Loved your ideas for the unleashed remaster! I'd also add removing the box-carrying sections and making later enemies take no damage from the basic combo finishers to encourage use of advanced combos.

As someone who absolutely sucks at the Day stages, the night stages were a good opportunity to cool down a bit. I really had fun with them and I wish somehow they bring the Werehog back somehow. At least for like special stages. Storywhise they could do this through the bracelet of chip that gives him control over it or something like this.

I found it helps to treat the Day stages like a rhythm game, where you go through them at casual speeds a few times first to get familiar with the track layout, then once you've got a good grasp of the layout and timing, play them faster and faster to better feel like an absolutely stylish badass.

I always liked the werehog, same with treasure hunting, mechs, pretty much every "gimmick" except wisps. I think they all added a lot of fun variety to the game and I think it's unfair to criticize them solely because "grrr not fast."
The idea that Sonic gameplay needs to be exclusively about going fast constantly is how we ended up with Sonic Forces level design.

The wisps aren't all bad, but some are just too out of place or one shot. I want wisps like jade ghost and spike, which don't remove player control too much, but also let you set the speed. Now if they weren't in a boost formula game, say sa1, I'd probably be fine, it would fit the pacing better. But with that comes the question of why not just use other characters? Jade ghost is different enough to get a pass here, but hover and drill, you guys both suck in controlability, bad thing considering your almost exclusively used in platforming heavy areas, drill less so because it has it's own emptier areas, but like, tails flys better than hover and knuckles is more versatile than drill, and could benefit from the style, maybe except the doom countdown. As I said, jade ghost is so wildly different I can feel they're inclusion is worth it, but some wisps deserve to stay on their home planets unless we need a new mario ka- sonic racing game, almost fucked that up.

I’ve said this on another video about the werehog, but one thing I love about it is how it feels from a story perspective and making you feel how Sonic feels.
Think about it, Sonic is used to running super fast, bashing enemies in a single hit with his speed. He feels comfortable and in his element like this. You feel like this too while in the day stages. Free as the wind and powerful.
Now he is cursed and for half of every day he cannot use this speed. He now has to deal with the enemies head on and cannot run through things. It’s disorienting! During the night, Sonic is not in his element. He is trying to survive the night, and needs to start abandoning his preconceived ideas on how to do things and use the new powers he finds himself with. This is EXACTLY what the player is asked to do in the night stages as well.
It just adds a new level of connection between Sonic and player and I think that’s so cool.

My favorite part about the Werehog is its final boss, the Egg Dragoon.
Eggman spent decades working on it, carefully designing it to be the perfect counter to Sonic. It was built to combat something fragile, but fast and hard hitting. But in the end, the opponent he faces is slow, strong, and beefy. An immovable object, as opposed to an unstoppable force - the opposite of what the machine was designed to deal with - and it is easily destroyed by the werehog.
And the best part is, he did this to himself; He had transformed Sonic into this beast. He created the perfect opponent to himself.
(I also just think its cooler if sonic only won thanks to being the werehog, it’s just ironic and cool and awesome)

I love him due to how utterly ridiculous he is. Instead of playing into the common werewolf tropes Sonic remains perfectly sane, he just gets more irritable (I find the scenes where he loses his cool just very funny for whatever reason). Half his attacks aren't even using his claws, more often than not he's just lobbing punches with his stretchy spaghetti dough arms. Also Jason Griffith's voice for him is fantastic (especially knowing the backstory of how he got to make a voice that gruff) and prime meme material.

Here's 2 of my favorites: while running with the trigger pressed, jump and press triangle (y) in the air. With that you'll spin forward and hit all of the enemies right in front of you, also it's pretty fast.
Another one is to hold either square (X) or triangle (Y) down, then Werehog will start charging an attack, when ready just release the button. With square he'll do a spin that takes down any enemies around you, the other one literally destroys any enemy in front of you (this is the strongest attack of the game).

Alternatively to make enemies later in the game immune take no damage from the basic combos (to encourage players to use the more advanced combos). (Would've been nice to remove the slow box-carrying/pushing sections, as well as cutting the level length in half for an "easy mode")

He can be fast if you know how to use him correctly and one move that always helps out is Spinning Needle Attack, it's literally the Boost but built more for combat and not bound to a Ring Energy Gauge.

