H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 201 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be number 291). These episodes were taped on May 29, 1977, and originally aired in early July of 1977. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this time they're joined by these three familiar faces: ~~~After three weeks away, semi-regular Patti Deutsch returns for her 32nd week of 42. Patti is one of 20 celebs who currently have exactly one head-to-head match under their belt (Patti has only played two H/H questions). ~~~Debralee Scott takes a seat at the panel for her fourth week (of 10 total). Debralee last visited in episodes 941-945 and has yet to be selected for a head-to-head question. ~~~Last but not least, Edward Asner appears for his fifth week (of 6 total). Edward last visited in episodes 876-880. He too has never been chosen for a H/H question. (Trivia: For Edward's final week - 1311-1315 - he'll fill the fifth seat, vacated by Richard's departure from the show.) Well, King Richard ruled the H/H roost again last week, answering 5 out of 6 questions. But unfortunately for the contestants' pocketbooks, he only matched once all week. Reviewing the past 56 weeks, Richard has played 238 times. Everyone else combined played 43 times. (Charles had 13 opportunities, Brett 11, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, and Trish Stewart 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an astounding *84.7%* of all the H/H questions over these past 56 weeks. As usual, I'm hoping for a little more variety in celebrities to play the H/H question, but however it turns out, it's always fun to crank up the time machine and set the dial for 1977. ~~~Today's action: We start the day with the second half of the tie-breaker. The champ only needs one match to win, and the question sounds pretty easy to me... In fact, she gets her match from Edward, but it looks like the entire panel had the same answer. And now to our champion's second Super-Match: *Today's (first) audience match question: "Poly-**________** "* (My thoughts: Grip, -anna, Unsaturated, Wanna Cracker*) *I meant that as a joke, but later Richard is heard saying the same line! The celebs: Richard (Ester), Brett (Graph, plus she threw in "Anna"), Charles (Unsaturated) The choice: Ester (The audience is really groaning.) The answers: Ester, Graph, Unsaturated (Wow, kudos to Charles for getting the top answer in third position. In fact, the stars got the answers in inverse order today, with the first suggestion being the lowest, the second was the middle and the final suggestion was on top!) Well, our champion seems to be a creature of habit. She called on the same stars in the same order both times, and both times she took Richard's answer. Last time, she chose Richard for a chance to win $2,500, but they didn't match. Will she choose him again for a chance to win $1,000 now? Smart money says yes she will. Yes, she stays the course. This is King Richard's sixth consecutive play, and he's been chosen 124 of the past 136 times. (Charles answered three of the remaining questions, Fannie also took three, and Rosemary Forsyth, Nipsey Russell, Meg Bennett, Scoey Mitchell, Brett, and Trish Stewart got one each.) Stats: Richard has matched 76 of his 179 most recent attempts (42.5%), 59 of his last 136 attempts (43.4%), 39 of his last 86 attempts (45.3%), and 15 of his last 39 attempts (38.5%). His overall success rate is *41.8%* and this is his 657th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 66 attempts (50.0%), and Brett has matched 29 of her 69 attempts (42.0%). Patti has matched one of her two attempts. Debralee and Edward have so far never played a head-to-head question. *Today's H/H question: "_**_______** Jar"* (My first thought was "tip" jar, but that sounds too modern. Glass jar? Jam jar? Oh, I know: Cookie Jar! Now that I think about it, that seems like the most obvious answer.) Richard quickly writes a longish answer. "Cookie"? Debralee had a card (suggestion?) which she discarded as Richard filed his answer. "Mason," says our champ. (And the audience isn't impressed!) I had thought about that answer too, but discarded it without even putting it down. Once "Cookie" came to mind, nothing else sounded good. Wow! Richard wrote "Mason"! An awesome match today! Richard scores his 275th H/H match today. ~~~ A quick game spells defeat for our champion. She won two games and $1,550. *Today's (second) audience match question: "_**_______** Does It"* (My thoughts: Easy, Just a Dab, Everybody) The celebs: Richard (Easy), Brett (That), Patti (Duz) The choice: Easy The answers: Everybody, That, Easy Time's up! Stay tuned for our new champion's first H/H match tomorrow! ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. Additionally, these stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969.
When introduced Patty Deutch always looks at the camera deadpan like she doesnt even want to be there. I wonder why the producers dont tell her to try to at least look a little bit happy instead of so miserable. She does this at every show.
I was thinking too literally for the Godfather question. I was thinking of things that are harder to crush, like cantaloupes and pumpkins, but you don't find them too easily in Italy, LOL.
Doesn't that woman have 4 kids? I totally thought she was going to say COOKIE JAR. (And that Richard - usually picking up on contestants' introduction clues like occupations and so forth - would have followed suit.)
@@laurenewittmer2511 Yea, that was it (although I must say, he did better than the last time he was on. I didn't think he was EVER going to match. Then finally towards the end of the week, he got one)!
Gene can make fun of Italians and that's funny and even lovable but say anything about blacks and it's racist or make a joke about women and it's sexist

