I've got a 5MT Legacy GT Wagon as well. Things I don't like:
    1. The maintenance costs are ridiculous. Every sensor, wheel bearings, suspension bushings, turbos, the amount of oil it consumes from the factory (apparently 1 qt/1K miles is normal), they all break all the time for some reason. Rubber likes to wear out very quickly in these too. The downpipe is right next to the front CV boot so it wears that thing down in no time.
    2. The transmission feels alright but the dual mass flywheel is just terrible. DMFs have no right being in road cars. It makes the clutch engagement extremely difficult to master. You also have to throw out the flywheel every time you replace the clutch and my car has 204K on it, so that thing has to go yet again here. Probably going to do a swap with a regular single mass flywheel and clutch from an older WRX. Might improve the feel too since there isn't a ton, though it is better than newer cars that I've driven. But I've driven probably 30 or 40 different manual cars in my lifetime and the only ones that are more difficult than this car are the ones that have had huge cams like a drag set-up C5 Corvette I've driven as well as a Boss 302 Mustang.
    3. Yes, a sixth gear would be nice, but a good tuner can adjust timing and such to reduce fuel consumption at freeway speeds if you desire. My car gets better MPG at 70 MPH than it does at 60 and you can feel the slight pulling of timing at around 2800 RPM. Actually nice to have that.
    4. First to second is very, very tricky and around PDX where I live there are some hills you have to climb in first gear, but the car REFUSES to let you downshift to first gear, so you either have to stop all traffic behind you to get into first, or lug the engine like absolutely crazy in second at 10 MPH up some of these hills.
    5. I actually have no problem with this because I'm a skinny guy at 6 feet tall but anybody bigger than me would have a hard time fitting comfy and heel-toeing would be very hard with shoes bigger than my size 10.5s. The steering wheel is also barely adjustable so that can make fitment harder.
I still love this car and it makes lots of fun turbo noises, is fast, and very practical while looking great :) Just know what you're getting into buying one used.

      @avengednick  5 років тому

Nathan Young all good points! I’m right there with you though, despite some flaws I still love this car. Like you said it’s relatively fast, practical and good looking. Great daily

my only "hate" about this car is I didn't buy a LGT Wagon/Spec-B in 2005 when I was in Denver and I was looking at buying a car...Instead of getting a LGT wagon/Spec-B, NB Miata, RX-8, 9-3 Aero Sportcombi, or (Bug-eye) WRX...I ended up in a 1.8t GTI. The GTI wasn't horrible and I had the car for 15 years...but looking back now, I can only imagine how cool life would have been if I had gone with a LGT wagon or Spec-B.

I've got an 05 Legacy GT sedan. We're exhaust buddies! Same layout, I believe it's the same muffler as well. I couldn't agree more on the 6th speed. I've had a few road trips where I've had to cruise at 110+mph and it gets rough on a 5 speed. That V8-like rumble when you let off the gas at 110mph though...

I hate my 2005 LGT's numb, clueless clutch and lack of torque at low rpms. If I could feel the clutch better, I wouldn't have to over rev and burn said clutch in order to not kill the engine when
trying to start out smoothly from a standstill. I would have a better sense of what the clutch is doing. I compare it to my '87 535is. It does not compare in any way except to disappoint in every
    way, including pedal effort.
The lack of room for my size 13 shoes under the dash when working said clutch is alarming and dangerous. I hate that. My toe hangs up during spirited driving, exactly not the time when one
wants this to happen. Driver's position to the clutch sucks too, forcing me to sit much closer to the steering wheel than any sane person would ever wish to sit (except maybe Grandma),
especially in a fairly high performance vehicle. I am a recumbent sort of guy, arms straight at 10 and 2. My clutch foot should still go all the way to the floor. Very hard to do in the LGT without
    going " Full Granny".
I'm not a big guy, pretty average at 5'-8", at least average for a guy in his mid 60's. I have a 30" inseam. I mention this because it gives people of similar size a reference when considering an LGT. It also means I have experienced a whole lot of clutches in my lifetime. My 66 Nova wagon had a better position to clutch and better feel than this LGT. My Dad's VW Type 2's, '63 and '70, had
better feel and position to clutch. It would be a sick joke to compare this LGT clutch to my 78 Sirocco's.
I got the wagon because it is beautiful to behold, mine in a fiery orange-red. I have owned six wagons in my lifetime. This is the only one I ever had that goes like hell on fire on a frosty winter
morning, when the turbo really kicks ass. My LGT has a Cobb Stage 1 tune and sits on BBS 17" forged wheels that look a lot like the ones on this black wagon, but in silver. They are a little more
sensible in size for a dirt road country life such as mine. At $775/wheel, one better believe they are pretty, right? Pretty soon, the wheels will be worth more than the wagon.
My LGT's paint is still nearly flawless. Lucky, I guess.
6 gears would be sooooo nice. Top speed is definitely rpm limited (the power is there) and mpg could be better on long trips at 75 to 80 mph. Anything above 90 mph doesn't much interest me
any more, but I sure love the twisties. New springs and Bilsteins all around don't disappoint in that realm.
So Subaru, how come all my backplates are needing replacement at 73K miles? Shame on you for a shit finish on those deeply embedded parts. It will cost a fortune to replace them. All the
hubs will have to be pulled, suspension dismantled on all four corners. That was a POS move on your part.

