  • Fitz has had questions about the funding of KU's Memorial Stadium rebuild, which is part of the larger Gateway District project, and the stadium rebuild possibly using state-director taxpayer money. University of Kansas athletics director Travis Goff reached out to Fitz via TwitterX to discuss the topic in person, which took place Thursday afternoon in Goff's office adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse. The conversation itself is about 12 minutes long, during which Goff explained why the two projects are connected under one budget and how the state-director grants are paying for a sprawling conference center at the north end of the stadium.

We should rename this video "Travis Goff! Get in my belly!" 😂😂😂
I hope you enjoy this. It's a low key discussion that I left understanding the mixed funding of these two projects. It was satisfying to hear things directly from Mr. Goff. And it was good to see Collin Sexton. KU is in good hands.

Here is a question. Why are they calling the KU stadium a renovation project? When technically there building a brand new stadium from the ground up. I feel like them calling it a renovation project is very misleading. Because a renovation is supposed to be pitting a new coat of paint or remodel a old existing structure to restore and make it look and feel new again.

I’m glad Lance is committed to KU and Klieman is committed to K-State, it really helps our conference when great coaches don’t bolt to other conferences. We need more big 12 coaches like them and I believe we do.

I think the Big 12 has 4 of the top 10 coaches in college right now with Leipold, Kleiman, Gundy, and Whittingham. Nobody else is doing more with less on a consistent bases. Matt Campbell isn’t far behind them either.

Good job Reporter Tim, and Mr. Goff as well, an excellent example of having a real discussion instead of just bickering back and forth online with zero listening. Hope the rising tide can lift all boats.

Thank you, Fitz, for an objective approach to the discussion and evaluation of the situation. I only hope now that the fans of our two schools can move towards a more friendly rivalry, without hate and vitriol, of which both sets of fans are guilty. We are all Kansans and should pull for both teams, except, of course, when we play each other. Thank you, Fitz, for your open honesty.

I couldn’t agree more! With the increasing successes of KU, it has turned a bit nasty, which isn’t necessary to sustain our rivalry. Growing up a KSU fan, and now having a daughter at each school, the increased nastiness in sports doesn’t stay in sports, as it leaks into a greater part of both Universities, and I believe that this aspect tarnishes the great reputations of both, and I’d like to see it end completely.

All for it. If equity exists, the next big dollar state funded initiative comes to Manhattan. Hats off to Goff for meeting with Tim. KU’s Stadium must be one of the very worst in the Power 4. They need it, our state’s economy needs it and NE KS needs it. Tim, great job in the interview and way to get out of the office to fund this important topic.

Well done, sir! As a KU alum and booster, I have followed this project from square one, but I did learn some new details in your interview. I'm glad it was done, and it probably works better with a non-KU flavor. If it were a KU beat writer handling it, it would be easy to claim that certain things were glossed over or not discussed to protect KU's point of view.

I was afraid of that. sounded like a promo video for KU stadium. To top it off they are not even using state taxes. KU is using federal ARPA funds and its going to a conference center at the stadium?? Goff also said KSU also got ARPA funds. How much and what were they used for. Did KSU drop the ball and not get some of these funds for athletics?? but is was a good discussion.

Google will show you what each school got. If I recall, KSU got $35 million for an agricultural building. My memory may be wrong so double check my memory.

My whole life I have rooted for both Kansas and Kansas State. I am a Kansas homie. I grew up here and just moved back here for the fourth time. We have had to fight the dominance of Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. So when we start fighting each other it really pisses me off.
The first college game I ever attended was Lynn Dicky putting a licking on Colorado who was ranked no. 2 I believe. That was in Manhattan. I was hooked. Football was my game. I painted my room purple because Vince Gibson convinced me there was a purple power. Of course I was in 4-H, live in an AG community and I heard all the talk against KU.
Isn't it enough we have to lose for decades to these other programs, lose our best Kansas athletes to these other schools. Imagine Barry Sanders at either school. I'm glad to see many of our native sons staying home.
Kansas has had the good fortune to be growing overall despite rural decline. I remember when Wichita lost Boeing. It was just gut wrenching. And then to lose it to South Carolina one of the ten states with the lowest IQ. The corridor from Manhattan to KC is the most important economic development area in the state. That area is anchored by two very good Universities. Surely you realize how we compare to Nebraska and Iowa and how we are trending. If we don't work together we really missing a huge opportunity.
I've lived all over and I really believe there is no place like home, that Kansas is a great place to live, to work, to play football. Dang, this is going to be a great fall. Good luck Cats. Good luck Hawks. Go take this conference!

Your contractors and subs can’t line item a breakdown of costs and where each dollar is supposed to go?!?! That’s a recipe for overrun of both cost and schedule. Good luck! If you can’t at least identify the places you might be getting double charged of missed where the two projects “interface” it’s a recipe for a clusterfvck.

I think both comments are uncalled for. KU has definitely had some issues recently in their basketball program you have to admit. While true, the cheating comment was overdone. The go win a natty comment is equally overdone. That comment is why kU is despised. As if a few titles in basketball (which most have to admit is a historic great program) is what defines a university. It’s the arrogance that non Jayhawks can’t stand.
