Love this ! Just realized last night half of my babies are infested but this made me feel a lot better about being able to get rid of them !! Also dying to know what kind of plant that is that you modeled it with, it’s GORGEOUS !!
Thank you for this video on how to get rid of spider mites! As for the spray bottles, I've been through quite a few and I've learned that they do not do well with added substances like soap or non-dissolvable spices like cinnamon when using basic spray bottles from a Walmart or Dollar Tree because they are so cheaply made. For remedies like this, you'd need a pretty decent pesticide type of spray bottle that's more heavy-duty. These are likely on Amazon, but a hardware store with a gardening section should have them as well.
Thank you, this was so informative. I like how you transitioned from step to step with titles. You spoke very clearly and with a conversational tone. Your plants are beautiful and complement your home.
This is a fabulous video. The only thing that gets frustrating is I feel like no one ever shows the process on more complicated plants with many leaves or smaller, danty leaves. 😬❤️ Thanks for the video!!
I use isopropyl 70% and a cotton ball . I get mealy bugs and thrips . I spray insecticide one week and go over it with the alcohol. . I use ivory soap instead of detergent because it can kill delicate leaves
You are my new best friend on UA-cam! I just discovered your vlogs and I’m renewed! Thank you for every tip and tid bit of information regarding the plant world.
Thank you for this video. I have found that many plants, especially velvety leaves like certain antherium, will not survive the degreaser in dish soap so I use castile (peppermint and tea tree oil) soap instead. I also use distilled or rain water because I live in a hard water city.
Glad for the tip about rinsing new dirt with boiling water. I repotted and had bugs anyway. Now I know what to do. Thanks! Neem oil works on my outdoor plants (canna & ginger esp.)
I like the Pasteurized soil. I'm curious if she's ever been a mycology hobbyist (fungi). Similar techniques are used to clean substrates for mushroom fruiting. An ideal temperature is 140 degrees held for minimum 30 minutes to destroy pathogens and pests while leaving beneficial bacteria intact. I used a "Pot-In-Pot" method, putting soil inside a pot and lowering it a few inches into a larger pot of water that was heating VERY SLOWLY. Latent heat is difficult to predict, so slow heating is necessary not to exceed 170 degrees F... which is TOO HOT. Once peak temperature is reached, remove the heat source and allow the pots to cool naturally overnight.
Clicked on this video because I was nervous my Schefflera has spider mites, excited that you gave an example on a schefflera. This video was so informative. Thank you!
I knew I would need this video as I recently started to buy house plants. @@medomathkour9665 I've not seen any spider mites yet. I read it online from a pro. I steamed my new plant soil when I transplanted upon purchase of all plants.
Thanks for your advice, from another NC plant lover. Fortunately I have never found spider mites or other plant insects in many years with house plants.
I use half water half milk. I spray leaves and soil about once a month. Haven’t had a problem since. Seems to nourish plant leaves too. Leaves on my Hoyas look amazing since I started doing this.
I also heard mixing water with peppermint oil in a spray bottle and spraying it in the corners of the room and just kinda spritzing it around helps deter spider mites..that they don't like the scent of it? I'm not sure how true it is but it's something im gonna test out. Obviously it won't kill them but if it can deter them that'd be lovely.
You are the first video on this that makes sense. Thank you for the information that you have learned from experience and seeing the results from your efforts. And you sound very intelligent and articulate. So refreshing.
Heating the soil is really effective in killing pests. Last year, I really “cooked” the soil before planting my monstera deliciosa and not observed any pests in the soil Nor in the plant.
Excellent job! Especially since I found spider mites on my superbum a few weeks ago and treated it the same way w/ alcohol and dish soap. The only thing I did differently was to use a hydrogen peroxide drench to sterilize the soil (so I didn't have to repot mine, which is in a 10-inch pot). Yeah, I didn't bother w/ neem either.
