    Ive been battling these for years. We have had a drought which has made it challenging to keep humidity high and they have decimated our veggies and ornamentals. This is one of the only genuinely helpful videos out there! They always seem to come back but controlling a small population is so much easier. For those wondering, don't bother with the homemade vinegar or chilli sprays, they did nothing for me other than strip the natural oils from the plants making them more vulnerable.

    I find that if you are going to invest your time spraying things like the underside of the leaf, you might as well just use soapy water and a sponge. Takes care of the majority of the mites especially those under the webbings.
    You can even customize the size of the sponges by cutting them up or use a very soft bristle toothbrush.
    Plus there is zero risk of the mites developing resistance as you are killing them via physical action instead.
    This is awesome for the start of the infestation and should prevent most infestations from getting out of control. You obviously need to regularly scout by looking closely at your crops at least weekly, which you should be doing anyway. Thankfully spider mites are so easy to spot.

    Something that worked for me (at least on a lemon tree) - I set it outside. My hypothesis was that the army mites in nature would rally, and save my little tree. So I put it outside. And it worked. Brought the tree inside for winter, and it did fine. No sign of spider mites.

    After having a massive outbreak in my house, just found out these suckers also survive in aquatic surface plants. Yep. Had to take all the plants off my sunroom, only to find out that they still managed to call dibs on a tiny aquarium with some surface plants (they managed to create small webs between the water surface and the aquarium walls. Tiny nasty little creatures.

      Hi it is much better to try to find local bugs... If you can find a place in your area that sells bugs. This is better.
      Ordering bugs from a random place, this can destroy the bugs that are indigenous to your area.
      I mean you can buy ladybugs online and they can go escape and make sick the ladybugs that are already living in your area. So before buying cheap bugs random online, search locally. please.

    bayer 3 in 1 is probably the best thing on the market for mites. It's an actual true mitecide. From what I've read pyretherium or however you spell it isn't even completely effective mites are extremely resistant to even pesticides. I know bayer 3 in 1 is the best at least it was a few years ago maybe something better is out now because in the salt water reef hobby we have a very annoying pest that is a salt water mite that resists all coral chemical dips. Bayer 3 in 1 is what is used to dip corals to truly kill off all pests. Bayer 3 in 1 completely solves the issue in one spray but it is a chemical. I also use it for my house plants. Every 6 months I spray everything outside and after an hour I rinse off my houseplants to get rid of any residue since it should have killed everything by then and also soaked into the plants good enough as a systemic. Thought I should share since mites really are a nightmare to get rid of. I wish there was something I could just spray my plants inside and not have to wash off and was natural safe effective but have never heard of such a thing. There are plants that react badly to neem oil.

    It seems odd to me that you didn't mention abamectin. It seems odd because the only place I could obtain it was from a rose grower in the USA. It's a natural product, made from fermented fungus, and is harmless to humans. It's actually used internally in medicine. The bottle I had contained 8 ounces, and yes it was expensive. The best things usually are. My bottle lasted over 10 years and was still effective (even though I eventually upped the dose to 4X). Plants are not affected by it as they are by soaps and oils. With all the problems with mites so many growers have, it puzzles me that the BEST solution is the one nobody mentions. I want the cure, not the treatment ;) The brand name is Avid. A bottle can be shared to reduce expense. Single application can be effective, because it has residual translaminar properties.
    EDIT: It does have some toxicity for a very small percentage of humans, and dogs are sensitive to it. It's something that is rarely used, so exposure to it is likely to be very minimal.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 роки тому +4

      I'm familiar with Avid from my day job in horticulture. Toxicity is a concern for me (see the label: www.syngenta.ca/pdf/Labels/AVID_1.9_EC_24485_en_pamphlet.pdf ) There's also an issue of pesticide resistance, which is hastened if you don't rotate with other chemicals from a different class.

    Thank you for this comprehensive video. I really appreciate it. I would like to order plants for next year, but spider mites, grubs, crickets, grasshoppers, and aphids together have killed so many things in the last two years. I had to reseed the lawn, and replace several plants. I still haven't replaced several more, and more plants are dying. I feel like this coming year, I should just focus on biological controls. Do you think a year will be enough to get the situation under control?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 роки тому +2

      I like your focus on biological controls, but let me suggest that it's not an either/or situation. Establishing some specific families and genera of plants will help support your efforts with predators and parasitoids. Think early blooming perennials and annuals from the mustard family (aubrieta, iberis, alyssum, lobularia) to get your predators a head-start, or small flowered members of the carrot family (ammi, fennel, astrantia, eryngium) to support hoverflies and others. One year may help a lot, but I don't think there's an actual finish line. More biodiversity will generally reduce outbreaks, but some pests may still "break through"

      @@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thank you so much. I will look to seed my yard with them, and a few other natives that I just happen to like. Some take a couple of years to germinate anyway, so that will give me time. So it's a good idea not to plant bulbs or other perennial ornamentals until this major outbreak is controlled? I was planning to put lawn bulbs in at some point. Will the grubs kill them even as I put controls in place?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 роки тому +1

      That's a tough one. I'm an impatient guy, so I'd probably err on the side of trialing plants & bulbs at the same time as addressing the grubs. I've never fought a severe infestation of grubs in my lawn or garden, but I've heard that the BT solutions (depending on the type of grub) or Heterorhabditis nematodes can be pretty effective. Do you have a solid ID on the grubs themselves?

