This song was made by Mike , and he wrote it for Chester cause he was having issues with Alcohol/Drugs . This song made Chester get his shit together and has said this is the most meaningful song to him personally
I’ve read that Mike wrote this before he met Chester. It was supposed to go on Hybrid Theory as an instrumental or something. I guess he began to write the lyrics later. Look up “Drawing Linkin Park”. It’s a demo to Breaking The Habit. There’s other demos where Mike added his vocals to figure out the song structure.
Mike wrote this originally as a poem for a friend who was suffering from addiction, he never could finish it. If I remember right his friend died. In the early days after Chester joined the band he had a bad drug habit and was very distant from the band. Mike finished the poem and turned it into a song for Chester. This was perhaps the hardest song for Chester to record as he would break down while trying to sing it, It was also his favorite song. You’ll often hear Papercut was his favorite, but that was just his favorite to perform.
if i recall mike wrote this song to chester and it's about his drug and alcohol related problems (which is also related to his depression). the music video looks like an anime and is basically chester commiting suicide but in reverse. really sad given the way he died.
Mike always said this was about “a friend,” but I think we all know now it was about Chester, when he was trying to get clean and sober. It would ultimately take several more years and an intervention by the band for him to finally do it, and even then he would relapse every so often. So, this was an important song, and it’s one the guys often point to as one of their favorites.
LP is timeless. Especially meteora as far as rock albums. In the future 100 years from now I bet they won’t tell the difference whether it was made in 2004 or the following twenty years. My December off reanimation is a favorite too
Mike actually wrote this for another friend before he met Chester, and never put lyrics to it until the band asked him to for the album. However, this song became very personal to Chester because of his own struggles with drugs and alcohol.
you need to listen to this song live version in birmingham that was the last time he ever performed... you really need to watch it till the very end of the video
Yes I really wanted to see what would be his reaction, it's painful like you can really hear the pain in his voice and at the end omg it's like he knew that it would be his last show, heartbreaking 💔😭

I mean, they kinda go hand In hand though don't they? Makes sense to me to flip-flop between the two from Chet's perspective
