One of the most important monuments of Greek and world shipping
The floating museum HELLAS LIBERTY, is one of the 4 remaining Liberty ships, which the US government accepted thanks to the coordinated efforts of the state and the Greek shipping community to donate to the Greek government in 2007. The ship arrived by tow in Piraeus on In January 2009 and around May, restoration work began in its original form, which was completed in July 2010.
At the point where Hellas Liberty is located, time seems to have frozen. The old cargo ship, in a corner of the harbor where commercial activities have long ceased, is a rare setting. It is no coincidence that scenes from international and Greek film productions have been shot there.
The ship's visitor, as soon as he passes the ladder and climbs on his deck, has the opportunity to admire it almost from end to end. Its warehouses have been configured to host events, lectures and classes, while two of them host permanent exhibitions. The ship's commode is also fully accessible, as is the bridge with its wooden rudder, brass instruments and radio. The open decks offer a rare and, given the setting, nostalgic view of the grand harbor.
Admission to the great exhibit is free and Mr. Kouzilos is there to gladly answer visitors' questions. After all, his desire for Liberty and its second decade in the port of Piraeus is clear: "We want people to come, especially young people, and some to love it more than we do."
History:
As World War II raged on, it appeared that the US would not be idle for long. With the Allied fleet dwindling, the construction of light-armed cargo ships capable of convoying supplies to Europe at war was deemed imperative. These ships, which took the symbolic name Liberty, began to be built in 1941.
By 1945, 2,711 Liberty ships had been built in the US. Hellas Liberty is one of the most important monuments of Greek and global shipping, because it is one of the four active liberties worldwide.
Two liberties are fully operational and are in the US as floating museums, retaining their war livery. There is another one there, stranded, which has been converted into a factory. The fourth is none other than Hellas Liberty which is located in the port of Piraeus.