    • @melissamybubbles6139

    I made a solution of cinnamon powder, water, and distilled vinegar
    I sprayed this heavily and now most of the leaves are very healthy looking but some areas of a small number of leaves look like it's dying
    Is this related to the spider mites? Or is it a symptom of downly mildew? Could my plants be infected in both mildew and spider mites? I see no white residue

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ahmet. Yes, your plants can have both problems at the same time, or it could be a phytotoxic reaction to the vinegar spray (depending on concentration)

    • @91hamod

      I read that vinegar can destroy the waxy layer on leaves and dry them out of moisture... I want an easy solution as my spidermite problem is very small at the moment and I don't wanna go full on pyrethrin or any other chemical solution

    My Moringa leaves are starting to get speckled and yellowing and after looking with my mini microscope, I do see webs, round globules and some yellow bugs that look like the spider mites. I spayed Neem oil spray. The problem I see is that it's hard to spray neem oil on the underside of the leaves. Right now the plants are in ground and are 4-10 inches so any other suggestion to apply on the underside? Thanks. Suscribed.

      Yikes. Those spruce mites can be pretty serious. I don't like to go immediately to chemical control, but this type of mite can be life threatening to cypress. If you tackle them with pesticide this season, maybe follow up over winter with an application of horticultural oil to wipe out the overwintering mites.

    How can you tell apart the webbings of spider mites and from regular spiders?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  5 років тому +8

      By eye the webbing of spider mites is quite fine and very tight to the surfaces of the plant. You can usually see some "schmutz" (mites, their eggs, their cast skins) in the webbing, so it's usually a bit dirty looking. Search google images for "spider mite webbing" for some examples.

    Hi Jason, I have some baby roses in pot which have rooted 3 months ago. They have spider mites. The leaves are turning dry and some look burnt at the edges. I sprayed neem oil and liquid dish soap( Dawn) diluted with water on and under the leaves. I didn’t have the Insecticidal soap on hand. Will this be harmful to the leaves? They look very dry. I bought the Bonide Insecticidal soap now. What should I do so that the leaves look healthy again and new leaves grow. I also bought a small bottle of Superthrive. Should I spray that on the leaves? Please advice.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  Рік тому

      The spider mites can sure make the leaves look unhappy in a hurry. You may see a reaction from the dish soap (or even the neem) - and you'll probably need to let the plant grow on a bit for the fresh leaves before it looks much better. Superthrive is no problem used as directed, but don't expect burned or damaged leaves to recover, really. It'll be the new growth where you'll see the improvement.

    I’m am organic farmer and can’t seem to find any videos showing something I can do commercially. Been trying insects but it’s hard to get enough to work and the beneficials don’t reproduce as quick as the mites. Oil and surfactants work but coverage is nearly impossible. 😩

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 роки тому

      Hmmm. I think some organic associations approve spinosad, and it can be effective on mites. A tough thing about spider mites is that no single spray is a magic bullet over a long period. Even if it works for a time, without rotation they can develop resistance. Sulfur is another option, but it will kill beneficial mites too (and I'm not sure you'd be okay with the residue on your crops)

    • @SetTheCurve
      @SetTheCurve 2 роки тому

      @@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks for the tips. I’ve actually noticed the best results so far from opening the walls on what were screened greenhouses. my guess is that the mites have more competition. I’m considering adding banker plants for beneficials but still trying things out.
      I’m not allowed to use Spinosad because of extracts that are made from flowers I grow, and I can’t spray knockdowns on flowers because it would contaminate them. I spray oils or sulfur early on along with bt, and that seems to cover me until the plants are large enough that some foliage is hard to reach, then pockets of pests develop. When I have to quit spraying the mites explode.
      I’m lucky in that a nearby university group of entomologists are using my farm to study the effects of beneficial insects so hopefully we work something out.

    Is it necessary to repot an indoor plant to get rid of spider mites? Is there any kind of household soap that isn't harsh on the plant? I tried the dish soap thing before I watched your video and I don't think my parlor palm liked it, sadly. Is something like dial soap okay or no?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Little Fawn - dish soap and most household soaps are either detergents or sodium based, making them a little harsher on the plant tissues. Insecticidal soap is potassium based. I think there are a few household soaps that are similar (like Castile soap) but they're not as easy to come by, and not inexpensive themselves. Short answer: I think the dial soap may also damage your leaves.
