  • This is Drew, who's recently moved from America to London and needed to pass his UK driving test in order to continue driving here, he has 20 years of driving experience in the states. He came to us to do a few lessons to get use to the roads and a better understanding of roundabouts. We then did this mock test to see how he does and to see areas that needed a little more work.

I was able to pass my test at first try. Thank God first and DGN Driving School and Drive London. Thank you Guys!
    Guys some tips:
1 - Simply exaggerate with the mirrors and blind spot! No matter what, look to the mirrors as much as you can. It counts a lot.
2 - Don't get panic if you make a mistake and see the examiner writing down. Sometimes he / she is just writing some mistake you've done 5 or 10 minutes ago.
3 - Watch these videos as much as you can in order to avoid common mistakes. Seriously! Watch it until you hear the ring sound (Red - Serious Driving Fault, Yellow - Driving Fault and Green: Brilliant;) during the lessons, mock test and real test. Master it and be focused.
4 - Don't forget to study show me / tell me questions. They will ask you these questions and it counts in your favor.
    Basically this!
Guys, happy new year and good luck!

A lot of people judge Americans because most of them drive automatic, but when you consider the level of traffic jams they have, especially in LA, well I certainly wouldn't drive manual under such circumstances you'd get sick of needing to move around the gear lever for every small forward roll. This guy obviously lives here, so driving manual has perhaps more relevance for when he passes which I expect to be very soon since he's doing brilliantly.

CargoRay Erm.. dangerous fault and serious fault technically mean the same thing... and second of all it was pouring down with rain which meant it was harder for me to see and we was at a really busy three lane roundabout and other cars were on the zebra crossing I was in the middle so my view was restricted and I wasn’t able to see anyone cross. I thought it was clear and I was ABOUT to move off I didn’t move off yet, and the instructor just pressed the brake. It’s not that deep lol I only had one serious mistake so yeah I would’ve passed if it wasn’t for someone running across the zebra crossing and if cars weren’t on it in the first place which makes it harder to see anyone crossing.

Those times going into first at mini-roundabouts at then looking is probably from what I observe in the US, where there are STOP signs at every junction, drivers looking after they stop and the habit becomes so i grained that drivers will sometimes stop where there is no stop sign ( they have priority) but the crossing road does have stop signs. Just something I've observed.

I really REALLY hate that they added sat nav into the "independent driving" portion of the test. Learning how to follow road signs is a much more important skill than blindly following a sat nav. There are countless examples of people ending up in places they really shouldn't be by following the sat nav, ranging from not following posted official road diversion routes when roads are closed (either for incidents or roadworks) to people who end up driving down launch ramps into the sea. Sat navs are useful, but what's more useful is reading and understanding road signs, and using your own critical thinking to judge whether or not you're about to do something stupid.

Really harsh on this chap, especially with the minor faults for ‘planning for lights’ apart from the left turning one, I was taught when you reach the closest marking and it’s on green/amber if you brake then it will be too harsh and a fault. Not saying he passed as the exit on the roundabout was dangerous but I’d let him drive my car. Thought the corner cut was harsh too, cars were parked on both sides of the road

Wow! I would be perfectly happy as a passenger with this American driving! Honestly, he is a better and safer driver than many who have passed the UK Driving Test in the past fifty odd years! I do not understand why the test places so much emphasis on 'making progress' and penalises safer 'hesitancy'.
After eight one hour driving lessons in 1965 I failed my first driving test due to 'insufficient use of the rear view mirror' (it was perfectly adjusted and I frequently glanced at it, at any time I could have told the examiner the make, model and registration number of the vehicle behind me) and 'unduly slow progress in traffic'. A dozen candidates were in the waiting room and eleven left on time leaving me to wait fifteen minutes for my examiner. We successfully turned right into heavy traffic but a few miles on I was asked to turn right into a side road. No one was giving way but the examiner became impatient and shouted "Come on, come on, this truck will give way" - it did not. I knew that road, he asked me to take the next left turn, there was a ninety degree left bend with a private entrance on the right. So, after passing this private entrance I asked him if I should take the next left turn and he angrily retorted "No, no, no we already did that"!
After a delay to book another driving test and four more lessons I attended a quieter suburban test centre. The examiner was friendly beyond my expectations. With "May I call you Alan" and "You've picked a nice sunny day for your test" and " I am sure you will do well"! What a difference, I passed with no faults.
Fifty five years on I watch these driving instruction channels to try to keep up to date. I am no longer a 'boy racer' but I still make excellent progress, especially on national speed limit, windy, narrow country lanes.

There was poor use of the indicator when pulling away from the kerb sitting with it on when there wasn't an opportunity to pull away. Had someone stopped that would have been a serious fault. Considering you edit the first time you instructed him to set of from the side of the road suggests you were there for quite some time, indicator active for all of the time we see here, leading me to presume it was on for the entirety of the wait for a space.
There was also a couple of times when it's stated in the video as good mirror checks with indication where it wasn't, he indicated before checking the mirror, and the correction at the roundabout with the road markings, he started to manoeuvre, steering, before checking the mirror where you also say he performs the correction appropriately. Also, there was a couple of times when the indicator was used before driveways that could have been turned into which I think is misleading for traffic behind. For the second that seems to be some kind of scrap business, it shouldn't be let go because there's little reason a driving school car would be entering there, when he'd be driving independently he would be misleading other road users.
He also doesn't appear to be looking particularly far down the road. When the bus stops on the left after one of the amber runs, it indicates to pull behind the standing bus but your student fails to plan to drive around, they panic when they're approaching and almost indicate while poorly positioned for driving around the by that point stationary bus. Positioning could potentially have been better with the car earlier with it's hazards on, either slightly further to the right or further back for a better view of the road ahead. When he stops he has to lean in his seat to see past, poor planning there too. The 2 amber runs would also suggest that lack of looking down the road, the cause if his lack of planning.

As do a lot of other countries. I've just had a look in to it, and apparently most of our right eyes are dominant as opposed to the left one, so in theory, it makes more sense to be on the right as that eye can monitor more. Plus, I don't really see what's wrong with us driving on the correct side.

It's why 2nd hand cars are so cheap in the UK though: nearest place they can be exported to is Japan so the market's entirely domestic.

No, the rest of the world decided to change and drive on the right. We've always driven on the left.

Actually being on the left comes from the Romans, Britain, Japan and I think Australia kept that, it was Napoleon and the French empire that changed most of Europe to the right, and America followed suit

Why is he doing driving lessons and a driving test if he has been driving for 20 years? You can just send your foreign licence in to the DVLA and they will change it for a uk one.

foreign licenses (non-EU ones) only work for a year when entering the UK. after that you have to pass a UK test. and this video shows why, even with 20 years driving experience he still failed the UK test.

boo453 not quite correct for all countries. I swapped my Australian licence for a UK licence after a year without having to sit a test. But then Australia and the UK both drive on the left and have very similar road rules so there’s no need to re-test.

Not quite. If you have a US license then you can drive in the UK with an American license for up to 12 months. After that you will then need to apply for a UK provisional license and pass the UK particle test. You don't need to take lessons before the test as there is no legal requirement but it is recommended to get take some to brush up on UK highway code standards when it comes to driving.

Alex Bell what rubbish, I’ve just traded my foreign licence for a U.K. one. No tests whatsoever. Also... what’s a “particle test” anything similar to a practical test?
