kevin cvalciuc At the speeds he’s going the bullets are more likely to not even make it to the canopy and even if he did the likely hood of it penetrating are extremely low because of the angle it will be going at it at such speeds. It will more likely bounce off harmlessly than actually do damage. But to hit the canopy is gonna be the hardest part. Since it’s such a small area to hit.
A free hint if you will allow me. If I may, at the end you did the same mistake everyone (almost) does. You were thinking 2 dimensions, and you were flying/turning horizontally. When you began to do that, that's where he began to get the advantage on you. To take advantage of the F14, what you should do instead, is use the rudder to put your nose up 20 to 30 degree (depending on your speed), and use the powerfull thrust to generate lift (that your wings will lose). Somewhat like when you do a carrier landing, you use your throttle to maintain/adjust altitude and not wing lift/stick movement. You'll achieve an unbelievable turn rate that he will not be able to do anything against. Also there is another thing people don't really know. Turn rate is not the only thing important. Turn radius is also a large part of the game of positioning. At lower speed, your turn radius is much tighter, meaning that even if your slow speed induce a slower turn rate, you will still out turn him. So all in all, with that hint (nose up), you will lose speed, thus tighter turn radius, and because you use your engine to generate thrust, you can sustain a very low speed turn without fear of stalling (to a reasonnable point obviously). And if he's trying his passing-by tactic, while he's getting away from you because of his speed (and large turn radius), you'll be pointing you nose (thus radar, gun and missiles) toward him way before he finishes his turn.

Raphael Vildren That’s not a bug, that’s a failure of game mechanics. If the game considers lower engine power resulting from a damaged engine “dead” then that’s the problem. Not a bug. Plus what does that have to do with the computer targeting system when they’ve been DAMAGED?
Watching you and Feisty duke it out is always a treat, and as I probably have said in a few other dogfights of your I've watched, the longer he is in the air, more nervous I get about the outcome.. Probably one of my new favorite fights of your my dude!
Big fan, watch all your videos. Love the cool calm commentary that’s not annoying or a distraction from the flying. About to complete my set up and start flying myself, thanks to your videos. Would love to see more multiple rounds, one after the other dogfights with other competitors or AI
I just downloaded the Tomcat last night. Used to love that plane when I played Navy Fighters Gold in the '90s. In DCS it makes it apparent why the big old bird was replaced: its targeting systems are old school and not as effective as the modern jets. It's also big and wobbly - a modern FCS would have helped it. The HUD looks stone age compared to the F-18C - I always find myself head down looking for my airspeed. Maybe it's just a new jet to me, but I find the Hornet gets to a kill chain much quicker in BFM. It still looks the best, and I love the powerful engines, but I can see why it had trouble finding relevance next to the Hornet.
They tried to upgrade it but politics killed it, it could have been lighter had more. Thrust more fuel better avionics and electronics and woudo age retained the swing wings
Problem with the Tomcat besides getting up there in age was the maintenance time required to keep em flying for every flight hour it was like a 1000 man hours on the maintenance side or something crazy like that I don't remember. They were costly and hard to maintain they pissed fuel when they were on the deck like crazy. Compare that to the Hornets it's understandable why they changed to an almost totally Hornet based strike wing. Love both aircraft but that's basically what happened.
They were going to update the avionics as they did with the f15 and f18 but it was sadly victim to politics. Otherwise, it could have been the deadliest bird in the sky aside from the f22.
Yeah, now that I think about it, if they had done just that the only remaining country with Tomcats would probably just incorporate the functionality it in to their remaining birds. As it is the US Gov’t destroyed absolutely every piece of the tomcats that wasn’t used for show at a museum so that it wouldn’t end up in their hands. Too bad, but understandable.
I saw a video from Grim Reapers, they did a SAM avoidance exercise. The squadron member was destroyed but the plane continued to be able to fly. Radar of SAM's recognized it as dead and wouldn't lock or fire. Could that have been the cause of no lock during your fight? If I'm not mistaken a Hornet was being flown in that one too.
“Superior aircraft” Depends what you mean In a dogfight: I heard the hornet has the best sustained turn rate of all the aircraft in the game if you reach a certain speed
Yeah I mean all you have to do in the hornet is get inside the other guy's turn circle and stay inside. Your speed will be lower but you just cut all of the other guy's circles short so you keep up. And since you can usually 180 twice as quickly as the guy you're fighting (if you approach the merge at 450kts and do an upwards split-s at the merge) and then go into a heavy lag pursuit so you're getting in the airspace behind him as he's still turning to get his nose even pointed at you, you can get in that position almost instantly. It took Feisty a bit of time to get there doing what he did, but once he was there even with a damaged engine, the cat had no chance
The hornet has a number of disadvantages to the Tomcat. Notably speed and rate of climb. Hornet also bleeds speed in a tight turn so you need to be quite patient. I'd probably still rate the hornet for dogfighting because it's just easier to fly but it's definitely not an unfair fight
It'S really interesting to see how the new Navy jet performs the old rusty one. You both performed very well and every Top Gun instructor would be proud.
