Welcome to Next of Ken and in this episode, we're counting down 21 Times "BoJack Horseman" Got Way Too Real. Brilliant, clever, realistic, and downright heartbreaking... these are the words we would use to describe the Netflix cartoon, "BoJack Horseman." Despite appearing as just another funny cartoon show, "BoJack" is so much more than what it seems. It paints a powerful portrait of what mental illnesses genuinely feel and look like and the damage they can cause to yourself and the ones you love. It's quite possibly one of the best shows to ever have existed. And some moments we just can't get over.
Which moment was the most heartbreaking for you? Did we miss one? Let us know in the comments below!

The most depressing thing about this show is (despite how hard I try) none of my friends will ever give this show the time of day. I got ONE friend to watch it and he said it was the best show he’d ever seen

    • @blipster0074

Tits McGee the thing is, not everyone will immediately dive into the show binge-watching it. I showed my best friend a clip from season 2 (#11 from the video) and she really admired the realness it conveyed, just 1 short clip from the entire show. Apparently so real, that she's kinda afraid she couldn't handle watching the whole episode, let alone the whole show. So really, it just depends on how your friends would react while watching, it might put off some people because they couldn't handle the hard truths from the show really well

When it first came out I watched a few episodes and it wasn't my thing. A few months later I decided to give it another shot after my cousin recommended it, and watched a little further. I was hooked. I think if you can get a friend to watch through episode 12 they won't be able to stop. If they don't feel something when Bojack begs Diane to tell him he's a good person, they're missing something fundamentally human

Late response, but what effect do you feel it had on you while you watched it going through that? Did it make what you were feeling worse? Better? My girlfriend is apprehensive to watch this show because of how real it can be so I'm curious to know your perspective

    • @SahnigReingeloetet
      @SahnigReingeloetet Рік тому +5

@@Tyler-sf4kv it‘s complicated… while it was a respite to be able to empathize with someone (be it a fictional character or not) again after a long time of feeling isolated emotionally, I think it‘s a dangerous pitfall to romanticize depression. While the show doesn‘t do this, Bojack likes to pity himself and that could in turn lead to mirroring that behavior. Actually for me that led to quite the opposite. Seeing his self destructive behavior play out on screen right in front of me made me aware of my own self destructive tendencies (which at that time were very similar to his, constant self loathing, substance abuse, pushing people you care about away for no reason, not letting yourself be happy, etc.). The show in a sense put up a mirror in front of me and said „doesn‘t look good, right?“. Well, I was already aware of that but the show made it clear to me that that’s not how you should treat yourself. To quote my dad: „be your own best friend“. Now to say that the show realistically helped me would be disingenuous. Time, care, therapy, and a little bit of medication here and there. That‘s what helped me. But the show felt very real to me and I took it very seriously. So I‘d say it nudged me in the right direction. But if I watched the show maybe a year or so prior it‘s very likely I would not have been able to benefit from it. You could say it came into my life at the right time when I needed it.
The show is depressing and feels almost uncanny at times with how… real everyone feels in a cartoon about a talking horse. Overall I‘d say if it‘s uncomfortable for her to watch that‘s understandable, it‘s not everybody’s cup of tea and the show suits itself terribly for escapism. But it makes up for that with god tier writing, depth, and substance.
      Sorry for being so rambly.
Tl;dr: it hit close to home. It was less of a therapeutic experience and more of a painful learning experience. Good show.

I know it was too real a moment but that would've been obvious or an easy choice. With that being said, there were multiple moments that would've been overshadowed by Sarah Lynn's death. If this was made recently, the ending for Season 5 or that episode where he's talking about his mom at that funeral home could've made it to this list.

I mean it didnt hit me, maybe its becouse i saw it coming, i mean i was sure it cant end good, there was few deaths before. I figured out that nothing can happen to bojack so it will be something with sara.
But still it didnt got to me, and everywhere i see people talking how sad that scene was, i feel actually empty when i see it xD

My theory is that you cant actually put this much realness in a live action show. It would offset people who only want happy shows or drama and people lose interest or start to hate the realness. It is easier to just put it in a cartoon then people can just be like oh look bright colours its just a cartoon. People all wish deep down for the sitcom style show of everything is solved in 30 mins.

For example, when Princess Caroline's phone reminds her that it's her birthday and that she's 40. That was probably the first time I just sat there in pure awe at this show. What about the moment when she and Ralph break up? The part where Sara Lyn dies? Any time there is someone in the show who drops an F-bomb, that's a "too-real" moment too. What makes this show really unique is that it makes it so relatable to both people who like and don't like the show. For example, us, the fans, like the show because Bojack is flawed and has problems in his life just like us. For the people who don't like the show, it's because they don't like being reminded of the negatively relatable things in their lives whenever they see the show and see Bojack's problems are very much like their own. No matter who watches it, the show gets very relatable, and that's exactly what the creators and writers of Bojack Horseman expected.

While Bojack is about mental illness, drug addiction, cult of personality, and selfish nihilism it's often lost on fans that bojack is the personification of the show biz life. The good intentions, naivety, selling out, realizing you're not as successful as others, neurotic self obsession, a love/hate relationship with fame and the disconnect between who you are as a person and who you are as an actor playing a role.
And furthermore Bojack has tons of uplifting moments that balance out the depressive stuff.
Good lord I could write so many essays on this wonderful and complex exploration of the human condition and how different personalities deal with it.
