5:23 If we talk about go as an act of communication between you and your opponent, when you play this elephant jump shape you are saying some sexy sweet nothings: this is like "come invade me bro, put-stick it right in the middle". Poetry.
Fun video! Here's why you're wrong: - The one point jump should be B tier. The cut defect is annoying when it comes up, you either have to spend time reading out variations that probably don't work or get surprised by the rare times when it does and suddenly your group is dead. People often jump out to the middle when they don't know what to do, it works ok but it's a lazy, often subpar option. - Kosumi should be A tier. Kosumi is an iconic shape because it symbolizes miai, which is a huge part of the game (and is often how beginners are taught about the concept), and it also has flexibility in terms of making shape/eyes, plus it fixes the defect in a one point jump. - Nobi should be B tier. It's fine, but it looks very plain. It's kinda cool when both players are extending and there's actually a lot of reading going on about when they can hane or tenuki, but visually it's just very unimpressive. - Would've liked to see the horse head shape in addition/instead of the dog head, love it as a light shape to get out quickly after invading. Dog head is just sad.
Shibano Toramru is your hero then. There is a game he played where he made an empty triangle killing entire corner. It's the best use of an empty triangle I've ever seen. You should look it up on to Dwyrins real board reviews. It's at an end of the game in the Japanese Joudan league.
I think the ladder is more of a formation instead of a singular shape. It's a strange distinction, but I think Nick is drawing the line at that. It would be like saying the avalanche joseki or the taisha joseki are shapes.
@@paysonfox88 Fair enough, but FWIW I was thinking the "shape" would be a stone captured in a ladder (or maybe a broken ladder), not the capturing sequence actually played out. BTW, Wikipedia, the arbiter of all truth and justice, lists the "Ladder Shape" as a go shape :) Anyway, I'm not upset about it, just surprised. It was still a great video!
All the local configurations in weichi represent varying balances between solidity and flexibility, between the solid and the fluid, the concrete and the amorphous. A loose configuration promises expansion potential, but can be harassed. A tight configuration promises ease of defense, but authentic cost of expansion potential.
Bamboo joint is also pretty good when played correctly, I don't think it should be 2 ranks below elephant jump...The value of it comes from it forming naturally while attacking/defending along the way, not intentionally playing it. If you intentionally play it to connect two groups, you can most likely just directly connect with 3 moves instead
I'd love it if you could do this with the sole criteria being how good they are to have in a game. Also, a lot of shapes are missing, like trumpet connection!
So the empty triangle is such stupendously horrible shape, it wraps right around infinity, coming back as S tier. Gotta admit it. Didn't see that coming!
Thanks, I needed this. Anyone know if there is a more comprehensive list somewhere online? I’m new to go, and not sure if a “go shape” is the same thing as a “joseki” but regardless, I’m hungry for more knowledge. Please and thank you ☺️
Not sure of any other tier lists, but (as far as I'm aware) shape refers to the configuration of stones, whereas joseki refers to a sequence of moves. More narrowly, joseki are lines of play that arise commonly because they are optimal for setting up certain goals. They kind of communicate each player's intentions to the other. Of course, you don't have to play them, but it's like how opening lines in chess all have their own special names (queen's gambit, Sicilian defence, etc.) because the opening has been worked out so much historically, and it's only later in the game that individual variations start to dominate.
I understand that empty triangle is the right shape in certain circumstances, but can't agree with its lofty place in the Supernatural group. It's a diagonal ( C-class move, with an extra stone). But yeah, sometimes it is correct.
Hey Nick, I very much appreciate your content, especially the making good shapes series recently. I don't know if you've noticed this, but with the way you have your mic set up and how close you are to it, we hear... everything: breathing, mouth movements, etc. It's pretty off putting, at least to me. Maybe you could play around with things and see if you can record just your voice?
... very good video. Didn't see the empty triangle coming. But then you have to include the dumpling shape somewhat higher, when it comes to life and death problems. Speaking of which: what about the dog-leg under the stones ahape?
You can't have positive numbers without negative? Ok.... Btw. if you are looking for ideas, I've watch some of your older videos 7+ years, maybe do a reaction to a few fragments, go has changed so much in this time, also you're stronger. For example I've seen you tell people that the moment someone invades fuseki ends, and today san-san as a 5th move is something so common.
Fun video, but in go it is always difficult to come up with generalities, for instance dango is bad, except when it is good like in Ishi no shita (under the stones)...
lol so appropriate that the shape I thought was so much something upon which my eyes light up when I can make them turns out to be a c tier. Taht is how dum I am. I get all happy and feel safe when I see that I have a nice and safe bamboo joint. I get that false sense of security . . . meanwhile, my enemy is taking up the whole board. And I am sitting here sheltering behind my lone boo joint . . . yikes.
I would have thought this is about the effectiveness of the shapes but apparently it's just about personal preference and "sexiness". So this is just a joke video I guess?
It's a fun video but it's very far off real Go knowledge. I used to think of shapes myself as being abstract but they're in fact very hard to dissociate from the concrete situation. Shape is all about efficiency and the efficiency of stones depends on which other friendly or enemy stones are there. A tortoise shell could be a sign of overconcentration (if disposable stones are sacrificed) or it could be a sign of total victory (if vital cutting stones are captured). One thing I learnt by studying with AI is that I (and maybe others too) are somewhat hypnotized by bamboos or table shapes, while they often make for a slow connection and it's better to reinforce one of the connecting parts in a more profitable way. Bottom line: can't really discuss shapes in isolation.
You started with the bamboo joint and put it on C...Ahahaha and I gave a like it without watching the video, now you won a dislike 😂 That ruined the video for me.
come on....😥 in my opinion: empty triangle angle and elephant jump is trash. because its not effective and dirable at all. also i think A rank(other than elephant) is more convencing more effective than S rank u guys dont believe in this video. u have to study shapes and also follow ups of later movements...
If the mouth shape is the poster child of Go, then the empty triangle is the poster child of Stop.
the ancient game of no
@@heartache5742 I once wrote a terrible game AI called AlphaNo.