Yea I think I heard Harli or someone mention using hydrogen peroxide on the soil but I never tried it. Glad to know it works for u! thanks for that tip!! 😉💚💚
@@KreatyveGardenista Yes, it was Harli G. I mixed up distilled water and peroxide then watered all of my plants. Some of them sprouted out new babies after that.

Battled spider mites last year on my balcony garden and was successful in eliminating them. Then just this morning noticed my pansy's leaves were looking not good. Took a closer look and yup, spider mites AGAIN!! Pulled up & tossed all affected plants, then sprayed all of the 'neighbours' with alcohol, dish soap, & water. Will do them again tomorrow but use your paintbrush technique. Thank you so much!!!
I heard about it also being used for rugs for fleas. Our area has Sandy soil and lots of dogs and no matter how many times I treat my dog, he will bring home a couple and then he's allergic and will itchy until his fur falls out. So frustrating. I'm going to get a bag to sprinkle around our plants and yard area. It sounds amazing.

Wish I saw this comment 3 days ago, all the leaves on my plant have brown/black spots and it looks really sick. It was doing so well, until I used this concoction
Great video! I realize you weren't precise on how much detergent you added but please tell us the mixing ratio for isopropyl alcohol to water. My best guess from watching the video was that you used added 4 oz 70% alcohol, 1/2 oz detergent and 20 oz water to a 24 oz spray bottle. Please clarify the ratio you used as it wasn't clear in the video.
OMG wished I would had seen this video before I cut my rose bush down to the crown after spotting a major spider mite infestation in my flower bed. I have cats and a pet BlueJay that I worry about eating a poisoned bug or getting pesticides from my flower bed on them. I figure I can use your mixture for my flower bed in a bigger quantity perhaps to alleviate my poison fears. The paint brush method and soil treatment is brilliant. I will for now on use this method for my house plants and the soil treatment for my indoor and outdoor planters. Thank you for making this video definitely worth watching and subscribing for your future helpful videos!👍🙂 I am a new plant collector so this will help keeping my rare and expensive plants from dieing from pests.

Just found spidermites on my succulent but moved it closet to my 11 Bonsai trees and now I'm paranoid. It was 6 inches away but still. You're a God send
Most all of my plants are outside so I just treat them with a systemic product like Bifenthrin. This is the same chemical that is in the Rose care isle. Pour in the soil. The plant will drink that water and when the bug bites the plant it will die.

From what I understand about neem you really gotta dilute it good so it doesn't burn or damage your plants and been looking into Diamatacious earth as well so they get chopped up b4 they even make it to plants!!! But if anyone has any suggestions for me PLEASE dont hesitate! I certainly appreciate all the help I can get! Thanks in advance to all and Happy Growing everyone!!!👍✌
Home Depot is famous for giving you spider mites!
Bought a lilly it was contaminated my whole garden with these ugly orange like burrowing bugs that climbed up my other 24 older healther plants they ate all the leaves and didnt realize it til my whole garden was contaminated and lastyear it was spider mites bought a money plant and all my indoor plants that i was growing for over 15 year's all contaminated and had to be tosseďnow im paranoid of bugs!!
That's where I got mine from smh 🤦🏾♂️
True story it happen to me....but I’ve only recently heard about desinfectante plants as you bring them home 🙆🏻♀️
Oh my. I have purchased many plants from them.
Here because my hibiscus from home depot had them. Really not gonna buy another plant there.
Love this ! Just realized last night half of my babies are infested but this made me feel a lot better about being able to get rid of them !! Also dying to know what kind of plant that is that you modeled it with, it’s GORGEOUS !!
Thanks it's anthurium superbum! Good luck with your treatments!🍀😉💚
Thank you so much! I’ve been searching for a good method to get rid the bugs on my plants and this has been the BEST explanation of how to do that.
