This is worth a side trip on any visit to Japan | Nachi Falls

  • I visited Nachi Falls in the Kii Mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Nachi is Japan's highest single-drop waterfall, and was especially gushing today due to snow melt and recent heavy rains. I took a bus from Nachi station on the coast up to the waterfall and hiked up to it. The misty spray hits you before you even get close. I burned a prayer stick and paid extra for the closer viewing platform access. After that I hiked way up the steep stone steps to Kumano Nachi Shrine, where I walked through a gigantic live prayer tree trunk, and visited Seigantoji, an attached Buddhist temple with a classic view of an orange pagoda and the falls.
    It's said that when you visit this area, your soul dies and is reborn, and when you re-enter society afterwards, you're a new and better person. There may be something to that; this was a great trip to a classic piece of mystical Japanese history.

    Wow what an amazing place with an awesome waterfall as well! Great vlog and getting there seemed easy as long as you could figure out the bus to take.

      Thanks again! I always feel that buses are underutilized in Japan... there are blank spots on the map where no trains go, but the bus networks are actually quite impressive (just harder to find quick info about)

    I remember travelling to the waterfalls alone back in 2019 and I was full of negative emotions and thoughts due to life circumstances while climbing up all the steps of the Daimonzaka. However once I saw the falls from the pagoda, I was just blown away by the amazing view. It helps that this area does not have too many tourists so I could take as long as I needed to admire the waterfall in silence. Without a doubt, this became a standout moment of my trip, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to make the journey.
    Thank you for making this great video featuring the falls, it brought back the best memories of my trip!

      Thanks. The falls are quite a ways away from cities like Osaka or Kyoto. It seems on a map like you can do it in a day but that would be brutal. I'd give it 2-3 days because there's lots to see around there

      I would say anytime has its charms, though summer would be hot and humid. Personally I'd avoid that

    How to go there in a day trip?

    • @T1DWanderer
      @T1DWanderer  5 місяців тому +1

      It would be difficult, because it's a long train ride and then a bus ride If you started really early in, say, Osaka, it might be possible. It would mostly depend on the bus schedules

      Heh, there is a good reason for that in Japan! You'd generally render the words, for example, "cork" and "coke" the same in Japanese katakana (closer to "coke", ignoring the "r"). So when they try to go from the Japanese that sounds like "smoke" (スモーク) back to English, they aren't always sure which one it's supposed to be. (Don't know why they don't just ask an English speaker or look it up, but oh well...!)

      @@T1DWanderer interesting! My husband studies more languages than I do- comments on similar things. I find them fun , and suppose it’s expensive to replace signs once mistakes get noticed.

    Could you do this as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka and come back?

    • @T1DWanderer
      @T1DWanderer  9 місяців тому +1

      That would be a tall order. Perhaps technically possible, but that's a lot of rushing around. You'd probably leave very early and get back very late, especially Kyoto, and would have to limit your time at Nachi
