At what point was it a scam? He let his insurance policy expire. 6 months car insurance policy is the standard thing here in States. If you let it expire and drive without insurance they'll suspend your license and registration, then you'll have to pay $600 fine and then you'll have to file with the state proof of insurance for 3 years. He has only himself to blame for what happened. I'd also like to see the details of criminal case, because knowing this character, I think it was 5 months after his policy expired, not 5 minutes.

Not exactly a scam, but in many Canadian jurisdictions, a house developer will bury in the contract, if the value of the house increases before it's built, they can charge you the difference, or refund any deposits. So, after you discovered your not yet built home has increased in value 50k, you can pay the new price, or get a refund and walk away.

Two great things from Russia - Mayuri Dance group in Petrozavodsk and Leonid and Friends band. Check them out Sam if you didn't know about them. Talking about car scam - I paid $29000 for a Nissan Patrol the dealer confirmed everything is great - I trucked it in like a fool without inspecting - because it needed 5 hour travel. Found out it had 300 faults and had to sell it 1/2 the price. Then a local dealer sold me a Ute - looked great only 231k on the clock - within 3 months engine blew up and now it is sitting in a shed never to be driven unless I can afford another $10000 to buy an engine and fit. So if local dealer can do that imagine how much others will do that if they know you are not from the country.

Mate, building a house or decorating a flat, everyone is supposed to be prepared for paing over a calculation...Nobody is able to foreseen all issues...
Yes, and it is the reason why so many building companies 'go to the wall.' It is very hard to always get the prices right and there are always extra hidden costs not seen at the point of contract. Just look at HS2 in England. The cost of the train line just mushroomed over time, even the government got it wrong and the whole scheme has cost some 84 billion pounds and the line still does not even reach central London. They say that quantity surveyors are some of the most important people in a project as their forecasting or better to say bad forecasting can lead a company to bankruptcy.
Had a 2 year lease on a credit card machine and account... After 2 years, I returned the equipment and they said I had a 4 year lease.. Race home, check the contract and, yup, they typed a 4 where the 2 should be... After 4 years I returned it. A year later they debited my account for 60 dollars. Made Wells Fargo bank reverse the charge... They had buttered me up with lunch and the woman was so nice, in retrospect I realize they distracted me to cheat me.
Do you have to buy car insurance and car tax in Russia? I wonder why as a single man, you have built such a huge house? On my own, I could live in something much smaller and would have finished it all off by now, even a small one bedroom house would be enough for me on my own. As for scamming, even in England with the English language, people are being scammed all the time. Unfortunately, I have little sympathy for you scammed friends. Many years ago, we went to the county court as my Polish wife had signed a contract and I thought we stood a good chance of winning. However, as it turned out, the judge told us that under the law of contract, it does not matter if you can read the contract or not, the contract is still valid. So even in England, a country with long legal traditions signing a contract you do not understand gives you no excuse not to be forced to comply with the terms. I suppose we all have 'to live and learn.'
Insurance of damage caused by my car to another is mandatory. This is a payment for the repair of someone else's car or loss of health. The price depends on the power of the car's engine, region, and driving experience. My car is 158 hp. in a big city, about $ 80 per year. Full insurance of your car or home is voluntary. Cheap cars and houses are usually not insured.
Is it advisable not to own a car in Moscow? I saw UA-camrs showing awesome public transportation in Moscow. I’m tired of driving, I rather use a bicycle or walk and run. I’m planning just to use trains, buses and occasional taxis. Thanks for any information.
I agree with Michael, having a huge house is a lot of work. I own several houses in California USA and just tired of maintenance, high utility bills, insurance, property taxes. I wanted to get rid of all my properties and move to Moscow in a small condo and explore the city on foot.
@@dashtemargo2337 No issues at all. Public transportation in Moscow, and in Russia in general, is very well developed. Moscow has an extensive network of bus, electric bus, and tram routes, plus one trolleybus route, as well as the metro. And you can call a taxi anytime using Yandex Taxi.
I think the problem is that people will come here now who perhaps do not want to particularly come to Russia but rather who just don’t want to live where they currently are.
I’m currently living in China and I’m working for a company that I thought was a good company after all the paper work was done, they paid for my flight here and hotel stay but when I decided to quit I had to pay all that back on top of extra stupid fees that don’t make sense. But I’ve learned my lesson, and I’m trying not to hate China or Chinese people but I’m quit furious about how they took advantage of me and they are also doing this to other Americans and foreigners. My reasons for quitting is that once you start working for the company they take advantage of you and make life miserable for you they break labor laws here in China and work you like a slave.

