I always strived to have a “perfect home” even with humble things or homes. I remember when I had my first home and we didn’t have a lot of money. We were lucky enough to rent this filthy trailer. Lucky because the small town had homes that already had residents and apartments that were 1000.00 back in 1982. (Extremely high for the times) I cleaned that trailer for a week and the community gave me little treasures. I remember feeling that my home was a mansion. I’ve always kept that feeling but as “perfect” as I kept it my children and Grandchildren have played, laughed and had a good time in it. We bought a large home 25 years ago after years of military service. I always say, strive for what you want but love and happiness is what should fill your home. A home filled with those things is a perfect home 🥰 ~Janet 😘

I LOVED my little Mobile home when I was a poor single mom. I wallpapered it and it had vintage appliances. I was so grateful. It’s good to be poor at one time or another.

Most of us cannot afford to get rid of all the furniture and decor in our homes and start over with a new trend. Finding a balance that makes each of us feel contentment and comfort and welcoming to family and friends is a wonderful goal. For you younger people and those just starting out or starting over no matter where you begin enjoy the journey and the pieces you select. Second hand stores are full of possibilities and sometimes you will find high quality furniture for a fraction of the cost for new. Making a house/apartment/trailer a home is such a blessing and a gift to others who enter it. Be well all, and enjoy your journeys 😊

We live in the mountains of Northern California, our home is unrelentingly knotty pine, and with a distinct orangey hue. Be when we add soft points of light everywhere, and quilts galore, and even a beautiful golden retriever, it’s the most cozy atmosphere you could imagine. I do so wish I could add a picture or two. This house sat on the market for over a year. I think people couldn’t get past the darkness, we revel in it.

Beautiful video, the message is absolutely powerful. Every now and then I need to be reminded that I am blessed beyond my comprehension, i have a home and God give me tools (health, creativity and time) to make it beautiful for me and my family. Just because we don't have a mansion or an extensive budget doesn't mean we cannot have a beautiful, clean warm home.

    Hi Rachel! How goes it?
I enjoyed the video. I don't need or really want a 'pinterest perfect' home. I want a home that's perfect for me. Beautiful yes, but comfortable enough to sit, prop up feet and heck even slouch if I feel so inclined. I like that a home evolves and changes just as we do. Well, hopefully we do. I look forward to see how you paint your kitchen cabinets to lighten up the room. It's so satisfying to be able to see all that we can accomplish isn't it. I feel it's important to add to the poetry of life especially with all the ugly in the world these days. Gotta feed the beauty. Take care.🌸💕

I think perfect is a state to aspire to but once it is achieved it looses its charm. The journey is far more enjoyable, rectifying, remodelling, creating, changing, upcycling - all the good stuff - thats part of the joy of life. The sense of achievement along the way - priceless. My greatest treasures are a 1920s camelback wing chair in a beautiful light salmon pink. It was $75 at a local Drs estate sale. He had never married and had only his elderly Dad. I also got a 1860 brass plant stand with rose marble. $22. Both of these in perfect condition. The plant stand was said to be his grandmother's. I felt sad his things were going to strangers but I knew they would be loved and treasured in my little very imperfect 1930s cottage. When I bid on them I could see them in my room. I never thought they would end up in my budget. I got artwork from him too. One is a gorgeous large bridge and village print in a beautiful gold frame perfectly matted. It was $4. His house was big and beautiful. His things made my house look more like the pinterest perfect. I enjoy my little house and it's challenges. My husband picked a plaid masculine quilt and some dark sheets. It is not in my pinterest theme but he loves it. It looks very much like him. I did style the mantle and hung Paris prints around. I remind myself it is our home. We enjoy it. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Mrs.Rachel I agree with you .There is a different between a house and a home. A home is a comfortable, loving place and works with the family that lives there. A house that could be beautiful but does not make it a home. A home is place that becomes a place that is your own. Which makes it wonderful, because you will see your family figure prints all over.