Reading your comment made me smile and laugh at the same time. Being a service tech and driving all sorts of different cars myself, clutch feel stands out as one of the most important aspects that should be considered when manufacturing a vehicle, but it seems like car companies could care less. I too hate that darn clutch and the size of the footwell (I have a size 15 shoe). I wanted a fast Japanese car that I could enjoy on a daily basis, and Subaru was always at the top of my list. Eventually, I ended up settling for a 2008 Acura TL Type S, but for some reason I felt that I cheated myself. Sure I can stick 275/35R18 tires in the wheel wells on all four corners, sure I can cruise the highways in sixth gear, and sure I can enjoy a car with great steering and clutch feedback, but there's just something missing. Maybe it's the wagon factor, yearning to have room for more "activities." Or maybe it's the AWD that I miss.... Maybe it's the general understatement other people make in not knowing what the Legacy is all about. New cars are getting worse and worse as time goes on, so I might just jump into an 05-07 LGT Wagon one day.

I am not complaining about the fuel economy since full time awd and 275whp will get me that. I'd probably be swapping in a spec.B 6 speed trans since it's a direct bolt in and the 5th and 6th gear on that are a bit longer than the STI trans. But appreciate the info!

Average Bros Media sounds like you know what your doing! Just thought I'd pass that along as I had the same complaint about my 5 speed on the highway. I'd still take the 6 speed for the durability! It is nice though being right in the power no matter what gear you are in on highway.

The oem brakes on the legacy gt are the worst ive had in any car. There is like half inch before brakes apply. I had to add brembos and sti booster to make that car stop. The stupid S drive button sucks. Any small issue and the car is stuck in i mode. The car needs a solid tranny mount , if not shifter wobbles like crazy. I hate the stupid ac and radio was stuck together. No dask kit for car only custom. I had the legacy gt in the shop 48 times. Car always had a issue

Man this hit way too close to home! Haha the stock brakes really are trash, had to add Brembos and a master cylinder brace to get it where I was happy. Don’t event get me started on the stereo being connected to the HVAC... Aside from the underperforming or studious factory components, I’ve been fortunate not to have too many reliability issues. Despite all the things I’ve had to change on this car to make it perform how I want, I love it. I’m so deep down the rabbit hole now I figure I should just keep modding it. It would be hard to replace the car in its current state as far as something that looks and drives as good, oh and is a wagon.

ehhhh a downpipe changes the whole dynamic of the car, of course ull need to tune it. but i hear ya. the paint wise, im not sure. this car is made in america. the imprezas and forester of that same era made in japan, imo had better paint quality. my 2006 forester xt still shines like new. altho i have seen some GD imprezas that look like crap just beat up. so i guess it depends on how u take care of them.

    • @avengednick
      @avengednick  6 років тому

A downpipes may not have been the best example, but either way Subaru's are some of the most picky cars in terms of aftermarket parts being installed and needed to be tuned. That's interesting, most of the people I have talked to even with the cars you mentioned being made in Japan still have issues with bad quality paint that chips. Keeping it shiny is one thing and proper care definitely helps with that, but not so much for rock chips.

Hate nr.2: If you make one small change in an orchestra, it will sound terrible and not in harmony. Same goes with very good programming with engine management. If you make a change, you adjust accordingly. You are basically hating on your fine factory-tuned engine.
Hate nr.3: Maybe you should try and not drive so close behind other cars. Also; Subaru paint is not bad. Try any french, italian or cheap british cars and you'll see bad paint.
    Hate nr4.

I thought they were super reliable motors but now I'm not so sure. Subaru's are awesome and I really want one. Maybe you or somebody can shed some light on this. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Thanks dude, love hearing that! It's certainly not uncommon for these cars to have replaced motors, you'd definitely want to inquire why, but if everything that was potentially damaged in what caused the need for replacement was replaced on the rebuild and it was done so properly, it's not always a red flag. As for reliability, I wouldn't put it at the top of the list when it comes to reliability, simply because it is a turbo Subaru engine. That being said, proper maintenance does help a ton, I've had my car for going on 7 years and 40K miles and had no major issues (knock on wood). With these cars getting to be a bit older, they tend to have higher mileage, but if you are looking to pick one up, just make sure to have a proper pre-purchase inspection done. It won't be a guarantee of no issues down the line but it's great piece of mind for very little money.

Hey thanks for replying so quickly. That's great advice. I won't give up on them then just yet. I think the look of these cars is awesome and when all the mods are added both internally and externally, makes them even more appealing. Yours is looking fantastic and caught my eye as I was starting to research these on here. I have a lot to learn. Thanks again!

Mmagz6 of course, I try to respond to everyone. Definitely don’t give up, there is still good options when looking for these cars, you just have to be patient, and potentially be willing to travel or have the car shipped. Also check out LegacyGT.com for a ton of good information.

If your interested I am considering selling a completely rebuild motor and new oem turbo with only 3k miles on the motor and turbo 05 Outback XT. Same as a legacy gt but has fender flares stock and different front bumper. Is professionally tuned to 275whp.