Grim Reapers posted a video not too long ago on fighting in a Tomcat. He was monitoring his speed using the position of the wings, keeping his speed around 300 kias or less, staying out of blower, and sticking out full flaps in turns. They couldn't find anything that could stick with it in a turn.
Knife fight a Hornet with a Tomcat?! That's one hell of a uphill battle. Kudos for putting some holes in a formidable opponent. I would like to see the Falcon go up against the Hornet next.
I’m no expert, but if you pull him up into the vertical after the first merge and light your burner, you will bleed his speed as he follows you up, once your over the top shut them off to avoid to much speed. If he follows you up he will not have the speed to pull his nose up and will be forced to follow you down, at this stage light them again and take it back in the vertical his speed will be gone and you can roll over the top and land perfectly on his 6. This was a tactic taught by the Topgun instructors when the F14 was first released at Miramar. Again I’m no expert, but the thrust advantage the F14 has over the Hornet should lend itself to a vertical fight rather than the turn. Much like the 109 tactics of WW2. Awesome video as always and fantastic skills displayed by both of you.
You relied too much on your electronics. There is a reason there are tracers on your rounds. You still had a gun sight, should have tried getting a shot manually.
@@MsRifle I know what you mean but that ideology was the doom of many pilots in nam ( ever heard of top gun? ). Guns serve a purpose and the tomcat has around 700 rounds thats enough even for spraying a lil bit.
I feel like you should of went in to a vertical spiral when he was pulling inside your circle, since you had more energy and he couldnt follow. Then drop back down on him and latch on to his 6. Great fight tho!
So this is how it works, he’s gonna speed up forcing you to try to speed up fast enough where you’d over shoot then he’ll go vertical and slow down, now he’s gonna speed up go on your 6 and get you in a position where he can shoot you down
Lol! Tony Scott wanted something for the character 'Maverick' to stand out from the rest and he saw the Cobra maneuver. It wowed the ignorant audience but was a cringefest for the real pilots (retired or otherwise).
Kudos to Feisty, that Hornet was mean. You did well too, I suspect IRL his engine damage wouldn't allow for such an extended fight. Kind of expected a second round though. Please do more BFM against skilled opponents.
The F-14 and F-18 turn rate pretty similarly at subsonic speed. I think what you should have done at the end is gone lower to the deck to get your energy back like Feisty and eventually at sea level deny him the opportunity to do so at which point your superior climbing should have given you the edge. These two aircraft are very closely matched at subsonic speeds, supersonic being no contest as the Tomcat is a bullet, so often the sharpest pilot will win the day and although you was flying very well around your corner speed Feisty was just performing majestic ballet with his Hornet. I would also recommend entering the merge at full supersonic and climbing straight after giving you height/energy advantage and transonic manueverability after bleeding off your supersonic in the climb.
@@cirrusimages , there won't be much of a guns hitting range if the F-14 is a few thousand feet above you after the merge and can then point at leisure on the downward path using loss of height to maintain his turn at maximum instantaneous corner velocity whereas the guy who is horizontal only sees corner velocity briefly before losing energy. 'Hoser' used this tactic all the time and he was probably the best BFM F-14 pilot.
That was a pretty good fight! At some point I thought you should have tried a “Maverick” 😎 (pull brakes, stick back) just for the glory of it. Keep em coming!
Interesting his last bit, leading with lift vector and then relaxing to lag and leading again with some lift regained, patiently worming his way. I think that was the technique Mover-CW Lemoine was talking about in his last video.
Perhaps I'm thinking like a WWII dogfighter here, but is there a reason you never extend from a tight turning fight when you're in a faster, higher TWR plane with "too much speed"?
I wouldn't call the F-14 the superior aircraft in this case. It has good turning capability at high speeds, can climb better, and has a better T/W ratio, but the Hornet is deadly when it gets into a tight turning fight. Don't let it's size fool ya.
hey man yes maybe but its my understanding that the the tomcat can out rate the hornet in a turn fight. in the hands of a pilot that can pull Gs to maintain that exact corner. The tomcat will win every time. (my humble 2 cents)
@@GrowlingSidewinder Understandable. I've flown both on Dogfighter servers and have seen that the Tomcat can outturn the Hornet. Youre right about that. The Hornets biggest advantage is being able to bleed off speed faster and force overshoots, get it's nose around, and keep behind the Tomcat at slower speeds, stuff like that. Ive learned to try and make it fight my fight. Great video by the way, really showed off the abilities of both aircraft.
@@GrowlingSidewinder you aren't kidding when you said "if the pilot can pull Gs" I am watching videos of pilots losing consciousnesses in training and its rather disturbing. Hell, it's not even in the more exotic spectrum of G-force when its occurring. ua-cam.com/video/n-8QHOUWECU/v-deo.html
@@OverlordAntares thank you glad you liked it man, and yes ur correct, the hornet deff has those advantages and as long as it doesnt fight the tomcats game and with a bit of luck with the tomcat guy doing a couple stupid things the hornet can deff win.