Love Gene's suit! Debra Lee was very cute!
When introduced Patty Deutch always looks at the camera deadpan like she doesnt even want to be there. I wonder why the producers dont tell her to try to at least look a little bit happy instead of so miserable. She does this at every show.
I agree, I don't find it amusing at all. I'd like to see a smile. 😊
@@beckydutra6543She brought that deadpan look over from Laugh In.
The deadpan look hasn’t aged well and Match Game aficionados usually are in agreement that it didn’t add to the show or go over well.
Ed Asner is not the first to write blank or a form of blank. Shelley Winters did it whenever she was on (73?).
Gene's right, they really forked up on the godfather question, I can't believe everyone didn't respond to the king kong question with soaking his feet
Good for Richard, he made the audience shut up.
Eye-winking camera switch to Charles at 3:26
Charles and Brett make me want to🤮🤮
Patty has beautiful hair bit her expression always looks like a sad blood hound.

Doesn't that woman have 4 kids? I totally thought she was going to say COOKIE JAR. (And that Richard - usually picking up on contestants' introduction clues like occupations and so forth - would have followed suit.)
I think she said she had 5 kids.
Is Ed Asner the single-most unmatching celebrity? Or Jimmie Walker.
@@aia1229 The difference is she often used her answer as a chance to be funny. Asner was just dense.
He matched with "Leg of LAMB"! 🤷♀️
@@laurenewittmer2511 Yea, that was it (although I must say, he did better than the last time he was on. I didn't think he was EVER going to match. Then finally towards the end of the week, he got one)!
Ed is, because Jimmy usually does better at matching the contestants
Dick Martin would have to be on that list.
I miss Earl and I think Gene does too.
Does Earl come back?
Gene again showing he doesn’t spend much time in Southern California. The 118…what’s that? The time? 😂😂😂
The chance of Gene getting to Ventura were about zero. It's not a tourist destination.
Apparently Gene would fly in for several shows at once, then immediately go back to the East coast. In other words, he didn’t live in California.
After the Fireside chat she threw the CABINET into the fire.
I'm surprised no one said, "Poly-Grip".
I was really out in left field with polyglot and polyamorous.
Chuck seems to hate his life
I think Ed Asner didn't want to be there.
Yeah that's a strange one. His lousy answers and grouchy personality were disappointing. I guess he felt it was a waste of time being on a game show.
He never does
Well, nobody FORCED him to be there
He was on the show several times and always had that grumpy attitude whenever he appeared.
@@kristabrewer6736 It's possible he was forced to be there to promote the Mary Tyler Moore Show another CBS property.
Patti at least tried when it mattered, Ed just never tried at all.
Interesting fact: Ed Asner is the only celebrity on the panel that is still alive.
And, he's one of the worst players ever. He's really bad at it.
Not any more sadly, passed away this august.
It's ghoulish to bring up factoids like that.
Nobody said Poly Grip??
Gene can make fun of Italians and that's funny and even lovable but say anything about blacks and it's racist or make a joke about women and it's sexist
Typical left wing Hollywood Democrat.
Who?
Gene usually jokes about anyone & everyone on the show (celebrities & contestants) know that he is

Yes. Coming at #1005.
Funny, isn't there about the same panel as the first school riot in MG74?
@@sdlively27 you have a good memory.

Aww why did Patty Deutch often look at the camera sad-ish? Was she being funny?
God bless her
That was her hook on Laugh-In. Just like how Goldie Hawn was always wearing a bikini and her body was painted with 60s pop art symbols.
yes
Maybe she thought she was being funny, but it got really old since she did it all the time.
@@haverhilltablet6169, YES, I agree! 💯
