1200 feet per second which is about 800 miles per hour. Not 50. Note that there are sub-sonic rounds that travel slower... but not that slow.
I think he was talking acceleration of the bullet, but its still around 175+ mph so more than 3x that of a mantis shrimp punch
And that is with an average 16inch barrel btw feel free to check my math
I can throw a bullet 50mph, so it is pretty nuts that no one on his production team caught that. Unbelievable, actually. I sometimes wonder if errors that egregious are intentional to get more ppl commenting and hence more monetization.
That mantis shrimp was so gentle with him 😂
Man, nature gave that shrimp the ability to attract, fight and outsmart anything that comes in its way
I'm so glad coyote is back. I miss his videos.
Having a mantis shrimp aquarium (appropriate size so they have a great life) would be incredibly, definitely among the most fascinating living beings on this planet, just remarkable.
Was just watching videos on how much koalas suck then come across this & find out how amazing it is
we need a rematch maybe a wild one or one that lives in captivity that’s more aggressive will punch
Imagine being a crab and the shrimp out here just throwing hands in the ocean
That’s a very well mannered Mantis Shrimp
Dont under estimate the mantis shrimp, not only they are pretty but they are smart too.😋
I love that little flip the mantis shrimp does.
Mantis Shrimp woke up and chose peace.
Theres a vid online of a mantis shrimp punching through the wet shoe of a fisherman in a boat, it busted his foot open. It would have nearly broken your finger if it would have defensively hit you dude. Glad you didnt get wacked
I can't believe you put your two little fingers in harm's way just to show that he won't punch them into stardust.
I love how Coyote was expecting a fight, but to this shrimp he just got to hang out with a weird hand that had food on it
The sound when the mantis shrimp punches the crab is crazy. Sounds like balls on a pool table hitting eachother.
It honestly might not be edited. I vaguely remember seeing a video where it isn’t edited and you can literally hear a similar noise whenever the shrimp punches a crab. It’s literally that powerful.
@Not_Ciel who tf said it was and why tf would it be lmao
A 22 caliber bullet leaves the barrel of a gun at over 600 mph.
Didnt realize that the shrimp is mad chill like that
Mantis shrimp are incredibly intelligent. You can see him working it all out.
That probe lens is awesome. Love how close you were able to get
I’ve always loved this animal. From its different species, the spear one etc, to the eye sight which he forgot to mention is the most advanced in the animal kingdom, to the colors.
Also it got a lot of arms/legs of different utility like sensing, grabbing, punching, swimming etc.
No, he didn't "forget" it's actually mentioned that they have incredible eyesight
He literally mentioned the eye sight being exceptional tard
@@cristianm.5689 Well, it’s quite more than that. We humans have 3 color cones, while the mantis shrimp has over 10. It’s not just that their eyesight is impressive, they are able to see thousands of more colors than we could even imagine!
@@user-fs1lc2cj5s i read recently that this actually isn't the case
Human eyes have 3 color detecting cones that our brains can use to blend together to see the spectrum of color that we can see
The mantis shrimp has many many more cones than we do, but their brains don't use them together like we do, each cone is used by itself
Explaining it is weird, so I'll go with an example. We have a blue cone and a red cone, our brains can use them together to see shades of purple. The Mantis shrimp would need a purple cone, because they can't use their red and blue cones in conjunction the same way we do
“i feel like you should just punch me” NO hesitation
Very intelligent creatures.
And Coyotes got off easy in this episode.😂
The mantis shrimp is lethal enough to a human. Punching can result of broken bones and deep laceration. Imagine being hit by a .22mm bullet
I mean I feel baited It didn't even punch him
Mantis shrimp was like man he putting his stinky hand back in here again…wait he got some food for me thanks pal
Imagine how deadly a human sized mantis shrimp would be. It would be able to punch a hole straight through you in an instant.
Seeing a coyote born in arizona flopping about on the ice is hilarious!
Although, those punches they use probably use up a lot of energy. I’d imagine they avoid using them unless they have to
Glad to see that you are still alive and having crazy fun!!!
"how nice of him, offering me food"
He's a good boi and knows not to punch the hand that feeds him.
I’ve never seen someone so mad that they didn’t get punched, especially by a mantis shrimp 🤨😆😆
It's been so many years how is this man still alive with those venomous and dangerous experience this man is superhuman wtf 💀💀💀💀
Every time I watch coyote; stung, stung, stung, bitten, poisoned, or punched , and in the background. Mark saying are you ok coyote lol
Unlucky, Coyote accidentally got the most polite mantis shrimp.
LOVE this video, all your guys videos are AMAZING but the last few you have made are amazing
When Coyote is too scared to disturb a Mantis Shrimp. 😂
love how it's just sitting there like a little sensei
Shrimp knows that you do not punch the feeding hand.
That shrimp got hands
Knowing these shrimp can break thick glass with their punches, I am glad Coyote didn't end up losing a finger tip to this very intelligent and adorable cutie!
If there is a rematch and he does get punched... God speed, Coyote.
How depressing. Was so excited to finally see this. Please revisit with a wild one!
That mascot did not hesitate 🤣
The shrimp is a marvelous specimen to say the least. Not was I was expecting it's first or second response to Coyote's fingers. Would love to own a peacock mantis shrimp someday.
Maybe if Coyote put a small snail or clam between his fingers and not allowing it to pull it from his grip, maybe the shrimp will do a predatory punch.
I like how he didn't even give credit to Massimosaquatics, for the B-roll footage of the crabs being demolished
Imagine being a crab and through evolution you pump up defense stat by hardening your body all through out centuries just to meet a mantis shrimp that pump up strength stat to penetrate your defense
Watching its eyes open and close like that made me have an absolutely visceral reaction
I was glad to see that after the shrimp realized you weren't a threat and left you alone, you guys didn't purposely try to aggravate or make it feel threatened in a way that it'd want to attack all other fingers that it sees. (Not that you should stick them near it anyways)
That game looks really fun! The Mantis Shrimp is so beautiful, it is really smart. This sea creature is amazing! Happy Holidays to you and the crew.
I so wished I could have one of these guys as an aquarium pet. They're so impressive n smart in so many ways. And just look at their vibrant colors! They'd be awesome just so long as you give them the respect they deserve.
Shrimp seems pretty chill imo
