Rythym is the most neglected essential thing for guitarists. Hands down. Thankfully, I walked into my guitar journey with it mastered already having been a drummer for years first.
When I first started playing guitar, my teacher wasn't very good at guitar, and I didn't know enough to know he wasn't good. He taught me pentatonic shapes, and then basically just tabbed songs out for me. However, he forced me to practice a good tremolo, and then translated that to great alternate picking. Starting with those two techniques made it so much easier for me to learn to play anything, and the theory knowledge and other techniques came along later.
to me, vibrato is the make or break technique, its the first thing I listen for in any player and bad/nervous vibrato can throw me offon in a matter of seconds.
yes, barre is the french versio of bar, they have the same meaning, but we use barre to not confuse with another musical use of the term bar, like in song structure. ("for how many bars should i play barre[d] chords?")
For people trying to learn basic improv. (I know this probably isn't the channel for this... whatever)... lol. Come up with 5 or so different noodles. Like.... lead types. How the notes are moved around. You should know how to know what key you're in. Then when you're doing improv you can have a couple of things to fall back on while you think of something else. P.S. Legato is S tier. Always.
Listen to the song “In The Name Of God”. Somewhere around the 9 min mark there is a crazy guitar and keyboard solo where Petrucci plays most of it legato.
I would put open chords and triads above barre chords because when your playing with a bassist or keyboard player you don’t always need the low notes, also, knowing open chords makes learning triads up the neck easier. But I would put palm muting in A or S tier because I use that in most styles. Playing Chet Atkins songs, playing country, funk, you’ll need palm muting in all that
So recently I have been down picking forever and I haven’t gotten into the habit of alternate picking HOWEVER recently the past 2 weeks I have forced my self to alt pick and my playing speed as shot up as well as my overal sound this video actually helped me….(I felt targeted when you said stop playing Metallica riffs LMFAO)
this channel is like the Andertons inverted and its killer. "Well oy lets have little play after I flip this little gadget and then you play.. and Ill turn the knobs.. and then and then... speaking of turning.. I was in the cah pahk the other day just popped in..." AHHHHHH!!!!
It still boggles my mind when people talk about learning "alternate picking", it's so basic for a long time I didn't understand what they were referring to.
You know it's interesting but this list actually makea a lot of sense in that if you don't learn S, you can't learn A, and so on. S tiers are the basics because you kinda just use them or else
Some people are just big babies about learning theory when it makes your life so much easier. Also volume swells are as important to some genres as palm muting and pinch harmonics.
Tbh theory is just a way to communicate about music, if you're composer or in a band that doesnt use sheet music then you don't need theory, but a good ear and knowledge how to play what you hear ( or imagine in your head ).
Nah Pinch Harmonics are pretty much all you need pinch early and pinch often and when in doubt pinch it out. Seriously though pretty much agree but the most important thing is to keep it fun, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t stretch your abilities to grow but if you are really struggling with something and have worked on it for most of your practice time in a given day, and you just aren’t getting it , stop go learn a new riff or jam on some familiar stuff to boost your confidence before you put the guitar down for the day. I promise you’ll be surprised how much easier the thing that was kicking your ass yesterday is to do twenty four hours later. Some people say it’s neural plasticity that your brain uses to learn something and even help muscle memory when in fact you’re not actually physically trying to perform whatever task it is guitar for instance. Whatever it is there’s something to it .