Right? Had no idea Nick was this filthy...
Find someone in your life who looks at you like nick looks at the elephant jump!
Sexytime
Lmao

You make a couple of good points....I'll make this video again in 2022 and reflect all the changes in the meta. ;-)
Nick, what is your secret to looking 25 years old for the last 10 years of your life?
Wine, Tea, and Sake!
Was just watching NSGL #88 all about Shape last night, so STOKED TO SEE THIS.
High quality content Nick, good shit.
Sometimes the best video ideas are for ones that people didn’t realize they wanted
>Elephant eye above ponnuki
I can hear the angry typing in the comments already
When someone can make the empty triangle work, that person must be a rather good player. Booh for missing out on the bomber shape! =)
Shibano Toramru is your hero then. There is a game he played where he made an empty triangle killing entire corner. It's the best use of an empty triangle I've ever seen. You should look it up on to Dwyrins real board reviews.

Ponnuki got robbed. Clear S-Tier.
Really good meme video, keep the Go content coming
Go shapes really are memes in the original sense of the word.
The empty triangle is a bad move except when it’s not. Which somehow seems to happen a lot :)
no b2 bomber, fake list
Funny ending! There is no light without the dark...
Loved the twist at the end, thank you for the fun video : )
This is the type of content that keeps me coming back
Very nice first minute introduction 🙂. Thank you for this good content. All the best for 2022!
The video I've been waiting all these years for
My only gripe, 4 stone dumpling should be higher because Nick love under the stone plays and that’s one of the two critical shapes for those plays
Haha, I looked at the comments and only saw yours after I gave my cent of opinion. I soo totally agree with you...
empty triangle being top of S-Tier has GOT to be rage bait
No ladder?! Ladders deserve S tier for sure!
I think the ladder is more of a formation instead of a singular shape. It's a strange distinction, but I think Nick is drawing the line at that. It would be like saying the avalanche joseki or the taisha joseki are shapes.

Pro Tier List?🤔🤔🧐🧐 Great video as always. Happy New Year!
the dumpling shape is an excellent shape - if used "under the stones".

Where can I learn Go in Los Angeles?
I didn't know I needed this in my life but I did
I'd love it if you could do this with the sole criteria being how good they are to have in a game. Also, a lot of shapes are missing, like trumpet connection!
Software? How'd you build this?
Nick: Makes the Diagnoal C-tier
Fujiwara no Sai: 😡
So the empty triangle is such stupendously horrible shape, it wraps right around infinity, coming back as S tier. Gotta admit it. Didn't see that coming!
Thank you for the content!
Next should be Joseki Tier list
This gave me a great idea for a shape lesson where I'm gonna rank these together with my student :p
This was great! Can you do a fuseki tier list next?

Bamboo joints at c tier is hilarious
how many layers of irony are we on when we put tigers mouth as worse than dango?
Very interesting ! Food for thoughts 🙂
4:17 could someone explain this shape
No horse head? Where would you rank that? Maybe better in the centre than along the side or from a corner.
It’s been a while since I could find someone to play go with.
Thanks nick!

Need a NSGL episode tier list next!

Tesujis are made from any shape (right)? I feel trolled by your ranking of the empty triangle. 😂
Can you create a "Go Openings Tier List"? 🙂
Play the empty triangle to assert dominance
Stay till the end!!!
I love this.
I think Ponnuki and Horse move are S-tier.
19:20 this is so funny
This is amazing hahaha
Haha! What a great idea!
I think this makes great content and gets the mind going, but its fundamentally an oversimplification 😂 fun to watch though
Where's B2 Bomber?
lol
just found ur yt channel
im new to go
but its hard to navigate ur channel for noob content 😕
playlists just semi helpful
I'm mainly watching this to find out what the names of all these shapes are :/
i thought your name was nick skibidi
I would have thought this is about the effectiveness of the shapes but apparently it's just about personal preference and "sexiness". So this is just a joke video I guess?
just like your comment i guess?
Well, sexiness does allude to effectiveness a little. At least I interpreted it that way.
wow tha contento we deserve

This ranking makes no sense lol..
Empty Triangle == Antihero == Batman
You started with the bamboo joint and put it on C...Ahahaha and I gave a like it without watching the video, now you won a dislike 😂 That ruined the video for me.
sorry .. but that is seems a kind of a bad kamasutra of GO .. the criteria are too loose or absent :) - not helpful
come on....😥 in my opinion:
empty triangle angle and elephant jump is trash. because its not effective and dirable at all.
also i think A rank(other than elephant) is more convencing more effective than S rank
u guys dont believe in this video. u have to study shapes and also follow ups of later movements...