When I moved from Germany to America in 1957 I would have fallen for any scam, because I was poor and dumb and had no money, so nobody could steal anything from me, what I do not have. But they scammed me in so far, that I ended up in the American military service 9 days after I arrived in the US. There are always people who would like to steal your money including some government agencies. Sam, thank you for this interesting video. Your new home is in a nice neighborhood. I also live in a quiet countryside.
Sam, in Germany, Germans born get scammed (around 10.000 a year) when buying cars Nice looking car with for example 30.000 kilometers sold very cheap but in reality the car has over 400.000
A new video suggestion for you, Sam. The Texas family and other expats in Russia have mentioned how the registration requirement has created difficulties for them, so how about you make a video where you explain in detail what this registration thing is, what difficulties are associated with it and how best to navigate them?
This just highlights the necessity to speak the language of the country you're moving to. People seem to believe if they just spoke English they would get by everywhere because everybody on the planet speaks English, or so they think. Before I moved from Germany to Australia I used to watch a program on German tv about German's emigrating to other countries. Many of them returned home after just a couple of months and language was the main reason. Even though I think I'm going to end up in Australia permanently, I'm learning Spanish, French, and Russian. It's not very fast, not very efficient, I'm on my own using mobile phone apps, but if I planned to move to Russia I'd certainly ramp up my efforts to learn Russian long before I did the actual move so that I would be proficient in Russian when I arrive in Russia, similarly to the level of English I had when I arrived in Australia.
Thanks for sharing your experience. In Norway a very common scam is when you pay for everything before the work is finished and one day the company is suddenly gone and on top of it the work that is done less than half is done very cheap and poor quality. Never pay before the work is done and at the price that was agreed on. And of course you get what you pay for so it doesn’t pay off to choose the cheapest option.

Hi, good learning vlog about being new to Russia. Similar stories still happen. A friend of mine was working at a company that has provided her with a car that was leased from a dealer. The contract said that if you drive the car for 2 years, you can buy it for half the price. So she liked the car and totally was gonna buy it, but guess what, it got stolen the very first night after that 2 year period ended. They've been waiting for that moment and they knew exactly where she'd been parking it...)

Your friend is lucky. I hope that they will get their savings back. But, that is nothing.. My brother was lucky enough to be scammed by his best friend and best man on his wedding... Even though I have told him not to, my brother agreed to be guarantor for his home loan... It didn't take long for him to find out that he was scammed, because his friend handed to him paperwork and told him that since he is stupid he can pay loan from start. He was thinking that his friend is just joking, until bank started to chase him. Needless to say, even though he attempted to not to pay ended up working 7 days a week for at least 12 hours shifts (3 jobs) for over 20 years.
The Russian Unorthodox Church is manned by FSB agents. It has been run by the secret police ever since Stahlin brought back the Church to inspire Christians to fight his former NAZI allies. Russia is devoid of the love of Jesus. That is what happens when you have atheists running your churches. You should stay as far away from German philosophy as possible. Both Marxism and Nazism were birthed based on German philosophy. It is a great way to start a death cult which describes modern Russia best.
Municipal fees for services that arn't wanted - like special water services, garbage collection fees if you don't use garbage collection, government ID fees for government IDing purposes, amazon splitting up orders into multiple payments if you buy them all at the same time resulting in bank charges for the purchases due to the number of orders they are split up into when buying a lot of items at the same time. Property tax assessments WAY higher than the actual retail value of the house so that taxes on the property will be more, Drivers for perfectly working hardware not being updated to work with newer OS - so you need to buy a newer version of the product with the driver even if they could just have made a new driver for the old product as easy. These are the ones that are most annoying, these are sort of "Structural" scams by government and businesses. I am not actually sure if amazon somehow benefits from breaking orders up to qualify as a scam but it definately hits me for petty extra especially on low value purchases that it feels like a mini scam cause it inflates the price of the transactions by $1 or $2, when you already paid a monthly fee for free shipping they still manage to make a per transaction fee in there. Also in general rather high application processing fees are usually scammy its like it takes 5 minutes to review a document and make a decision but they are billing say $75 to look at the application that is a page long, sort of feels scammy.

What is common in the U.S. is for the contractor to walk away from paying for supplies, leaving it to the lumber yard to go after the property owner. We became aware of this practice, and elected to pay the lumber yard, directly. Well, this upset our contractors house of cards, as he was sinking the money into his own, McMansion. In the end, we recovered the most we could from his bond. The lumber yard felt cheated because they didn’t get a piece of it, although they knew what was going on, all along, And he killed himself in a motor cycle “accident”.

The main thing that I personally don’t understand about their situation is how the 50000 USD that they "invested" is all or most of the money that they had. Even if they had not lost it to the scam, how were they hoping to sustain themselves in Russia in the long term? They have mentioned that they had plans to start a business selling some food products, don’t remember what exactly it was, but if they just automatically assumed that this business endeavour would work out and would almost instantly be able to generate enough money for a family of 5, that is just extremely naive.
I think they decided to leave the US rather than decide what they will do in Russia. Many people are doing that now, it’s why I wanted to highlight this. It highlights the need to come to Russia with a concrete plan. Russia can be brutal and with no experience and language skills, it is extremely difficult. But free healthcare right? No 7 hour wait times at emergencies triage, no doctors, months of treatment wait times. Do we have good roads? hahahahahahahahahahahaha
I learned when I was young almost everyone will scam you if they can. I learned this from a mechanic who tried to get more money out of me for a simple repair. Now I am much more skeptical of "honest" people. By the way, where is Milena's channel? I can't find her.