This is what I do too. I have found it to be the most effective way to get rid of mites. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much this is great feedback! I'm glad u found it helpful 😀🌿🌿
Best indoor plant video I’ve ever seen, thank you for sharing. I absolutely love you and the way you care for your plants!!!
Welcome!! And thanks for watching! 💚💚
Not all brands of neeme oil actually works. It need to say “cold pressed”
That is what people fail to understand. Cold-pressed neem oil has the chemical substance that actually gets rid of the soft body pest.
So you mean to tell me that I have been lied to my whole life?!
That plant looks so happy and you have saved a life. Good for you. The spirit of the plant will reward you for that.
Thank you!
Outstanding!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this essential video. Keep up the good work,
I knew I would need this video as I recently started to buy house plants. Yesterday I got a Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma and after closely looking at it I noticed that at the base of the plant there were spider mites. I have it in the guest restroom tub and will be treating it after work. Thank you so much for the detailed video!!!
Same I got a alocasia Polly found out they're known for spider mites it hasn't even been a week and I noticed webbing near dirt and leaves. I'm so happy for this video because I didn't know the proper amount of using anything for it
You can microwave the soil. I've steamed my soil. 180F degrees will kill them eggs and bugs.
So did you just scoop some into a container and microwave it?
@@medomathkour9665 I've not seen any spider mites yet. I read it online from a pro. I steamed my new plant soil when I transplanted upon purchase of all plants.
@@HamsterLife_EnglishLearning you steam the plant or new soil you’ll be using for the plant; which one? And for how long in the microwave? Thank you
I love how you call your plants "she"...all my plants are "he"
Such a great video. I love my indoor plants and have been battling spider mites!! I'm going to follow your treatment exactly!
I'm overjoyed to see a sister lacing some old green thumbs, and yes if you never experienced spider mites, you haven't been growing for long
Thanks for your advice, from another NC plant lover. Fortunately I have never found spider mites or other plant insects in many years with house plants.
That intro killed me, that's what I had been doing. Thanks for this video!
Milk and water spray on leaves also works. Old remedy’s my grandma used. Helps to prevent once their all gone spray about once a month..
Thank you! What is the ratio ? Appreciate
I use half water half milk. I spray leaves and soil about once a month. Haven’t had a problem since. Seems to nourish plant leaves too. Leaves on my Hoyas look amazing since I started doing this.
I also heard using baking flour with milk n dish soap water could work....please lmk if this works 😃
@@ashleykristina2964 maybe will try this with my humidifier
You are the first video on this that makes sense. Thank you for the information that you have learned from experience and seeing the results from your efforts. And you sound very intelligent and articulate. So refreshing.
Heating the soil is really effective in killing pests. Last year, I really “cooked” the soil before planting my monstera deliciosa and not observed any pests in the soil
Nor in the plant.
This is one of the best plant videos I've seen!
GREAT👍 JOB GIRL!
Ty sooooo very much!! I'm going to do this immediately!! All of my plants are on distress; they're gonna be soo happy now!!😘
Very comprehensive video! I got all the supplies and am ready to make up a batch. Thank you for all the great information!!!
@@gloriaa.4858 can you share the info for the peroxide and water solution? I just brought home a new plant and it had spider mites. I'd like to treat the soil and the plant for a few days before repotting.
@@rheagarcia9229 It came from Joyus Garden here on YT. I used 4 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide and just watered it in like normal.
Diatomaceous earth is a great way to top dress soil and leaf application. Saves boiling water or nuking your soil. 👍
@@SherriLyle80s just make sure you get the foog grade one and wear a mask. Its organic but its bad if you inhale a lot of it
Food*
@@SherriLyle80s It stops working if it gets wet. So not really effective in the grass.
@@YSLRD Aw.. thanks for the extra info. That sounds like an important part
I learned more from your video than I have read about for years! I have a Hibiscus who is ailing from spider mites and have tried NeemOil and alcohol and water spraying to no avail. I'm going to try your mixture and am very excited. Thank you.
