The Air Nomad Genocide was a mass slaughter committed by the Fire Nation that resulted in the near eradication of the Air Nomads and the fauna that lived in the air temples. The only human survivor of the initial attack and its aftermath was Avatar Aang, who was ironically the prime target. The outrage over this cultural destruction compelled the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribe to take up arms and declare war on the Fire Nation, leading to the large-scale war that continued for one hundred years.

One of the things that amaze me, albeit being sad, is that Gyatso didn't go down without a FIGHT. The number of corpses around his body proved that he must have been a hell of an airbender.

@@lif3andthings763 Briefly, perhaps. Despite the undeniable power of the avatar state, Aang was still very unrealized at the time. Until he mastered other elements, the only elements of the avatar state that manifested in Aang was air and water. Water has the next closest affinity to him after air (being next in his cycle), so he most likely lucked out a bit there.
If anyone (or two...) could prove that Aang was still only one human even in avatar state, it was Azula. ...and Oozai, but yeah. Blindsiding, being outright overpowered, Aang's own terror, the reality of facing down days-worth of the fire nation army sent specifically to kill YOU ("Yeah, fuck you guys, but fuck THAT guy in particular!")... Plus, armies can stagger forces. Aang would still need to eat, sleep, breathe, all of which would be hard with fire nation elites bending comet-fueled fire down his throat consistently.
Plus, Sozin was knowlegable, tenacious, shrewed when it came to dealing with people in general and exterminating an ENTIRE nation. He would know how to handle Aang. Any victory Aang would claim at that time would have been unfortunately short-lived...
He, and their world, was actually better off with his strange twist of fate. He had the veil of anonymity on his side more times than not, and even people who knew about him either couldn't handle him well, or was not properly prepared/equipped to handle him before he became a fully realized avatar. Legend of Aang is such a cool story! ^///^

Sozin's genocide on the Air nomads because he knew the next avatar that could stop the Fire Nation would be an airbender reminds me of Lord Shen going out to exterminate all pandas, because he found out that the one who would defeat him would be a panda. Both sought to kill what would defeat them, both failed. One usually seals his fate on the road he takes to avoid it.

I tend to think that "Airbenders" did not all die with the Sozin's genocide.
We know that there were Air Nomads who left the air temples and had children with Earth Kingdom citizens (such as Avatar Kyoshi's Air Nomad mother).
Also, there were likely a few Air Nomads that went into hiding and did not fall for fire nation tricks that lead to their capture and murder. They likely stopped their air nomad traditions and married people from the Earth Kingdom.
I think those genes remained in the gene pool of the earth earth Kingdom citizens and when Harmonic Conversion occurred, those Earth Kingdom Non benders who had distant air nomad Ancestry had their dormant air bending abilities awakened.

I heard that the main reason why the Air Nomads has such a great bender to non-bender ratio was because most of them were already spiritual as fuck due to their nomadic upbringing.
I imagine that after 100 years of persecution and not being spiritual and living among people of your element it’s quite possible that the “bending gene” wouldn’t work well until the next “Spiritual Big Bang”.

From what I've heard, there were indeed survivors, but they were relentlessly and mercilessly tracked and hunted down by the Fire Nation. Though what you said makes sense: a few may have eluded that manhunt and intermarried with people from other nations (mainly Earth), abandoning their lifestyle and spirituality (especially in the Earth Kingdom, whose population is the least spiritual of all), and, therefore, causing their airbending to die (or become recessive) in their descendants.

