  • In this video, we shall talk about DEXA Scan & Visceral Fat. So let’s start by defining what is visceral fat VS subcutaneous fat.
    For most people who come to Bodyscan, getting in shape means reducing the amount of body fat that sits just underneath the skin. This fat is called ‘subcutaneous fat’. It’s the fat you can pinch and, as it increases, it’s the fat that stops us from fitting into our clothes.
    Visceral Fat Explained: There is another type of fat that we can’t see, that sits inside our abdominal cavity around our vital organs. This is what is called Visceral Fat, or ‘bad fat’.
    Visceral Fat Consequences: It’s called bad fat because, unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat acts more like an organ itself, releasing hormones and inflammatory chemicals into the body in close proximity to your liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
    Too much visceral fat has been shown to increase your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as type-2 diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer, stroke, and even dementia. Some research shows that visceral fat can also affect your levels of hunger and your mood.
    Because you can’t see visceral fat and because the consequences of it are serious, it’s well worth having a DEXA scan to understand your level of internal fat and hence the risk of developing some quite nasty diseases.
    DEXA Scan & Visceral Fat: By using a very low dose of X-ray, a DEXA scan can see what’s going on on the inside. Compare that to skinfold calipers that can only ever measure your subcutaneous fat.
    How to calculate Visceral Fat - Three Medical Thresholds: There are three medical thresholds that apply to the visceral fat reading on your DEXA report:
    a) Below 100 is classified as “normal”
    b) Between 100-160 puts you at “increased risk”
    c) Above 160 is classed as “high risk”.

    I’m Indian, age- 31, 5.11”, 142.4 lbs. just did my DEXA today, visceral fat is at zero. Total body subcutaneous fat is at 13.2%. Been naturally lean all my life. I also like to stay active, hit the gym a couple days a week, run and bike whenever I get time.

    I recently got a dexa after a year of diet that reduced my weight by 35kg and fat percentage to about 19%, but visceral fat was at 140 so still high. I don't know what was the starting point but was surprised because I do all those things like losing weight and exercise, but maybe the only improvable part is sleep

      Hi. Did you have your scan at Bodyscan? Certainly your visceral fat would have fallen substantially with a 35kg reduction in body fat. You can drop an email to us at info@bodyscanuk.com and we can discuss. Exercise is good for reducing visceral fat, which is also affected by age, sex, ethnicity (higher in males, older people and South Asians) and your unique fat distribution. If you carry a lot of your fat in the upper body then that will lead to higher visceral fat than is typical.

    Ugh, it really is larger in South Asians. It would explain why my body fat percentage is supposedly 20%, but my protruding belly extends far past what you'd normally expect from someone with that percentage. Working hard to get it down, but it's incredibly difficult. =/ I'm definitely doing a dexa scan to get some accurate readings.

    Great presentation. I don't like getting scanned, Can the scan be limited to just my abdominal area? if I request it? Also - do have an opinion on Bello 2? Have one and despite losing weight , and being extremely motivated with diet , exercise- and losing weight the visceral fat reading still reads 5.8- how does that translate on the scale you use. My waist is down from 40" to 38". Goal is to reverse diabetes . All the above being said- I already know the answer- I need to lose 7 more pounds, 185lbs down from 195Lb now 6' . Thanks Don

      Hi Don. Your comment under the safety video says you don't like getting scanned because of the radiation dose. But as I say in that video, the dose is tiny, less than a day's normal background radiation. In other words you're having the equivalent of about 400 DEXA scans every year anyway! I don't know anything about the Bello 2, sorry. Your visceral fat is generally related to your waist size. If your waist is 38", I would suggest you have quite a bit more than seven pounds to lose. No, we cannot scan just the abdominal area, the DEXA unit scans three times along the length of the body (right, centre, then left). Even if it were possible, frankly it would be a waste because the full scan provides a wealth of other information about body composition. Thanks for your positive feedback on the videos!

    Okay, my situation is that I have Poly Cystic Kidney disease. I have been unable to lose weight but all of my clothes hang off my body . Will your scanner show how big my demons are ? Because, no doctor in this state has allowed me to see any of my scans in almost 3 years..

      Hi. In our experience, we are not aware of any UK insurance company covering DEXA scans.

      If you have an opportunity to have an FSA (federal Savings account) you can use your FSA dollars in many places in the US.

    What is the unit you use for VAT, grams? Or is it normalized to height like BMI?

    • @Bodyscan
      @Bodyscan  15 днів тому

      There are three units for visceral fat - mass (in grams), volume and area. While mass is the most logical, we use area as the standard metric, as the values themselves are smaller than those for mass and volume and guidance thresholds have been placed on them (100 and 160cm^2).
      The unit is immaterial because the lower the better.

      I've had a scan in Denmark where they give VAT in grams. In my case it dropped from 400 grams to 220 grams in 5 months. I'd like to match that up with your benchmarks. I'm 188 cm tall.

    • @Bodyscan
      @Bodyscan  15 днів тому

      @@hanshurvig Unless the scan was done on a Hologic Discovery then there is no correlation. If it was, then 400g of visceral equates to about 83 for our metric. 220g equates to 46, which is pretty good. You lost 45% of visceral fat, which (I'm guessing) might have seen a 30% reduction in total fat mass (which is a lot for five months). That is NOT saying it might have dropped by 30 percentage points (eg, from 45% to 15% fat) but by 30% (eg, from 25kg to 17.5kg of fat). If you signficantly increased exercise over that period then the rate of fat loss may have been smaller. Just a guess!

      Thx a lot, I'll check the brand. My fat went from 19 kg to 12 kg, just as you estimated. I exercised and gained a bit of appendicular lean mass.

    100? 160? What are the units? Not tons I assume...

      The DEXA scan measures a sliver of internal fat in the abdominal area and gives this result in mass, volume and area. The thresholds have been applied to the area metric.
