  • Practice tips for Danse Rustique by Squire
I should have mentioned that in the middle section, it can be helpful to practice with all separate bows at first, to avoid having to deal with the long slurs while getting to know the notes.

She may no longer post on UA-cam, but her videos keep educating in a professional yet playful way. Whenever I learn a new piece I check if she posted something about it. I hope she realizes what a a wonderful teacher she was, and still is through her UA-cam channel❤

    Abigail,
What a great job you do in explaining this piece! I am an adult cello enthusiast who started playing cello as a hobby after my retirement. I've always thought this piece should be played with a healthy infusion of rubato and personal gusto. Your approach is right in line with my thinking. Thanks for the super great tips!
    :)

You can use open strings if you want, it is just more “professional” to play using shifting :))

Sometimes the tone of the open strings is needed, most notably in Bach's cello suite.

It's rustic dance, open strings give the sound needed. Not 3rd/4th position A/D/G/C 1st or 4th finger, yes you get resonance from the string but it doesn't linger due to clipping the string for those high notes on A string