In every contract you have to ask (in writing) what is NOT included rather what is included. Whenever I buy a new car with manufacturer's warranty I alway ask the dealer to put in invoice everything what is not covered by warranty
Oh that was so painful to listen to. I am so sorry it happened to you. This is what occurs when a state is not powerful: crime flourishes, scams proliferate. I hope this behaviour is not as widespread now, 20 years later.
@@SamsRussianAdventures I have donated to your Texan friends. Feel so sorry for them. Thank you for spreading their story, hopefully, other people will be very careful.
We know you have about £9,000 as you told us when you wanted to buy that small house to do it up, so why not spend the money getting that barn house finished? 🤔
I am spending money to do it. I just spent £12,000 to buy the windows. I got them cheaper than standard because my friend builds houses. They wanted £20,000
We have so many different schemes setup related to fraud and theft we could have solved so many of society's problems but we have to learn the hard way. In general here in the USA we have to pay more and more for insurance and other services primarily because of fraud and misuse of the services.
Aussie families get scammed a lot from builders, with many of them going bankrupt and start again under a new name with families having no home to live in, and it's all above board with the builder getting away with it, more than most of the time.
In South-Africa we have a lot of job scams... Because the unemployment rate is extremely high (40% or something) - People in South Africa would be desperate. And these guys would set up an interview and everything, but then at the end comes the twist - Money for police clearance checks and medical (which the amounts are inflated) after which you'll just never hear from these lot again... Very cruel...
Scamming doesn't really have a country of origin. I mean it can happen to anyone, anywhere. I've got scammed multiple times in my life -by people and companies in my own country, despite me knowing my country and my language, and even a lot of the law. I've also been scammed by foreign companies. This is how life is, unfortunately. Btw, looking at your house - ain't you going to at least try to place windows and door on it, to seal it and conserve it, so to speak, for the time when you will be able to finish it and move in?
I'm guessing your car had a tracker, how did they find it just after the policy expired? Trackers just make it easier for thieves to find your car if they have a contact in the tracking company.

I'd also like to see the details of criminal case, because knowing this character, I think it was 5 months after his policy expired, not 5 minutes.

you can't avoid every possible scam in this world, even if you know people, the law, and what not.
That's absolute criminal, but then again thats normal for Canada.

I don’t know these people, I just found about them a week ago, but I want to try and help them. Yes, we have car insurance and tax.

The behavior of local taxi drivers is a good measure of your risk.
So many times have I sat in a taxi and watched the price increase and hope that I’ll have enough money

In my trade of residential preparation dirt work here in Arkansas, USA (and it happens everywhere) a low life contractor will underbid all others only to tell the customer 3/4 way through the job, 'Ooops...need more money to finish' thus costing the customer more than if they had taken an honest bid to begin with. No one will touch such a job, after the fact, as all the money has been spent and now the cust. is desperate and NO WAY would another contractor come behind another not knowing what has been done and give a guarantee so, tough luck. In your case, it should be, up front, 'cost plus" and avert the shenanigans.
Very good advice especially regarding the GUARANTEE which is very important in home construction in the US
The main thing that I personally don’t understand about their situation is how the 50000 USD that they "invested" is all or most of the money that they had.
I had a good chat with them and we discussed some ideas that they have. We need to try and reinstate their faith in humanity and get them to a place where they can think clearly and move forward.

Sam, what are your thoughts on the two cases that have happened to this family: first, a financial scam, and second, the 'farm' accommodation involving 'forced' labour in exchange for registration (such a Russian trait) - was it the same person, Joseph (the Expat American)?
It highlights the need to come to Russia with a concrete plan. Russia can be brutal and with no experience and language skills, it is extremely difficult. One particular channel shows that life in Russia is really easy and that everyone is going out of their way to help you, I think that this is misleading and many people will come to Russia and expect it to be so easy. Immigration lawyers can only do so much for a person! Unfortunately they can’t hold your hand every day in Russia. 🇷🇺 Aa far as i understood, the lawyers did what they were hired for and even arranged asylum for the family.

Sam, Hi! Maybe i am wrong, but i got some worries about your house design: you made it from aerated concrete and made big windows. Aerated concrete is a very light material that crack easily. The wall over the windows isn't supported by almost anything. Yes they put some steel profile over the windows, buy i'm afraid this is not enough. My advice- hire some independent construction survey before continue.
This is the most popular building material in Russia and the house is guaranteed for 20 years

sam iv built houses in australia , and its better to when building a house to , have progress payments , the builder should fund his own business , not the customer , once the slabs down , you pay 1st progress payment the bank will check to see if the works been done correctly , with a building manager , from the bank side and is as on the house plans , that way if they want to reprice the job because the woods gone up in price then you can put a cluse in the contact you can walk away from the company , you need a fixed price building contract ,
I did all of that! The wood was the final thing they did!!! But I didn’t pay them for two years afterwards!!!
