This knife is a nightmare. 1. Unnecessary plastic packaging around it impossible to remove - had to take the knife apart using an Allen Key to remove it. 2. The orange blade catch button at the front is useless. I was unable to get the knife to lock properly at all. Dreadful design. Sent straight back. The original Stanley knives are, and always will be, the best.
I needed a knife on a job and I got the fat Max with the red buttons, and the red button release was malfunctioning all day on me. as soon as I put any pressure on to some wood that I needed to cut into the blade will stick into the wood and come out of the knife. it's happening every time to me I'm going to have to take it apart and hopefully be able to bend something or file something to get it to work, but it messed up my day, I couldn't believe it
I love this tool. I have this one and the button on top is rubber now. Each feature was very easy to use. My hands are a little smaller and it fits well.
DO NOT BUY THIS KNIFE. As others have noted, if you are cutting heavier materials, even thick cardboard, the blade will randomly and suddenly pop out. Most of the time it stays in the material, but sometimes it flies through the air. Worse, more than once I have had it flip around so the back of the blade is firmly held in the material and the sharp edge facing out. It's only a matter of time before someone gets badly hurt and sues the heck out of Stanley.
Wish I had seen these comments before I bought it.

Yeah, the button was a downer on that Stanley - true, maybe it will break in some over time. That would be damn cool to get a sponsor like Stanley. If channel continues to grow, I could definitely see reaching out.

Dang it...we just bought this and it is horrible.
Tried to replace the blade. Would not work. I remembered replacing the blade once (I must have got lucky.) It's now in the garbage can.
I bought this from Amazon, I just tried to put the blade in, and now it's stuck. Do you have any ideas on how to get it out???
This knife sucks. I just bought it and the retractable knob is stuck. Also, the screws used to hold the knife together is a very odd shape. I don't know if I have a tool to open this knife up.
My one will not open when I press the red buttons so I can't get the blades out at all.

How did you get the packaging off? It's hook in. Did you take it apart?
You need to undo the knife using an Allen Key which is NOT supplied (both Allen Key screws hold it in). Dreadful design all of it.
Unbelievable what a roll of that knife in your hand... can you please hold this knife still for 5 minutes in your hand so that we can look at it in peace. It just made me dizzy
DO NOT BUY...I inserted new blade and it jammed inside. There is a itsy bitsy tip of the blade sticking out and no amount of pressing the red button or the black in/out button will release it. This is the second time I've replaced the blade and the same thing happened. I had to wait for my son who lives out of town to get it to release and get the new blade positioned again. As I said this is the second time this has happened and so I am buying a new utility knife and throwing this one away. What a waste of money but especially a waste of time.😆😲🥴
One of the worst designs, however saying that after about 20mins of frustration I opted to very slightly bend the centre bit that engages the slots on the blade and bingo, it all works great now and extraction and insertion is a breeze. I'm not won on it yet but it might grow on me🙄
PS the red button has to be pushed to allow the blade to latch
Wish i had seen this before i bought. The red button at front is really poor.

100% agree. I've already returned mine. Dreadful knife with poor locking mechanism for the blade. Tiny bit of orange plastic!
Worst tool I have ever bought. Impossible to properly fixate blade. When some pressure is applied on the knife the blade moves into the housing. Contacted Stanley customer service about this, which replied they never heard of any complaints.
tried it on some bad grass.......blade fell off!

Stanley Fat Max is poorly designed and a pain to operate. In fact, it is dangerous...easy to get slashed when it inevitably jams. Just a poorly designed tool with a lot of hype and marketing.
Don’t buy this knife. After getting the blade to lock into place, it popped back out while cutting up cardboard

That knife is junk. Its a wonder I didnt cut myself trying to load the blade. It never did load right. Complete junk.

I'm with ya guy's & gal's. This thing was on sale @ the local C&E store. It's totally a piece of 💩 & the owner of the store was a complete 💯 DICKHEAD!!! Stay with the Old but Good original. If it's not broken why bring out suck a Hazardous Knife. I'm thinking about a lawsuit after Slashing my hand trying to load it with a New Blade.