How did Monk Gyatso wipe-out about a dozen firebenders, supercharged with Sozin's comet, before he died?
Here's my theory: Gyatso knew a secret "last resort" airbending move that Aang was never told about.
As they surrounded him, he sat quietly on the floor. Then, once they were close, he simply pushed all the air out of the room. He held the air out of the room long enough to suffocate all of them, and himself.
    Evidence for this:
•His clothing is unburnt, and there is no evidence fire bending was used near him. Why would they have fought/killed him without fire?
•Their bodies are lying piled up around him. If he killed them with airbending, they would have been thrown across the room.
•Aang, as a child, wouldn't have been taught this dark technique, so it makes sense that it's not referenced in the show
•We know this type of bending is possible (on a small scale at least) because Zaheer uses it to kill the Earth Queen.
Think about how those firebenders must have felt. Standing over a frail old monk, feeling indestructible from the the power of the comet. Then suddenly, Gyatso pushes his hands to the side, and there's a rush of noise, then utter silence. They realise they can't breathe. They try to use firebending to kill him before they suffocate, but without air, there can be no fire!
In one move Gyatso has gone out on his own terms, killed them all, and shown how the elements rely on each other, and the importance of balance.
    What do you think?

A, if an avatar is killed in the avatar state, the cycle is broken and there is no more avatar, so the firebenders would actually prioritize killing Aang as "only the avatar, master of all four elements could defeat the fire nation" -the introduction and B) the firebenders had no time to test allthe airbenders to see if they were the avatar, so they would've eradicated the waterbenders next, the element the next avatar would be born into, which they essentially did to the southern water tribe, but not the north
(They killed all the air nomads because all of the children were indeed airbenders due to their spirituality, but with the other elements)
      So....

Do you remember watching the show as a kid, and you don’t compute death with the absence of life, you just see it as just another characterization of someone or some thing that has reached the end of it’s life, you don’t see it as an egregious theft of spirit from someone and in this case, and unjust theft. I am 23, so I totally can lay claim to the group of kids that watched avatar when it first came out, but as a young adult, is watching it all over again and it’s full entirety, and to actually see it for what it is, it’s incredible that the creators of the show touched on such strong A strong theme, like genocide. Even in the past when you read the Wikipedia page, you don’t compute the actual background of the show, you still think of it as anger and Katara and psycho going through a journey together, the only thing that you can somewhat understand in terms of complex themes is Zuko‘s emotional and mental turmoil… But you never once think about that the show literally references World War II, and entire group of people being done away with. SOOOOOOMuch dynamic in the show!!!!

Tbh I used to be confused on how the Fire Nation beat everyone: Water extinguishes Fire, Air does the same thing, and Fire can’t hurt Earth in anyway...then I realized that Fire benders can summon their Fire 🔥 unlike the other elements Water needs its element nearby and the same thing goes for earth benders , with Air...I mean air is all around us unless the fire nation surrounded the air temple with fire eventually that’ll make it hard for them to breathe and MAYBE hard to bend air but I’m not sure cause I’m not an expert on it

Honestly I for some reason doubt Aang was the last airbender. Your telling me every airbender fell for that trick if they survived? My theory is since we know airbenders if they loose their spiritual their airbending becomes tainted (Kiyoshi's mom) maybe those who went into hiding, probably not masters as its hard to hide your tattoos just lost their spirits and over generations, considering is 20 - 30s years that means roughly 40 generations went by of people so first generation could have airbending but hid it second generation could have lost it or had it hidden, 3rd none and 4th none. Read a theory of Tia Lee been a grand daughter to air benders since her fighting style is light and nimble like I know fighting style isn't generic but still and I think I could make sense as she is a peaceful person and focuses on positivity and all that. If Tia Lee was alive around harmonic convergence in Korra's time I could see her becoming an airbender

Sozin probably killed them bc they wouldn’t tell him where the avatar was since nobody knew bc aang disappeared so they just went down defending their homes. I could imagine sozin being like “tell me who the avatar is or everyone dies” since aang is gone they decide to go down fighting in hopes aang is still out there somewhere. He knows by killing the avatar he would jus bc reborn he prolly wasn’t planning on doing a genocide but he felt the airbenders were hiding the avatar from him so he killed them all, he also knows ab the avatar state sine roku used it against him so that would be the distinguishing factor, but since none of the airbenders pulled out the avatar state he felt like the avatar was still out there and then targeted waterbenders since not everyone in the other nations are born a bender jus in case they did kill the avatar and he was reborn into the water tribe also so there would be barley anymore water benders to stop them in the war