A thought provoking video indeed!!!! My husband and I bought our starter home 15 years ago and we're still here! The process of having that Pinterest-y home has been slow. We still have the popcorn ceilings, the really ugly dated builder-grade master bath
room, the badly cracked walkway to the front door to name a few.
But it's been decorated beautifully and uniquely through thrifted finds, hand-me-downs and diys. I've learned to be a decent cook over the years in our small but lovely kitchen. We've turned out backyard into a mini homestead with raised beds and fruit trees. Our home is happy. Our neighborhood is modest yet very peaceful and quiet.
Your wonderful video was exactly the healing message I needed to hear today. It was a reminder of all of the good that is already present. The popcorn ceilings and nasty shower will get upgraded one day. The walkway will get fixed. But I can drop the comparisons and frustrations and cultivate the attitude of gratitude!!! BTW Rachel....Your home is just charming and you can feel the atmosphere of love that you've infused it with! 💕🏡👍😀

What a wonderful message, Rachel! I am always striving for that perfect home based on the images I see in books, magazines, UA-cam, etc., but the lived-in home IS the perfect home! I always say that if I had a lot of money, I would still shop the way I do now....at the thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, etc. To me, it is so much fun, and my home decor is unique because of it! A thoughtful and reflective video….. reminds us that creating a home that reflects you, your interests and your style (and NOT a home filled with trendy decor you saw on someone’s Instagram feed or at the big box store) is okay. Loving your home just the way it is - even if your “to-do” and “dream worthy” project lists are always full - is also okay. The decorating journey never ends…. that’s why it’s so much fun! ❤️

As a bride, I tried to keep a perfectly clean, organized home just as my grandmother did. She was obsessed with cleaning. I didn't see that she was an artist with a needle and very creative. I saw crisp organdy curtains, shiny floors, death organized closets, ironed sheets, and a swept porch.. I didn't see that she got up very early every morning in order to do all that work. She didn't stop all day.. When my 3 children came along I stayed frustrated trying to keep a perfect home. Finally my friend told me that I was missing so much. So I kept a clean home where babies were rocked and sang to, children were played with, in the backyard, and things weren't perfectly kept. I'm a great grandmother now I wouldn't trade a cluttered, imperfect home where babies still come to play for a mansion that's perfect.

Thank you. At 62 I’m getting ready to move into my parents 1950’s track home. I was left the home in 2008. Just wasn’t ready to move into it so I let my son move in. Before that I gave up my dream home a 1930’s Cottage I was renting to possibly buy in a historic neighborhood. I gave up that dream to be able to afford for my son to go to college. Even though I was working two jobs I couldn’t afford both and moved to a sorta free home on the family ranch. Years later my moms home which she loved so much looks terrible. After letting my daughter in law and son take down wallpaper and make it more their style. Well the house is a terrible mess. I also lost my job many years ago from a illness so little money to do much. So I’m struggling to try to make this house me and more like my mother had it. We both had the same vintage taste. You were inspiring so thank you.

I do get inspired by Pinterest photos and magazines, it's just gives you ideas for decorating and color. I noticed your cabinets and mine were like that for years. I didn't always love them, grew very tired of the dark color but was afraid to delve into changing them. I finally made up my mind, researched exactly how to do it correctly and we painted them this past spring. It was such hard work, there's sanding, cleaning, sanding, priming, sanding, and painting, sanding, painting again and again. It's a lot of work but I've been sooooo happy with the end result. Wish I had painted them years ago but I appreciate your view on this. It's true that we Live in our homes, they're not for show ❤️

Hi Rachel!! So happy you visited this Friday pre Labor Day. I want to share a thought/memories of my own kitchen. The cabinets are old, so well made, never dreaming of taking them away. But, they were dark. I researched for so long, beginning 5 years ago, how to diy my new finish. I took on this project in the winter, allowing myself free from the yard, etc. I started with removing all doors and drawer fronts, labeling them. I put them in the basement, out of sight. I was left with the "fronts", inside cabinets were not to be touched, nor inside drawers. I used liberal amounts of de-glosser, worked beautifully. I used a good primer, brush and roll, tight foam roller. Let sit for 3 days. Another coat, very thin. Here is the beauty, General Finishes Milk Paint. Not cheap but after 3 thin coats, spread out to cure over several days, probably weeks. Topping off with General Finishes sealer. What a joy!! Hard work but I saved $$$. And love them better since re-viving!
Fast forward 4 years, beautiful. No chips, no scratches. Solid as a rock. I used Alabaster, I did not want stark white, but a muted antique color to bring in bright + warmth. I will never regret the choices, the winter so cold that turned so beautifully warm in my own kitchen.
There is a perfect home, it is the one you work at, without short cuts. The projects you slow down with. It is a harmony. I treasure you, so sorry for the lengthy reply.
    Love, Lina from Idaho

