How to start EASILY a diesel engine car in cold weather

- Try this simple trick in cold weather to start your diesel car easier:
1.Make sure all of your accessories are turned off(air conditioning, blowers, radio, lights, etc.)
2.Turn the key to the RUN position and wait 5-10 seconds (30 seconds for very cold weather and weak battery)
3.Return the key to the OFF position
4.Repeat steps 2-3 a couple of times
5.The last time wait a couple more seconds and then try to start the car
The "science" behind this trick is that glow plugs only work for 5-10 seconds and by doing it multiple times you manage to pre-heat combustion chamber better. The last time you want to wait a bit more because while your glow plugs are working the voltage of your car battery is dropping and when the glow plug relay switch them off the voltage starts to rise again.
Car used in the video is Peugeot 307 2.0 HDi 90HP

I've often done the same thing for some years during winter. It does need the battery to be in good condition and properly charged as well.
Me, who has never driven a diesel: *Hmm, interesting*
Your a diesel, the absolute worst.
This is how people start their cars in the old days.
Maaaan you saved me!!! Thanks allot! It worked on the first try… I forgot to plug my f 250 in and it dint want to start until this simple truck.
An explanation is needed. What the turning ON and OFF, and again , again of the glow plug does is heat the air inside the chamber of the cylinder. If the heated air is really hot, the starter will have a ln easy time turning the engine. The glow plugs require a full charged battery.
Honestly really helpful, thank you! 😍
Glad it was helpful!
Just tried it. Definitely works. Thank you.
I have a 98 chevy 3500 diesel flatbed for my pallet bizz and my truck has been having problems starting in the morning…I thought it was because I park it on a hill…but ill have to try this method when starting it…Thank You!
Phew, so simple so obvious. After watching your video! Thanks so much. I'll tell the wife I thought up this magic solution.
the logic behind this is to triple the heat time at glow plug. increasing the air temperature inside the engine cylinder
THAT'S A LOT EASIER THAN THE LAST VIDEO i WATCHED.
Wouldn't it also help to put the transmition in free position? Then the engine can like run without much resistance for a while
If you hold the clutch then it's the same
OR let the glowplugs burn for 23-30s ... no need to wear out you ignition. :)
Thank you, you save my day
If your glowplugs works well you dont need to do this.
So glad I don't have a diesel. I did have one once - one of the 6.2 GM diesels, and it was a BITCH to start in cold weather. Took at least five minutes, and it had two batteries. PITA. I'm sure modern light truck diesels are vastly improved.
I have the same 6.2 and it’s literally been the bane of my existence when the winter rolls in. I figured it must have been my starter, but after having it replaced, it looks like diesel engines just don’t like the winter.
This is genius, thanks!
Why 3-4times ???
Big help !
But will it harm the glow plugs somehow?
rip this morning -11*C freelander 2 2009 :D im beginner
Well I hope this works for a diesel motorhome cuz I'm getting one for off-grid....
you know the glow plugs stay on until engine operating temp reaches a specific temperature...
Thank you so much
good sharing your idea
You didint mention the glow plug symbol
Its represented with a spring shape on the dash on my pickup
As I said my day was saved
My car shakes & sounds like it going to die for the first 5 minutes in the cold
Is normal
what is the tempreture when you making this video ?
Nah, don't need to switch on and off the key. The glow plugs work even when the light switches off, it stays on for 15 20 seconds...
It depends on the model. The 307 manual says they stay on for 5-10 seconds, but actually I have found out that in warmer days the glow plugs work for about 3-5 seconds, in really cold days they stay on for about 25 seconds before switching off. But with old weak battery I had to do multiple preheats no matter if it is 10°C or -20°C, just had to wait to hear the glow plug relay to click off.
@@electronflow2716 it wasnt a glow plug relay, it was a fuel pomp that failed.
Well come show me now then its fucking - 30c outside and my car wont start
Btw my car started after turning it on and off couple times 🙄🤓
Is this going to work in -15 C (5 F)?
I have a different issue with my 2011 e class coupe diesel. It starts fine but when I put into gear and try to pull away, it cuts out. I have to let it idle for a few minutes then it's fine but this is bull shit....😢
Mans cold lol
.... every body knows that
i have a chrysler voyager 2.8 i do that 25 times... but not working. when i put hot water on the motor in that time its working. :((((( i know my motor is died soon.
Sorry to hear. It may not work if you have bad starter, bad diesel fuel, bad fuel pump, bad glow plug relay, more than 2 bad glow plugs or too weak battery. That was the only way I could start my 95 ford escort 1.8td in the winter with an 8 year old battery
I have same car as you friend.
Funny how we both are at this video.
I hate cold mornings.
Can this trick work in -30
Not really
I'll test this in -40 tmr on my VW TDI, nothing works, every winter same thing.
Hahaha! I have the same problem with my 06 golf tdi. It’s -21 right now I can’t get it too start no matter what
In Russia, car starts YOU! ;oP
In ruzzia you attack your neighbor and occupy his house, and claim that there was never any neighbor and that it was always your house.
@@Mr.Monta77 LOLSKI!
Is it bad for car?
I don't think it is. I even think it's better for your starter motor because it shortens the time it is engaged.
@@electronflow2716 thank you
Only for glow plugs.
This will kill the battery is not very healthy.
No need to repeat, the glow plugs works waaaay after you start the engine/rotate the key
Not if the battery is old like in my case, I'm surprised mine isn't fully dead because its from 2015 😂
@@philkasafir. brother change your battery goddamn
@@cuppenn I did, got a brand new one, still has the problem but it does start eventually. When its warm its fine
Is se hoga kya??
That does not work
Make sure all your glow plugs are working. My car didn't want to start in cold and it turned out that only 2 glow plugs worked. Also another tip, if you drive a manual transmission car, hold the clutch down and then try to start it. That way you seperate the transmission from engine and it is easier for the starter to turn over the engine.
doesn't work all the time
it will work all the time you must be patience and try aganin
