The one and only HEMINGWAY daiquiri

  • Today’s drink is the Hemingway Daiquiri! Recipes for this drink have evolved since Hemingway’s original Papa Doble (a sugarless daiquiri with a double shot of rum). The result is a crowd-pleasing balance of sweet and tart - who doesn’t love a good daiquiri riff? Hope you enjoy this rendition of a warm weather favorite. Cheers!

More Hemingway history: He would mix up a daiquiri at home before driving into Havana at the Floridita. He made it large enough so he wouldn't run out until he got inside the bar.

Great writer, absolute garbage human being. Not 100% his fault though as he had suffered from psychosis as early as the late 40's due to family history and several traumatic brain injuries. So I kinda give him a pass. Poor bastard, even his demons had demons.

Can’t believe I’ve never had a Hemingway Daiquiri despite loving rum, spending some summers in Key West (visiting the Hemingway house of course), and almost always having the ingredients! I’ll have to make one soon. Also, Jeff Berry’s “Potions of the Caribbean” has tons of great information on La Floridita, Constantine Ribalaigua Vert (it’s legendary bartender), Hemingway, and the various daiquiri versions served there. Excellent read for those who want to dive deep into Caribbean cocktail culture.

One of my favorite Hemingway cocktails is the Green Isaac's Special, which features in his posthumously published book Islands in the Stream. It's a great, refreshing, non-carbonated summer highball:
    • 2 oz Gin
    • 1 oz Lime Juice
    • 4 oz Coconut Water
    • 5-10 dashes Angostura Bitters (enough to turn it a rusty rose color)

It‘s a pity that there are just thumbs and no hearts to click on. You guys are such heartwarming sweeties and it‘s great fun to watch the vids! Thanks for doing this 😃

One of my all time favorites! I'm doing it with a little bit more Rum (2oz), less sugar (1/4) and more grapefruite juice (1/2) - I'll try your ratios next time and I'm very curiouse about shaking the peel!
    Cheers!

I'm like Hemingway in that I don't like sugary drinks. But this looks delicious. I'll be trying this. Keep the great cocktails coming!

let me start of by saying: I absolutely love this cocktail. was out of grapefruit today so I tried adding half an ounce of cointreau instead, was sweeter but also lovely

Classic gin martini w orange bitters and a little luxardo. Also read for whom the bell tolls.

My preferred build is a lot more aligned with Hemingway's original specs. 0.25 oz Luxardo, 0.25 oz grapefruit, 0.75 oz lime, and 2 full oz of JM White agricole, at 55% abv. I like to serve it in an old fashioned glass on one big rock.

I was wondering if you could do a video explaining the four different kind of gin?

I live in NJ, the worst state in the USA. I went into a bar today and asked for a Negroni. The bartender said, "I dont think we have that." Then I am pretty sure they just have me a glass of campari, gin and ice.

I'm a bit late on this but I cheat with a few dashes of grapefruit bitters instead of using up a grapefruit for 1 or 2 drinks.

Good spec Anders, I usually prefer mine with a little more grapefruit juice, but the peel is a great addition.