Such a thorough process. Thanks this was good to know in case I run into this problem. 😩
How to you ensure they aren’t living in your kitchen? Can they live on surfaces, this video made me itch 🥴 that plant looks great to have had all of those spider mites. Great job!
Could you please list all the ingredients including meassurements ?
Yeah, how much detergent & alcohol needed before it’s been diluted. Hope can provide us the measurements. Thank you
Blessings 💞, thank you, just subscribed 😊. That simple mixture got me confident. Went in there spraying like I bought that off the shelf😂
Such an awesomely detailed vid, thanx! Do you just keep the discarded soil, & boil it for future use! Thanx again🍁
Very informative.
I suggest to do this infestation treatment process OUTSIDE your home.
I would suggest as a precaution...first test your concoction on one leaf. If after 24 hrs the leaf is ok then spray the entire plant...
Wish I saw this comment 3 days ago, all the leaves on my plant have brown/black spots and it looks really sick. It was doing so well, until I used this concoction
This is the best video I’ve seen on treating spider mites!! Thank you so so much!!
Nice video! When repeating this process, do you do only the washing part of the leaves and stems or do you also change the soil every time?
Thank you! The plant looked like it was happy after the treatment … I will try
She never gave specific ratios because she said she eye balled the measurements.
Thank you for making this video definitely worth watching and subscribing for your future helpful videos!👍🙂
I am a new plant collector so this will help keeping my rare and expensive plants from dieing from pests.
I am new too and this video really is a solid induction! especially with these curfew times. 🙂
Great video love your personality and technique. Very informative, I have used dish soap before on my plants but it never occurred to me to mix with alcohol. Do you know if the mix would work with hydrogen peroxide vs alcohol and dish soap?
Just found spidermites on my succulent but moved it closet to my 11 Bonsai trees and now I'm paranoid. It was 6 inches away but still. You're a God send
Most all of my plants are outside so I just treat them with a systemic product like Bifenthrin. This is the same chemical that is in the Rose care isle. Pour in the soil. The plant will drink that water and when the bug bites the plant it will die.
New to your channel and I'm glad I found you, great idea for spider mites. I don't have a very large collection of plants but this is all good to know. Thank you and now I will go watch some more of your videos. :)
The 56 thumbs down, I wonder if they have something better to offer. More than likely they don't. You know why they don't. Because if they do have something better to offer, they would share with respect and dignity. Shame on the 56 thumbs down.
I have a serious spider mite problem with my gardenia. I just followed your steps. I didn’t rise it off, I hope it is okay. I will repot later today. Thank you so much for this video!
Man oh man you’re brave to bring that infested plant into your home girl 😂
Thank you so much for this detailed video because I felt like throwing the whole sweet potato plant out. But how you did it gives me some hope. And restoring the soil by using hot water is one for the books. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. ❤
Damnn you voluntarily got such a bad case of spider mites and put it in your home. I would never 😂
Aloha from Maui to N Carolina. Great job!!!! Very Helpful!!!! Blessings & much Aloha!!!!!
Love it!! How much you charge to come in and do home plant care? No, seriously...
I bought my first two algaonema plants and was so happy. They cost me $25 a piece and was infested. I didn't check them at the store. Well, thanks to you they are all better. Thank you
🤸🏾♀️🤸🏾♀️🤸🏾♀️
Using that solution on my calathea ornata killed it. 😭😭 No more spider mites, at least...
I really enjoy watching your videos! I'm glad I found you on here you so down to earth. My kind of person sending you good vibes.
This is such a thorough video! Thank you so much ❤️ ☺️
Ur very welcome!
You are adorable! I love your humorous approach.
Thanks for sharing this info. Can you either put a picture on your IG channel of how it looks now or do an update video on how it's doing?
Oh, also, using boiling water to sterilize potting soil. Wonderful tip. You are a Godsend. Thank you so much.