Looking at the debrief part of this video, I notice some of your maneuvers generated upwards of 10 G's : is that why your screen shortly went dark a few times during the dogfight ? Is DCS simulating the pilot blacking out ? That's fricking amazing level of detail !

15:16 That was magic! GG
whay a fight - holding my breath for entire battle :d
awesome video as always, really good fight
You got a new sub. Quality content man, I like this dogfighting stuff. FEISTY's got a smart AI.
When my dad farts after eating Taco Bell. 2:24
Sitting there with your Ice Man helmet, acting all cool.
I think that was the technique Mover-CW Lemoine was talking about in his last video.
nice battle. For the lock bug you may need to hit the cage button when in gun.
More against Fiesty please! He's the only worthy opponent for you so far.
That growling intro always makes my dogs loose their fucking minds.
Perhaps I'm thinking like a WWII dogfighter here, but is there a reason you never extend from a tight turning fight when you're in a faster, higher TWR plane with "too much speed"?
Dude, the merch is sick! time for a new hat, decal and mouse pad xD
awesome man i'm glad you like it. thanks for supporting the channel like that.
Great fight and very entertaining!
thanks for watching glad you enjoyed.
I always click your videos when tomcats are at play.
With these maneuverability capabilities of the hornet and tomcat... seeing you play the mirage 2000... it is valid to say the mirage 2000 will beat both hornet and tomcat as it has both advantages?
Another great video
thank you very much bro glad you enjoyed it.
every video I watch I am dodging hits in my seat lol
thats going to be a fight in the new top gun movie... f-14 vs f-18... tom in f-18, Iranian in f-14.... good fight!
Alan Dampog YES!!!
My favorite matchup so far!
I’m pretty sure there’s a bug where a component of a plane takes more damage than the total structure of the plane, and the system flags him as “dead”
The tomcat is pound for pound the best fighter ever made as far as date of creation for it's time it was the best
Facts
In ur dreams haha
The Eagle would like a word with you.
@@krankysfirebrand485 in reality bro
@FlatOut
Yep that’s what we’re talking about now
Great dog fight
Funny thing is I had my 3 radar mode switch not lock up a target the other day as well multiple times. Thought maybe i messed something up but glad to see it's not just me. I don't have any hud visual moving radar pipper either.
Yess finally another Tomcat vs. Bug fight! But do you really have to carry 4 heavy-ass AIM-54s in this fight? Wouldn't carrying an air superiority load of 4 Sparrows/4 Sidewinders or 6 Sparrows/2 Sidewinders? Why the Phoenixes?
during the actual fight the tomcat is clean. its only during the intro that I made it have some missiles just cuz it'll look cooler
Both landed safely on the sand, time for a game of volleyball.
Looking at the debrief part of this video, I notice some of your maneuvers generated upwards of 10 G's : is that why your screen shortly went dark a few times during the dogfight ? Is DCS simulating the pilot blacking out ? That's fricking amazing level of detail !
yes thats correct thats exactly whats happening. DCS is pretty amazing like that
@@GrowlingSidewinder that really makes me want to dust off my old joysticks and start "flying" 😁.
Excellent victory........by the superior aircraft. ;)
real good merc needs no 10 percent or helping someone...
and alot of urs is good i would seriously buy it if i saw it at a store.
so just wanted to say ur shirts and some cups are decent design and for that u get a good job
All fun and games until u see sidewinder in your gta5 session with a jet
Seems to be a common bug where the game thinks the plane is "dead" after being hit and the targeting computer no longer works.
6:02 the Hornet might of hit a few of the computers behind the cockpit in the overhead passes.
If we enter a war with Iran we might see a scene like this.
Would be interesting to see Fiesty in the F-14 vs you in F-18 to truely see if it's the plane or the pilot that is superior.
Great fight, Feisty’s tuff.
Hi GS very nice video. One of your best. You had him long enough. It was the bug who beat you.
BTW, can you have some DCS with phantom.Please,,,,,,.
1 of the few times that you lose to someone else. Nice flight!
Old video but wouldn’t ground interference screw with the lock on?
Great fight
Did you guys not do missiles
I'm actually surprised by the maneuverability of the F-14. I thought the F-18 would be able to out turn the F-14 in a direct turn fight.
How do you get that good graphics and how do you make your cruiser and the gauges and stuff like that I need help
Sidewinder I just subbed, I'd like to see you dogfight a Mig 29 in an F16.
welcome to the channel and I will as soon as the F-16 comes out
Great video today, nice work! I was thinking there'd be a best out of 3. Are there going to be any more inclement weather/adverse conditions dogfights in the near future? The one you did a while back with the cloud cover and snow was great too.
5:05 was a TOPGUN move by Maverick lol
Why is there constant beeping in the aircraft?
There is a pipper bug that I experience at times but in your case it looks like your radar was damaged. But your hud symbology was changing which is weird.
