  • What differences were there between Hitler's and Napoleon's invasion of Russia? Did they commit similar acts? Why did each of them fail? Did the Germans try to correct Napoleon's mistakes? At the end of June 1812 and 1941, two large armies invaded Russia. The first was French and the second was German. Next in this program, we are going to analyze the main differences and similarities that both attacks had.

    No, Moscow was not devastated before the arrival of Napoleon. The city was devasted after his arrival by the russian prisoners who were freed by the russian authorities before the arrival of Napoleon.

    One thing, you forgot to mention is that the Soviet Union's industries were all safe in the Far East, beyond the Ural Mountains and out of reach for the German bombers.
    As a result, the Soviet factories were cranking out tanks, artillery guns, planes, ammunition etc.
    This insane industrial output, in combination with the massive armies that the Soviets could muster and replenish their huge loses, eventually won.
    There's a report from a German Panzer commander from the Battle of Kursk, where he said that during the first day, they destroyed almost 100 Soviet tanks.
    They thought that they had already won, but the next day, the Soviet tanks kept coming and coming in waves. And keep in mind: the Soviet had several divisions who were kept in reserve and didn't get a chance to fight there!
    Now add to that also the equally strong industrial & military might of the USA and you can see, that Nazi Germany never stood a chance.

      You completely forgot a very important thing. The entire military industry of Conquered Europe worked for Germany. The Czechoslovakian Skoda factories alone produced three times more tanks for Hitler than all the tank factories in England. From the French who lost the war, Germany received 7000 serviceable tanks and 3000 combat aircraft + ammunition which was enough for ten years of continuous war. The Russians turned out to be stubborn and hardy fighters - these qualities destroyed both Napoleon and Hitler.

      @@donaldlyons17 Until mid-1945, Germany had no problems with recruiting an army and resources for the military industry. More than three million Europeans from conquered countries served in the German army. In addition, Hungary Italy Romania Spain Croatia fought on the side of Germany - their combat units amounted to 1.5 million soldiers fought with the Russians on the eastern front. Now about the military industry. Iron ore and rare earth metals were imported in a continuous stream from Sweden. Through Argentina and Spain, the Germans received aviation gasoline and spare parts for Ford cars directly from American companies. By the way, by the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the number of Ford cars of various models amounted to 70 percent of all cars in the German army,.....

    Napoleon never wanted to go to Moscow. He intended to fight and win a large battle within 50 or so miles inside of Russia. Just bad luck Napoleon barely missed encountering Alexander's group.
    Hitler's original plan was to go through Ukraine and to the Caucasus, but Halder and his cronies altered the plan to go mostly towards Moscow. Hitler's generals betrayed him and wasted precious fuel in the process trying to get Moscow and Leningrad. Failing to get Moscow, Leningrad, and the Caucasus oil.

    If Germany would have taken Moscow it would have been a repeat of 1812 despite the railroads they would have been sabotaged and waiting for that peace deal which was never going to come if the soldiers didn’t push them back the winter would have.

      @shaldar44 6 місяців тому +8

      No they were not about to win Kursk, no matter what revisionists tell you. It had become a battle of attrition, because the northern and southern wehrmacht forces didn't progress according to plan. Yes, the southern pincers made some good advances, but the Soviets had more reserves and not being able to link up with the northern pincer would have got the southern pincer cut off and surrounded instead. The North Africa debacle just gave Hitler a good reason to withdraw from another possible Stalingrad.