This is very true! Observing VS Living in a home. I realized that when I have to consider functionality while decorating according to my aesthetic and for family members that are also co-dwellers with different requirements. I also realized that avoiding shopping for decors on major retail stores and going to thrift or antique stores instead made my home unique and definitely mine. Not a copy from a certain home reno tv shows. Though reno tv shows are indeed an amazing design reference, you can’t deny that they all give the same look and feel. The excitement don’t last and eventually the become boring!

I’ll share one of my stories of limitations. We live in an old two bedroom house, we’ve raised our four children here. The kitchen cabinets are metal, from the fifties. I had painted them several times and they were rusted and the rust was showing through on the cream colored cabinets. I was so very disappointed that I couldn’t have new. I painted them with a fifties flare, made them look like enamelware, with speckles! It was a lot of work! But the lower cabinets I painted dark, and the upper light and the speckles mean you don’t see the rust, and I have a kitchen Like no one else, and now I like it.Making do can be a blessing because it challenges us, and we create!

Rachel I so needed to hear this today. I have been struggling with my style for years n have been flip-flopping to farmhouse from Primitive the French country back to Primitive now cottage I’m losing my mind really. it is because I look at all the Instagram accounts and all their homes are so gorgeous and I want my home to look like that. including Pinterest that makes you think you could have the perfect looking home. But in reality it really isn’t true. I’m really asking myself now what do I like what is it that I really like. Not what Sally Sue is doing or this gal is decorating with what is it that I like what appeals to me and that’s my starting point. thank you for saying this that an imperfect home is perfectly OK. God bless

      Good morning Miss Cathy!
I'm happy to know you found some helpful inspiration from your visit. It really is true, what you like and what works for your family is the perfect style for you. Don't be afraid to mix your favorite elements from different styles! A mixture of the Primitive, French country, and farmhouse would be lovely if that's what you really love. sometimes the best spaces are the ones where people "break" the decorating rules, create spaces that they adore, and end up inspiring themselves and others with a wonderfully unique look! Who knows, this could be the case with your mix of styles. Thank you so much for sharing and have a lovely Monday!

I Love your plate rail and the shape of your cabinets. All you'd need to make them a bit more cottagy would be to paint them. You've got a great foundation.
I'm in the middle of transforming a rather modern townhouse into something more comfortable and lived in French Provincial -I think the quirks of converting the space make it more comfy.

      Good morning Miss Alissandra,
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Yes, this kitchen does have a good foundation and painting it would easily take it to the next level of cottage coziness! Your remodel, with all it's fun quirks, sounds like such a fun adventure! Thanks for dropping by and have a lovely Autumn day. 🍂🍁

Did I make a comment on this theme recently? I hear what you say here, loud and clear. I have days when I feel this optimistic about my imperfect home, it's just that there are projects that need doing that I have waited years for. Things I find hard to do on my own just don't get done unless they are absolutely necessary for our safety , like not falling through the bathroom floor. What do you do when your patience wears too thin and you start getting irritable? Someone to do the work would be great, but we can't afford to pay anyone what they should be paid. I should be more thankful to have a roof over my head etc, etc.. but it's a struggle for me. I can't be the only one. Pray for me and my family too! ~ Heather ~

I already follow you both! I especially love your channel as it is my style of decorating. My tastes have changed over the years, but home is mostly to where I want it to be. I change out the decor seasonal as that brings me peace and joy to enjoy my surroundings [maybe my family secretly enjoys it too?]. I fill my home with things that I love, but to others may not be their taste or out of style. What makes a home is what is unique to you!