Well there are ways that I can think off where vengeful people from the other nations could have done that. Maybe and Earthbender or Waterbender could seek out dark spirits to help them seek revenge. If Hama wasn't imprisoned and never met team Avatar and never revealed her bloodbending to them she could have committed genocide against the Fire Nation using her bloodbending in secret. Also in the Avatar world I think it was revealed that humans who have died can become spirits if they want to and as we have seen spirits can affect the mortal world. Which makes me wonder why no deceased airbenders killed in the genocide ever came back as spirits in order to seek revenge against the Fire Nation. Even the kindest people can become vengeful if pushed far enough. In the Fire Nation's past warlords took children from mothers and those mothers in their grief and sadness became spirits and terrorized those men I forget what they were called but Azula tried impersonating them when she stole Fire Nation children.

I am confused at the plan. When Roku dies Sozen knows there is a new avatar in the air nation. But if he kills the avatar there, another one will just be born in another nation. So he would have to capture the avatar and keep him as a prisoner for any long term effect. So killing everyone seems like a bad idea. Aang might not have known he was the avatar and couldn't bend other elements so there would not have been much to set him apart. If he had been present then he would likely have been killed rather than captured.

5 Reasons The Air Nomads Were Easily Wiped Out:
    1: They were pacifists.
2: They have no military to protect them from danger.
3: They were betrayed by one Air Nomad man named Afiko from the Southern Air Temple who revealed all the secret locations of all the Air Temples because he was jealous of Aang being the Avatar.
    4: They were ambushed.
5: The Imperialist Fire Nation army of firebenders had the advantage because of Sozin’s Comet which enhanced their firebending, they had technological powerful weapons, and they flew on dragons to reach all the Air Temples to cause mayhem.
(Very depressing, may they all rest in peace.)

Airbenders are tricky. The air nomads were all benders bc of their cultural connection to the element of air but like Avatar Kyoshi's mother it's possible that an airbender can lose their bending due to losing their way. Yet despite this, there also exist airbenders like Zaheer who are extremely violent and also follow the teachings of the airbending Guru Lahima and achieve great feats of airbending like flight. Is it possible that airbenders escaped the genocide but lost their bending? Or did descendants of air refugees survive in the Earth kingdom only to have airbending revived during Harmonic Convergence? Is airbending more about genetics or is it a cultural thing? Did Zaheer gain airbending bc of his observation of Guru Lahima's teachings? How much of either tied to it?

ATTENTION ALL AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER FANS!!! SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THIS TO ME!!!!
So I’ve always had the question (how exactly did sozin whip out the airnomads?) it was 100 years before the story took place meaning they didn’t have firenation War balloons or war ships, I don’t think they had tanks (and if they did somebody explain that to me) and I don’t see them using dragons considering dragon hunting was a thing so much so they pushed them to near extinction and the comet that boosts their fire bending only lasts a few hours as shown in the finally of Last Air Bender soooooooo I did some research, just a tad bit to see if my question was an easy google search and I see a blog that raised an even BIGGER question and that is “How exactly was Sozin’s plan supposed to work???” Even if he killed aang, aang couldn’t access the avatar state at will so more then likely the avatar would’ve just been reincarnated into the water tribe. If he did the same thing with the water tribe then the avatar would’ve been reincarnated into the earth kingdom. Then the firenation and then what??? He’s gonna kill his own people?? So what was he ultimately trying to achieve??? Basiclly what I’m trying to ask and wanna know the answer too is “WHAT WAS THE POINT OF SOZINS PLAN IF ON PAPER IT SHOULDN’T BE POSSIBLE AND EVEN IF IT WAS IT WOULD HAVE NEVER WORKED?”

You would think Sozin would have used it on the water bending tribes due to it being the opposite element of fire or use it againts the earth kingdom as there are many more of them and there is more land.
Due to Sozin and Roku being bff's for some time, you would think Roku would have told Sozin two critical pieces of information.