The werehog idea was an amazing way to freshen up the sonic games IMO. reminds me of Sonic and the Secret Rings when they went with a new super sonic idea (that was SPONTANEOUS for me as a sonic fan)

Sonic unleashed has to be my favorite sonic game ever it’s just so different, engaging and has amazing cutscenes and great music. I grew up with the some of the older sonic games like SA2 and sonic unleashed. Also I don’t know why but every time I play sonic unleashed I just find my self enjoying the werehogs combos so satisfying. Challenge yet rewarding game super underrated in my opinion should give a try.

The Werehog was actually the highlight for Sonic Unleashed when I played it all those years ago. I played Sonic Unleashed again a couple of months ago, and the Werehog is still so much fun to play as. Using different combos and seeing those fantastic animations and damage come out of them is still one the most satisfying things I've done in any video game.

I really appreciate the work you put into this video, thank you for that. I personally grew up with this game and it was the game that got me into the Sonic franchise. I really think the game doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Another reason why I like the Werehog a lot is because you can truly take the time to appreciate the beautiful level design instead of just speeding through it in the daytime levels. There namely was so much detail in every corner of the game. Keep up the good work! :)

Hey! this is a very nice video about the werehog! i really like how you went kinda in depth with his combat mechanics because this is the best combat in a sonic game i ever saw, yes is slow, yes is clunky, yes the aspect is totally bonkers and unnecessary but its a sonic game after all.

Having seen more hd gameplay, I would honestly say I think the wii version may be slightly better. It's just less frustrating in terms of progression. No medals or rather you get them based on rank. Linear upgrades which just streamlines the whole process. And each level has a more appropriate length. I want to get the ps3 version at some point to say I've played both.

personally, i always liked the werehog missions
they were a nice change of pace from the high-speed day sections, which usually were too fast for 8 year old me
plus, despite the lack of speed, the whole combo system and the puzzles coupled with the night time atmosphere made it feel a tad relaxing

If the Werehog gameplay and level stage took direct inspiration from Devil May Cry rather than God Of War, then I think it’d be more generally praised, especially when there’d otherwise be a pretty cool but surprisingly fitting contrast between the high-speed reaction-based action-platforming of the Daytime levels and the high-speed reaction-based hack-and-slash combat of the Nighttime levels.

I played the Wii version of Unleashed growing up, and younger me thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. And thanks to the Night stages in these games, they helped get me into games like Hyrule Warriors and the Bayonetta series.
Also, I kind of like to think that younger me felt like he was playing Wii Sports boxing when it came to the Night Stages' combat, which I weirdly loved. 😅

People complain about the gimmicks from the so-called Dark Era. Which is ironic since the Sonic series has been about moving forward. And that includes experimenting with the format more. And that includes the examples you brought up.

This was a very refreshing video.
I have always enjoyed the Unleashed for what it is, and I called the game underrated back in the day. About 4 years ago, though, I played the game again and my opinion of it skyrocketed, largely because of the things you say in this video. The Werehog has tons of combos and some of them can be used as movement options. Also, I allowed myself to explore the hub world and I found a lot of extra missions. These missions give you experience that you can spend on the werehog to make the game more fun. A lot of players also don't seem to know that you can spend your rings on food, which you can eat to gain even more experience. If you want, you can mainly focus on the daytime optional content. This can give the game better pacing between day and night.
In the end, Sonic Unleashed ended up becoming my second favorite Sonic game, right after Adventure 2. (Generations comes in a very close third, sorry, haha)

  • @Mike-mf3ed
    @Mike-mf3ed 2 роки тому +1

If you unlock all the combos (the Chun-nan hub world glitch helps a lot in this) then it doesn’t matter what you press to attack, you’ll be using the combos anyway. If you don’t wanna be stuck doing the same combo despite unlocking all of them, I suggest randomising the two attack buttons (X and Y on Xbox) and how often you press them. This not only makes the werehog more enjoyable, it also saves time especially if you upgrade your strength as well.
Instead of levelling up everything about the werehog like I did, I suggest focusing on levelling up combat, strength and life.

My first introduction to him was in the "Night of the Werehog" when I was younger and I personally loved it a lot. I approached Unleashed the same way I approached 06. I first heard about both games, and a bit about their ups and downs. But when I got my hands on them, I just had a blast. It took some time to get used to the controls for both Daytime and Nighttime gameplay (I played Generations first before the former), but I loved it all the way through! Shamar and Eggmanland were both long and jank to me, though.

Unleasehed was my first 3D sonic game along with colors way back in 2011. When I learned people weren't so fond of Unleashed, I kinda got mad but was always too afraid to talk about it. I had the Wii version and still enjoyed the game so I knew without a doubt that other people could've enjoyed it. It's a swag game with swag gameplay, combat system wasn't the best but it was enjoyable