Open chords are actually more useful than barre chords for clean chord extensions. Like I can seamlessly add 7th, 9ths, 11ths, 4ths, etc., to basically any open chord without giving up anything, however adding notes to most barre chords requires a completely different finger position than what you're typically using for a barre chord. Like going from a Bm to a Bm9 is not at all seamless unless you plan ahead, whereas you can transition from a C to a Cmaj7, Cmaj9, Cadd4, Csus2, all very easily. You can also easily incorporate different techniques into open chords, like hammer on's and slides lend themselves to open chord playing. With open chords it feels as though you can fully express a chord in any niche interesting way, incorporating nearly limitless color, but with barre chords you only really have a handful of seamless options available without changing your finger position, which will be audible at basically every level of play from beginner to expert. I've been playing guitar for about 10 years at this point, I would say I'm happy with my ability, and I easily use open chords more than barre chords. I also use what would be considered "complex chords" more than barre chords, because typically you can use extensions similarly on complex chords. If I didn't put as much focus on open chords as I did, I genuinely don't think I would be as good as I am.
For me, alternate picking is S tier. It has to be, because rhythm is also S tier. They truly go hand in hand with on-beat and off-beat alt picking strokes. Also, it definitely has to be higher on the list than bending.
"Barre" is just French (barré) for "bar", and comes from exactly what you said, so it's fine to use "bar chords". Any time you can use an English spelling over a French spelling with minimal loss of understanding is a win.
the tapping thing is fair but its such a versatile technique if you actually use it outside of the straight 3 note boomer taps in solos😭😭 if you need to hit a note you cant reach with your left hand or if you dont have enough fingers or space on your left hand then just tap the note sob
"Guitar is not a very colorful instrument compared to like keys." Whoa, I'm gonna stop you right there. Guitar has direct access to the strings. That fact alone makes it miles more dynamic than a piano. I don't even feel I need any more to refute that. I mean, just the ability to use bending completely wrecks piano. I don't even have to mention harmonics, though I just did to make the point. Chiggiddy check yourself. Lol
i can fast alternate pick and economy a bit i always practice sweep but i feel i ll never get a good level speed to these i can sweep a bit but not at 6 strings yet
I’m so annoyed bc I was told not to economy pick and I had to learn alternate picking. I did economy picking naturally and intuitively and I didn’t even know it was an actual technique until now. So when I was told not to I just assumed it was a bad habit. Nope it’s a valid technique apparently. Ima fight someone. At least I know both now
how are open chords not essential. it makes up like a majority of basic guitar playing. you can play every song on the radio with open chords and a capo.
How are you going to put VIBRATO. One of the most emotional, inspiring and such unique technique that defines guitarist. BELOW BENDING and on B TIER?!??….vibrato literally adds soul to music and not just “color” it’s part of the entree. Like I can bet you that one of your favorite solos probably has vibrato in it. Also alternate picking at B?!?! Dude you’re off your rocker if that’s the case. Learning how to play alternate pick will literally push you past the realm of intermediate and beginner as using a technique like alt picking can help you not only play faster but also do runs that require lots of energy plus it sounds good and is not something that is easy. Masters of alt picking are people like Stevie Ray, John Pettruci, Eric Johnson I can go on.
The importance of which scales really depend on what you're playing, a death metal solo in pentatonic just doesn't work as good as one in harmonic minor or phrygian
The guitar is invented with playing open chords in mind lol. That's the reason the interval between the G en B string is a major third, not a perfect 4th (as is with the other strings). Not putting open chords in S tier discredited the whole video instantly
Wait what?? You forgot to say we're gonna go far. How are we supposed to get far without that??
no training wheels this time, we're on our own
Don’t worry. I’m sure he will remember for part 2.

i agree. i am going to put a bomb in his mailbox

same
rythym gives the feel of the song ! without it youre just playing shapes and notes and it sounds stale like it has no emotion
@@doinky4345wtf does stale and no emotion mean? Neither of those terms have a single fucking thing to do with music or the sound of music
judy don't said at the end of the video that im gonna go far, so i think it's time to give up
this has to be one of the few times ive actually seem judy play guitar, been watching for at least a year now
I really appreciate these tier list videos. It makes me feel like I’m not irrational for my opinions
you make me feel better about being stupid. thank you, uncle Judy😌
i was literally just trying to learn trust by megadeth right before i watched the video guess i’ll have to work on my pentatonic scale….
