The verse first tells us "righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard (honor, body.. etc). AND if woman are doing "nushooz" which mean "not honorable" for example the woman is disobedient and not loyal and even flirting with other men. In this Case God tells us a step by step guide what to do.. 1. dont hit her or divorce her but JUST give her advice! . 2. dont hit her or divorce her if she didn't listen to advice but dont share the bed with her. 3. If she still doesnt guard her body and is defiantly disobedient, than STILL dont divorce her but you can hit her. The verse first tells us "righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard (honor, body.. etc). AND if woman are doing "nushooz" which mean "not honorable" for example the woman is disobedient and not loyal and even flirting with other men. In this Case God tells us a step by step guide what to do.. 1. dont hit her or divorce her but JUST give her advice! . 2. dont hit her or divorce her if she didn't listen to advice but dont share the bed with her. 3. If she still doesnt guard her body and is defiantly disobedient, than STILL dont divorce her but you can hit her. And in the authentic hadith of our prophet pbuh, he explained the verse to mean hit without leaving a mark and this is to show that hitting a woman is better than divorcing her if she is this terrible.
