Kaamel Mathis I forgot they won it in 2015 thanks for reminding me! Also he has won I&E several times and is the one of the youngest people ever to make the BD snare line.
LAST year with BD?! Wow time flies! I remember watching a video with Brandon as a kid with BD drummers and keeping right up. I think he was born with drum sticks in his hands! Best wishes to a long bright future!
Cassandra Garcia yeah, and they all have great chops but who’s perspective is the video from? exactly. the fact that 8 other people play the same music doesn’t make his talent any less impressive
Hey Joseph, not sure if you’re joking, but he actually only has 6 spare sticks. I don’t think he could fit 500 sticks in that size stick bag even if he tried really hard. Funny comment, though. I had a good laugh. 😊
My marching band days were in the 70’s. I just discovered Brandon and I’m watching all the videos I can find of him. My Dad was a high school band director and a drummer. I wish he could see this young man. Watching this video had me huffing and puffing in a minute. Everyone was soaked at the end, which triggered my twisted brain.....I wonder who foots the bill for the dry-cleaning of uniforms. That could get stinky. 🥴 (sorry, couldn’t help it) Hey Brandon, I wish you all the best. I joined your story late, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. 🏆🏆🏆
Something I noticed is how consistent he is. One is looking at wear on his snare head one quarter size spots for both sticks. Also the area where the paint wears off when he plays shots are ridiculous.
Man -- what a solid run. I've been watching Brandon for such a long time and as someone who is well beyond aged out and never got a single opportunity to be on a drumline due to extenuating circumstances, I lived vicariously through this prodigy for a decade and loved every bit of it. To this day, I take time away from my day job and noodle on a pad with some SRCs and learn a little of certain books. The ONLY thing that taints my love for this video is that comment at the beginning where ScoJo mentions that they're expected to win in Semis and widen the 1st place gap on finals night. I've watched many of these Funliner Productions videos and have zero bad blood with any of the BD members, but there have been a few key moments in the channel (ex: Here and in the SCV 2018 commentary) where BD alumni continually mention winning and how important it is to them. Yes, I get that everyone wants to win. I just think BD needs to be a little more selective in their language around scores/winning and focus on the message of pursuing musical excellence, because let's face it -- BD is a great program and deserves 19 World Championships. But many of us would like to see another Corps get the spotlight every now and then (Yes, I know Cadets, Crown, Bloo, and SCV have taken titles in recent years -- don't come after me). Some fans of DCI purposely hope for BD to lose BECAUSE they win so much. I, admittedly, was one of them in 2018. But hearing this and remembering that night that Bloo -- ahead for most of the tour -- conveniently stays stagnant in their scores on Semis and BD surges in their score, taking over 1st. If someone who was there in Indy can give me concrete confirmation that Bluecoats legitimately dropped the ball in semis, then that's good enough for me. I purchased both shows and watch them often. Either ScoJo is a wizard (beyond percussion) or there is a perpetuated favoritism here for the team with the most resources and a brand that extends into hardware sales (System Blue), etc. to take the full BD program full circle. Again -- not bashing the video, Brandon Olander, BD as a whole or their respective members/staff, but small comments like this seeping through the cracks are what people remember and damage their perception of an otherwise phenomenal organization/legacy. Brandon, you're seriously something special. Thank you for the gifts you brought to the music community -- from overcoming health conditions to perform at a professional athletic level to showing up fully-matured DCI snare players at a fraction of the age, continually pushing the envelope of rudimental snare percussion.
It's still crazy to think that he has actually aged out. I remember hearing about Brandon back in 2014 on that news segment he did. He's inspired me in ways I could never imagine. Thank you Brandon for inspiring me to be more confident in myself as a player. Hopefully I'll be out there by next season.
I do believe when they played that in metamorph is was from 2012. If i remember correctly, the movement's bpm in 2012 was like 230 or something high. Which they played really well and it was a remembered part and it made it's way into metamorph.
Just curious, where do you hear a lack of snare response? They might not be quite as wet as 2018 but they're close, at least to my ear with this recording
also keep in mind that the gopro also has compression on the audio. with that being said the gain and the EQ are adjusted so its a a line level (0 DB) in the recording at all times. from a sound engineer perspective the sound was perfectly fine and hasnt changed much. its the equipment used to record it.
Sub Bot that’s kinda what I meant sorry lol. With system blue drums being super dry and “metallicy” as it is I like a nice juicy snare response to compensate for the lack of juice. I mean it’s sounds good for system blue but I just prefer last years sounds a lot more.
interesting that his right stick playing position is dead-center on the head, with his left slightly off-center. NOT a criticism, just interesting (I'm a mostly-former quad player, I know jack about snare playing positions)
That's pretty highly discouraged, but it's not at all difficult to accidentally let your left hand slide into that position. With traditional grip your left shoulder is often a lot more relaxed, and when you're focusing on drill it's easy to let it slip.
@@FinnPayton I though both hands were supposed to be slightly off center so it would be louder or something. I, like the other, know nothing about this stuff because I'm a freshman and in high school I didn't try as hard as I should have.
@@conanrose1182 That's true when you're playing on snare drums with more resonance. Since expensive marching snares nowadays have little to no resonance to their sound, it's kind of redundant to play in the tonal zones. Most drum techs prefer the uniform look of playing in the center of the head.
Our high school has the drums from Felliniesque and they're absolutely gorgeous 😍 we still have the gold on them and they're so freaking stunning to look at and play. We put gray pearl suede max heads on them and now they sound so much better. I'll send you a picture of them if you want lol
