I appreciate the effort. But I don't think that we have to have equivalent words for our own dishes. If പുട്ട് is a unique Kerala food, then it deserves to be called as പുട്ട് by the whole world.
This channel is really awesome. I am a regular viewer of this. I have a genuine request. It would be nice if you try to pronounce the malayalam words properly...im not referring about the Kannur, malabar or thrissur accents..for example .it's not kadla curry..it is kadala curry....
My favorite breakfast dish is iddli vada and uppumavu. All my notions about this changed when once I went to Mangalore for a medical check up. I arrived there a little early and decided to have my breakfast at a restaurant near KSRTC MLR in Bijai. I walked into a restaurant nearby and just outside the bus stand. Oh my God. I had never had such a great brakfast in my life. The uppumavu was uppittu in Karnataka and the iddly vada was totally different from that available in Kerala. You know what, after that I used to travel all the way from Kasaragod to Mangalore only for devouring this favorite breakfast of mine at this restaurant. Another thing I would like to mention here is that for a long time I used to pronounce the word BREAKFAST as ബ്രെയ്ക്ഫാസ്റ്റ്. But as I learnt it later, it is pronounced as ബ്രെക്ഫസ്റ്റ്.
നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം വിഭവങ്ങൾ ആ പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതല്ലേ അതിന്റെ ശരി.. Pizza burger ഒക്കെ അതു പോലെ തന്നെ അല്ലേ എല്ലായിടത്തും പറയുന്നത്. പിന്നെന്തിന് നമ്മുടെ വിഭവങ്ങൾക്ക് alternate പേര് ഇടുന്നു?
I don't think there is any need to translate the names of region specific dishes like 'puttu' and 'dosa'... Food items around the world maintain their indigenous identity ... instead, if somebody asks what a dosa is, then it is fine to explain that it is a South Indian dish that may be similar to a savoury crepe!

Why do we have to anglicize everything. Some of these are proper names. Why do we have to translate 'Puttu', Idiyappam, Vellayappam etc. Why didn't the Japanese coin an English word for 'Sushi'? What about Italian- Pasta, Pizza, and Vermicelli? French- Crêpe and Croissant? Everyone in the world is ready to use these original names. How can we let the world understand our culinary culture if we are going to use these fancy names. I think it would be better If we can use the word Kanji...than using Congee which defined as an asian food. BTW Chinese Congee is totally different from our Kerala Kanji. It felt like " My name is Karthiyayani Amma", and in English, it is Margaret Atwood.

A small doubt.. Isn't Kanji wrong for കഞ്ഞി? kanji is a system of Japanese writing using Chinese characters, used primarily for content words. The proper word for കഞ്ഞി is Congee/conjee ie, rice porridge. I have confirmed it from Merriam webster dictionary.
What is the need of making equivalent names for puttu and pazhampori in english as these are unique food among malayalis. For eg : italian dish pizza is known by the same name in the whole world

There is no compulsory to use exact English words for traditional food of any particular region even in IELTS speaking section, you can say പുട്ട് as put in English also.
I do enjoy the contents of English house they're really informative.... But this video comes as an exception. My point is that why does our native dishes need a name in English where it really sounds in top of its crux as puttu, noolputtu, payasam, or whatever it may be. 😊
I appreciate the videos made by this team. However, this doesn't look like an ideal concept to share and encourage. Regional food or for that matter certain unique traditional names or terms should retain its regional names and no English words can actually replace the exact meaning or vice versa. These are times when even "Aiyo" is added to the English dictionary. Why to pronounce "Kanji" with the "j' sound if one is a Malayali? The foreigners use it because they might not be able to pronounce that typical sound. I think those are really unnecessary translations and we don't need to emulate those.
Why should we change the dishes' name into another language???? If the dishes belong to a particular place and the people had already named it in their mother tongue why should we change it?
