I remember quins night club over the road from the bubble bus stops as we called them in the early 80's. Jumped on the 9c bus home after a night out, got off the bus at knotty ash. Back home to listen to 194 radio city peaceful hour. Brilliant days. Putting a request on radio city's peaceful hour to the girl you been dancing with earlier at quins. Cant beat them days.
Just ahead of the Gyratory was the Top Rank Suite which I recall being in the week it opened in December 1969. It was a very atmospheric club that was open to all comers. It had disco music, table food, and a then Liverpool favourite, Pale Ale over Bitter. 2/6d a pint ! Pre -Decimalisation that came upon us in 1971, that saw most prices rounded up, not down. I worked in the city centre mid 60s to early 70s and have wonderful memories of those times. The Penny Farthing pub at the end of St Johns Precinct near the Gyratory was another great venue, and a place often frequented by players from both clubs. Another venue for those around in those days was the Triton Pub on Paradise Street at the bottom of school lane, and facing the Holiday Inn hotel. It had a disco bar on the ground floor, and a very classy bar/lounge on the first floor. When I hear some 1970s music its like a journey back in time. The Triton and Holiday Inn and the well used Bus Station were demolished for the Liverpool One project. The area around the Gyratory now seems cluttered and unattractive. Proving perhaps that the drive for change often loses more aesthetic surrounds. Liverpool should always be grateful to the marvellous architecture bequeathed by its Victorian/ Edwardian forefathers.
0:32 ≥≥≥ Some of the Shops in the background L-R ... : Sportsman bar ( Quinn's early 80s ) . : Habitat. : Peter Collinge hairdressers ( Taken over in the 90s by son Andrew Collinge ) : City Pets underneath hairdresser's on street level. (Now a Bar)
When we lived in The Swan, it was easy getting any of the 9's or 10's home. Parents bright idea to move to Wooly Widnes. 1 I got relentless at school and 2 only the Crosville H5 once an hour.
2019: Cameraman approached by a PCSO, accused of being a terrorist "in this day and age" PCSO then calls police backup, asked for ID, searched, falsely arrested for a pubic order offence or hurting someone's feelings. I miss the old days lol.
If you took film of anything these days, the police would shit themselves , as you had a camera !! You would be accused of terrorism and all kinds of nonsense.!! How times have changed, and not for the better !
Those fuckin awful circular concrete bins, Jesus Enough to make any self worthy Liverpudlian leave town , never mind the rest of the Shit we had to put up with ;(
