The Mount Airy Lodge commercial were all over the New York and Philadelphia-area channels back in the 80s. We couldn't get away from "Beautiful Mount Airy Lodge!" As for the Franklin Mills Mall commercial, I have lived in an area served by the Philadelphia media market for 30 years, and I never saw that commercial! The guy who played Benjamin Franklin was an icon, you could see him walking around Independence Mall. I was in a news van going to a live shoot when I was interning at the CBS station there, and the photographer I was with saw Thomas Jefferson walking around and yelled out the van window. And then we saw Benjamin Franklin and he was all "BENNNN!" The guy playing Jefferson stayed in character, but man, Ben Franklin was super jovial. People loved him, and you know he loved playing that part!

+OddityArchive; another fun episode; as a native NYC'er,, I thank you for knowing her name 's Luba (that's Mrs Potamkin 19:57), and she was a local TV legend. l remember when the Halloween party (down on Christopher St) was actually fun, and not full of tourists, I remember seeing more than a few drag queens decked out as her. She was SO successful that when her husband (Victor ) sold the dealerships, the business went way down and Cadillac BEGGED then to return. Sadly, Luba had Alzheimer's and passed away in the mid-90's, but there's another Luba spot on UA-cam, which I remember from many a late night; it was a 'disco' party for '79, or there about. Potamkin's STILL in business - and VERY successful (I don't know if any actual Potamkin children are involved with it). As always, thanks for an enjoyable show!
If you ever do another one of these, you should talk about the Miracle Homes commercials from 2005 if you haven't already. This local home builder from Southeastern Wisconsin was able to snag former 2D animators from Disney to make some of their ads. It's surreal to see local commercials have such fluid animation.
@@rionthemagnificent2971 Hundreds of thousands did over 64 years. In a dismal marketplace Tom Raper was rated quite highly. Chicken Delight was also in my town growing up in NJ - it was an American operation before the Canadian arm bought it out completely and the only remaining US locations were around New York City. I remember that RB Furniture spot as that aired on all the local stations here in L.A. at the time (Mostly on KTLA and KTTV). I believe it first aired in either '79 or '80 (In other words toward the end of the disco era) but in spite of that fact that ad was so popular it stayed on until the end of the '80s. I'm sure if it had stayed around a few more years until the '90s that would have been one of the few ads that would have gone back in style. By that time if I remember correctly they were in financial trouble and went out of business sometime during that decade.
11:00 As a New Englander, I can confirm there have been similar occurrences, but with people singing about Market Basket (mainly because they have no TV commercials) 11:36 Why does every deep-voiced Australian man sound like Greg Page? 18:32 Somewhere, a Pixar executive was watching this ad on an old off-air recording and was like "I think I have an idea for us and Disney's next big cash cow"

a comnercial from manitoba is the LAST thing i expected! great vid from brandon manitoba
11:00 As a New Englander, I can confirm there have been similar occurrences, but with people singing about Market Basket (mainly because they have no TV commercials)
11:36 Why does every deep-voiced Australian man sound like Greg Page?
18:32 Somewhere, a Pixar executive was watching this ad on an old off-air recording and was like "I think I have an idea for us and Disney's next big cash cow"
I'm a little surprised that you didn't feature the more... modern Tom Raper commercials from the 90's. They're a lot more interesting than the one you showed on here.
The Dietrich furs ad still runs regularly in the Detroit area during the holidays.
Love the video and your commentary. Please make another one of these videos again soon.
I wish you could find Philadelphia’s funniest commercials of all time: Rondo H. Slade for “Clear Plastic Slip Covers”, with Alvin, The Singing Telephone. The best UHF TV commercials of the Seventies! Enjoyed this OA immensely.
8th & Welnut? That is Police, City Hall & Fire Dept.
A-Police
B-City Hall
C-Fire Dept
I haven't seen Leo's pest control in a long time. Thanks for the flashback!
That 3rd Krass Bros ad had me wheezing 😂😂😂
Also that BF Goodrich store must have been owned by the mob. Those appliances could've been stolen from trucks.
I busted out laughing when you said uh oh when Tom Raper's name appeared.
Who knew...the great Michael Larson working at a furniture store...
2:10 I had a dream about this last night (8-11-2021) but this was a dentist office with some large elevator.
I used to see Leo’s commercial on TV back in the day. I’m old! Hometown commercial. 😂😂
The 70/37 truck stop is a TA truck stop with a sabarro popeyes and a Bob evens
Nice John Waters/Maryland reference! Great video!
I dunno man. That franklin mall commercial was pretty good.
That Affilliated Supermarket commercial makes me think of the old Epcot attraction Kitchen Kabaret.
I particularly love your local TV specials Ben, But I just cant forgive you for permanently scarring the "Grayhound Motors" jingle into my brain. It''s with me for life now and I exclusively blame you 😂
Dial 411 for San Diego foreign .... yet the phone number is in the background each time.
Also Dale D. Madison of QVC fame was in the Big B Supermarket Commercial. "The Lipsinking" black guy.
Not really local (unless you count the Western states as “local”), but reminds me of Patricia Heaton and her Albertsons commercials.
@@619_mitch So your from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, or Arizona?
@@graymanmedia Southern California (San Diego). We have plenty of Albertsons out here (they recently bought Safeway/Vons).
LOL Growing up in Indiana, I remember Tom Raper RV’s. Another Indiana staple is Don’s Guns.
Oh, come on Benny Boy that Benjamin Franklin commercial was...Electric. (doing the Franklin slide)
yes i was waiting for another one, thanks.
the man with with the cowboy hat with the coffee tables in the background is from winnipeg manitoba canada he passed away his name was nick very nice man
Just one question: where did the guy on the box finish in the Mario Andretti lookalike contest?
2:31 how his face morphed to an unnatural smile...
I'm still sad they took down the giant Benjamin Franklin head down from Franklin Mills. And then they rebranded as Philadelphia Mills.
My favorite channel 📼🎥
11:45 Your “intervention” is priceless 😂
It seems insane that we put up with this kind of video quality in the 80's.
looks like much of "Beautiful Mount Airey Lodge" was abandoned and demolished while the main building is now a casino

11:25 Mount Gambier represent!
You know something I could never figure out. Why do mattress stores always have huge sales on President's Day?
How old is that auto parts ad that it did the alpha prefix part? When did they stop doing that? I would have said the 60s.
It's pretty dang old probably the 1970s.
"Cheese ain't purty... Cheese ain't nothin' but dried up old goat's milk.
At Allied Discount Wine and Cheese, we got, the same kinda cheese errybody else got, but we've got it cheaper, and wine..."
Mount Airy Lodge was reopened as Pennsylvania’s first (non-Native American owned) (legal) gambling casino, owned by (alleged mob associate) Louis DeNaples, founder of DeNaples Auto Parts junkyard, (unofficial motto: “We know where the bodies are buried”)
I can remember in Middle School laughing my ass off everytime a commercial for Tom Raper came on
