I bought the battery from a 2013 nissan leaf and the cells have held up well for projects and experiments. I think if we start getting more LiFePo4 batteries on the market we will see them live even longer.
With 11 bars on the health meter your looking at aprox 80% to 85% battery life not bad at all for a nearly 10 year old leaf, excellent buy in my book at less then 4k Pounds
I think this "foot hand brake" you're speaking of is actually called a parking brake. In the United States, it used to be common for domestic cars to have the parking brake as a pedal to the left of the clutch pedal (or the brake pedal for automatic equipped cars). Our cars used to come standard with large bench seats, so the modern hand brake didn't really occur to American manufacturers until imported cars from Europe and Japan (which had bucket seats) became popular. We started seeing a few handbrake domestic cars in the 70s but they really started taking off in the 80s.
Yes parking brake sounds far better than my description, but in the UK it's been hand brake for as long as I can remember. I suppose an electric handbrake would be described as a parking brake as well.
I stepped down from a '14 Jeep Grand Cherokee for my Leaf in town. By energy use only it's 8% of the cost. The Leaf is a coffee maker, it's an appliance that does what it should. When I bought my leaf I knew I'd never buy another fuel powered vehicle. When I buy my next BEV, it'll be the simplest model and trim fit for purpose.
The old leaf from 2013 onwards is a great buy if you just need a car to do short journeys and you can charge at home. Love mine. Bought our 2014 just to try out owning an EV and it's been fun to drive. Gets me to work every day just fine.
I’ve a 4yr old Zoe which I only home charge, and I always forget this. It takes the edge off the larger than other EV’s depreciation after the disastrous NCAP score. Another 3yrs and it’s paid for itself against my previous ICE car running costs.
I'm still tooling around on my 2011 one of the original Nissan Leafs. I do nothing but short trips on it and still get 65-70 miles from it, but I have babied the original battery to make it last. Still amazed that there are no rattles or squeaks after all these years.
@@grouchthatbarx I've always made sure to never leave the battery fully charged for any long period of time. If the car is not driven for a long period of time I've maintained the battery SOC between 50-80%. I try to charge the battery to different SOC levels. The car has also been garaged to avoid massive temperature shifts since there is no active thermal control. The only real expense that hit me with this car was a coolant pump for the electric motor at year twelve of ownership. Other than that I've gone through four key fob batteries, flat tire, and three accessory batteries and that is it. Leafs are pretty bad when it comes to draining that accessory battery if you leave idled for a long period of time, but you can remedy that by hooking a charger up to that accessory battery.
@@grouchthatbarx The Gen 1 sure does. But the fix is pretty easy if you have a regular battery charger. I always disconnect the positive connector before connecting a charger to the positive pole of the battery and the negative on either the battery or somewhere on the motor.
A few interesting points. The very first Nissan Leafs were Japanese built. They had the electronic handbrake. Unfortunately the electronic brake is prone to sticking on these cars. The ones with the foot-operated parking brake were built in the UK. The front camera is on the charging flap - that’s where you need it for help with parking. The noises on start-up can be switched off in the settings. Nice to see the car in such good condition! My guess for your car is an Electric VW Golf.
My leaf, a 2012, is down to 9 bars and now only does 40 miles after about 67000. It never did more than 3.5 miles per kWh unless you were around town. Luckily, i dont really have to drive it anymore as i have an EV6 and a Model 3 long range too ☺️
Just bought a Leaf for the missus today. 2014, 61k miles, 80% battery health, £3850. Just need to replace the touch screen digitiser which I understand to be pretty common. Drives absolutely beautifully. I almost regrets buying my Peugeot 3008 a few weeks ago now that I know I could have also had such a bargain.
Grouch re: the brakes. James from Cleveleys recently did his 120k mile video overview of his 71 reg MG5. He is still on the original discs and pads at 120k miles. He gets 40 to 50k from a set of Davanti tyres, and swaps them around to even out the wear.. Battery state of health at 120k was at 92%., and that's with mostly rapid charging out on the road while on-call. As you'll know Grouch, Cleveleys cover from Southern England to Scotland, carrying out EV servicing and repairs....
@@grouchthatbarx Bear in mind that the majority of his mileage will be on smoothly surfaced motorways and main roads. I'd be looking at around half what James gets on the unevenly surfaced country lanes around me.
ANY garage with a phone number should be competent enough to do a brake service on an EV. They’re literally the same as any other car. Anyone who claims not to be able to is a moron who doesn’t want to accept new customers.
Interesting video. I've read that with some evs due to the fact that the car uses regen rather than the brakes, the brakes can rust. Do you think that's what happened with this one?
EV's do suffer with brakes not getting used enough. In the case the car is what I call a seaside car, which means it was owned close to the coast and tend to have more corrosion.
Hi Mr Butties, Great showing of Wales 🏴. You need a CYC motor in the Leaf. It will only last 40 odd mikes but would be great chuckling fun. 🤗🏎️ 🚴
I think you’ve bought a 2018 Nissan LEAF 40kWh but Cat S or Cat N. Needs a new bumper or door etc. cheap cheap. If not category damaged, maybe procured via Mr. J Porterfield?
With only 2 mechanical parts on the drive train you should not have any issues, There's a car lot owner on UTube who describes the car's he buys to sell and honestly tells you what needs doing and I don't understand why anyone would consider buying petrol and diesel as he always has to do something to make them mechanical sound,I will say though that he does the work and would recommend him for used ICE cars, If you have a daughter new to driving she would be safer and better off in electric that's for sure.
I'm on the same tariff, it's Intelligent Octopus Go. You do need a compatible EV or EV charger (I had to install a Zappi to get on the tariff) but once you are set up you get 7.5p for 6hrs between 11:30pm-5:30am and the rest of the time it's 26.5p for me. 39p/kWh seems to be well above the price cap (assuming that home rates and not public charging)?
@@grouchthatbarx The Ohme is a much neater looking charger than the Zappi. I lent towards the Zappi as I'm looking to get solar installed soon so have to option for diverting excess to the car. But, with the current export rate being 15p/kWh I'm financially better off running the house off of the battery during the day (having charged for 7.5p/kWh overnight) and selling all the solar at 15p/kWh. Can't imagine that will last long at those rates, but I guess it's a way to help balance the grid rather than just go for self consumption.

I think VW made a strategic decision not to go for one pedal driving so that people would still use the brake pedal and activate the brakes. I have our car serviced once a year and have the brakes stripped, cleaned and lubed as part of the service. It costs no more than an oil and filter change to do and it gives me peace of mind.

I've got about 79% battery capacity on my 2014, which is 17.5 kWh. That's 61 miles range.
With a 24kwh battery 3.3kw is plenty fast enough for overnight charging, a granny charger would do just fine as well
