  • After a year or two of planning the big day finally arrives as Cunards three cruise liners arrive in Liverppol to celebrate 175 years since the company was founded. The first part of the video sees Queen Mary 2 departing from the landing stage and moving to the mouth of the Mersey to greet her sister ships. Then, led by Queen Elizabeth with Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 following the three ships move along the Mersey and turn in front of the 'Three Graces' on Liverpools waterfront. The final clip shows a 'blink and you'll miss it' flypast by the Red Arrows. The video was filmed from the promenade near to New Brighton. Queen Mary 2 departed during the afternoon and Queen Elizabeth set sail at 11pm following a firework display on the river. Queen Victoria then moored and departs Liverpool on 26th.May. Queen Mary 2 returns soon to commemorate the anniversary of Cunards first transatlantic crossing

All this - the Mersey and the ships - is part of my family heritage, yet I missed the celebrations! Did not hear a peep about it, yet I only live down the road in Wales! My grandfather worked for the White Star line (later Cunard) and would have sailed in and out of Liverpool before World War I. He was gased in Flanders so was not allowed to return to work on board because he developed TB of the lungs. He then was forced to doing "outdoor" work whenever he could, so ended up a stevedore in Birkenhead throughout WWII. He died a premature death, but was highly respected on the docks. He received a medal for gallantry by jumping in and saving a man from drowning! Thank you for filming and sharing this historic event. :)
P.S. Ignore the thousands of miserable sods who have watched but not clicked on "thumbs up".
As for the grumps... They are only miserable old gits!

This is one truly fantastic upload. You can really see the scale of just how huge and impressive they are when you captured the three of them in line sailing upto the 3 graces in the background. I was there at crosby beach right next to the radar tower. To see the queen mary 2 twirl around right in front of us is not something you see every day!

I remember the QE2 visiting Liverpool late 80's early 90's, and them having a big firework display from a barge moored in the middle of the Mersey. There were 1000's of folk there, it finished quite late at night, the drive home was memorable too, it was past midnight and even as far up as Huyton the roads were bumper to bumper, which shows how proud Scousers are of the Cunard connection, the sheer amount of ppl that turned up for the event was impressive.

I filmed one in 2011 I think it was from just by Seacombe ferry with the fireworks as she left. The video is lurking somewhere on the channel. On the earlier one you mentioned I was on a ferry cruise that was supposed to get you closer to the fireworks but it was very difficult to keep the camera steady with the boat rocking!

An absolutely stunning piece of work Austin, at first I thought it was a shame that the sun wasn't out, but as the video progressed, it was apparent that this lighting was perfect for the event. The way in which you've captured the onlookers in the foreground gives the whole thing scale, and an almost LS Lowry feel about it......Excellent throughout...Bob
