It's really beautiful how you take in these poor hens and give them a safe, healthy home. The ladies from last year look so much better! I always enjoy seeing your chicken compost system. It doesn't matter if parts of it are messy - it's such a functional and productive system and it's full of creative ideas and experiments. Love it!
Man this is really beautiful. I don't know what it is but that just looks right. Like a feeling. That we can live in harmony with nature and everyone benefits. Yep permaculture

Totally real life, getting by with what you can do. I live in Uruguay working on my tiny farm, chicken area. I don’t have a lot of cash but doing what I can. Love it ❤
Every part of this feels compelling! One day I will duplicate the system exactly as you have done it. What a charming place for your little feathered workers to produce tons of compost.
Nothing “wild” or “feral” about any of that. Just a very beautifully well thought out system, loaded to the max with permaculture design principles. I love the compost towers and the idea of planting chicken greens into them.
My gosh, the pond and the duckweed help make the chickenyard look gorgeous! Honestly looks like a bunch of healthy, happy chickens. Great work, you all!
While so many UA-camrs are reiterating that it's impossible to make enough compost (bummer), you and your hens have created a veritable flood! That's SO encouraging. I remember watching you dig your little ditches and plant your little twigs, and feeling a little dubious and quite curious about where you were going with it. Holy smokes! you saw abundant possibility, and you took me (and all of us) quietly along for the ride. I see better now. Thanks for what you do and how you go about doing it! and, love the duckweed vending machine.
Duckweed vending macine!! I love that concept!! I think i might have to try that! I can grab some Duckweed to start it off from the channel across the street 😉 Love ur channel 💕
Love your videos and your energy. Just set up our first chicken composting system and it's all thanks to you. Thank you. Our space is also limited and you've helped me to learn how to evolve my space as my context changes and I'm excited to see how the chickens will help improve the fertility of the garden. Our hens also had their beaks burnt unfortunately but I see them happy healthy and enjoying their new home having been here a month now. Warm hugs from the mountains of Catalonia, Spain.
I love it!! It's like a chicken safari park! I also like the tall planting columns. I have been trying to do some raised beds but the rabbits and possibly also raccoons have still been able to reach my plants Maybe a tower will ensure I finally get my own tomato! I always get ideas from you and appreciate your sharing.
I absolutely love your system! I've been working on something"similar" with a much smaller space and only 16 hens. I also give away my excess eggs to family and friends. And kudos to you for taking in the new hens! It's beautiful to watch them as they explore and experience LIFE the way they should! ❤️
@@yLeprechaun I absolutely love my hens. This is my second flock. My first flock I had for 6 years...the current flock is on the road to 3 years now. I seem to add a small handful every spring...but I really need to keep the number where it is now. Lol.
I just discovered this channel today but I am already in love with the land and the chickens. I wish I lived in a home with a garden where I could grow things! Thank you so much for these videos, I am learning so much as well as enjoying your whole chill and nourishing vibe.
It's always so relaxing to watch your updates. I wish I could emulate how you're looking after your hens, they look so healthy and the eggs must be really rich.
I love this so much, and I've loved seeing how it has grown and changed over the years. We're working on buying land for our future farm, and I'm so excited to incorporate a space like his when we get there. Thank you for all you share!
Also, you should not apologize for what looks like such an amazing space for those chickens and their people. I wish I had that much room for my 6. Learning so much from you both!
‘Messy and wild and feral’ and ALL of it compelling. Imaginative, innovative, respectful and inspiring are all words that come to mind watching EdibleAcres.
What a beautiful video Sean! You have created an Eden for your hens and it is a joy to see those overworked and stressed ladies restored to good health within your system. Love the idea of the ‘vending machine’. I have been implementing the ideas that I can. Edible Acres continues to be an inspiration - thank you Sean and Sasha. So glad that I found you.
I live in the desert, and my yard is sand. I did raised beds this year and got six chicks (my first). Currently, there are five remaining (we lost one the first 24hrs), having a chicken party in the garden, and I’m doing small compost piles, and just making layers on top of the ground, chips, compost, ash then peat. It taken all spring, but they’ve covered the garden, and the raised beds once. I am very pleased with life with chickens.
A small design suggestion for desert life. If possible, try sunken beds vs raised beds. It will help retain moisture. But that's a technique I've only read about, I don't live there, so... perhaps the salt goes in my eye. ;)
@@yLeprechaun I’ve been working with large pieces of wood in the bottom of the raised beds. Retains water very well. Also, I’ve experimented with ollas. Unglazed terracotta pots that hold water. Fascinating concept. Mixed results, so far.
You could really change the ground of your property over time by embracing the composting as much as you're able! I've seen places that went from sand to beautiful soil over the course of a few years by just working with nature and feeding the soil.
@@h.s.6269 this is my hope. Layer on top of the sand for a few years, no tilling. And just work with the drainage the land already uses. Maybe turn it in a few years.

Enormously beautiful and productive. Not at all how I would probably do it, personally, but I can hear how happy it makes you (and your ladies) and that means its just right for your context. Which, really, is all you can ask for.

This place looks very beautiful. And obviously impressively organized and purposeful with all the things, thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed your video. Its refreshing to see the tranquility of the imperfections that made your chickens and compost so lovely to see. I really liked how healthy your entire set up looks.
It's quite a small area for 70 "free range" chickens and yet their lives have SO MUCH more enrichment than a poxy lawn. Amazing work and someday I'd love to have a space where I can do similar. ❤️
It is interesting how a limiited space can be confining and negative or somehow be more than enough, it depends on what is happening in that space. A blank open field with this many hens would feel pretty rough.
I just started with chickens, and I use your videos to measure if they are happy. 😁 They still stay around the chicken coop but are exploring more areas as time passes. And they sound and look happy. 😄
Pretty Darn Nice! Let's hear it for the volunteers!👏👏👏👏👏 And the newly adopted hen ladies! And Sasha and Sean who care and make it all productive! She said it meant less shoveling and cleaning out the coop. Thanks for sharing your little piece of summer heaven. Blessings Abound.
