The only reason I can think of for them to have him be a Rivers is if that's supposed to be a nod for his plot in the books. In the books he was knighted as Ser Gendry of the Hollow Hill when he joined the Brotherhood Without Banners, the Hollow Hill being their secret base in the riverlands. Even then it still doesn't work though.
"Have you ever considered the best ruler is someone who doesn't want to rule?" Uh...no? Kings who don't want to rule soon decide not to rule and let the kingdom fall into debt by the millions, and pay no attention to the council as they fight among themselves for power. **coughRobertcough**
But that's not really what it means. It's more that someone with a strong sense of duty to the people but no willingness to rule (Jon, Stannis, etc.) would be better than someone who wants to rule just cuz.
In the show’s defense (God, never thought I’d be saying that this season lol), there’s a difference between “He doesn’t want to rule” as in “He does not covet power and leadership” vs. “He doesn’t want to rule” as in “He doesn’t want to participate in the duties and responsibilities of ruling”. Jon doesn’t seek positions of power or leadership but he does try to rise to the challenge whenever he receives one. Robert, on the other hand, just didn’t want to be bothered with the actual business of leadership. If you want to call out Varys for contradicting himself, I would instead recommend focusing on the fact that he claims Jon would be a better ruler than Dany, while also - practically in the same sentence - admitting that Jon is too weak and manipulable and that Dany would walk all over him if they were married. Really selling his qualities as a good leader there, Varys...

Wouldn’t legitimizing Gendry mean he’s now a threat to Daenerys? He’s now a legitimate heir to Robert, the previous king, and would now have more claim to the throne than Cersei, Daenerys and even Jon. Why would she do that especially since the very next scene is of her and Jon talking about Jon’s position?
That is correct but first he would need support of the noble lords and an capable army to defeat Jon, Dany, Cersei, Yara, the mart...you see where this is going.
The things that are off: Dany can’t see the Fleet even though they have a clear shot on her and she’s in the air The fact that being a virgin isn’t even a bad thing in this universe, most highborns would want a lady to be so. Obviously the Gendry Rivers thing and the fact proposals don’t exist in this world. Bronn walking into Winterfell with a fucking crossbow. This stupid idea that Dany’s a bad person for wanting to attack her enemy That weird scene in the desert at the end.
Varys being worried about Dany's state of mind in the beginning of the episode made no sense to me. Console her! Help her! She just lost Jorah, half her army, Rhaegal injured in that battle, and she was attacked by a dragon who was once her 3rd child. She's devastated. Just help her. For fucks sake.
Heck, even for men, while it wouldn't necessarily be expected for an unmarried man to be a virgin like it would be for an unmarried lady, it still wouldn't be a topic of embarrassment or mockery. Its basically taking the sexual mores of the West from decades after the sexual revolution and planting them in a medieval setting, which is nonsense.
@@JasmineBoothe1 Joffrey is killing innocent people left and right? I'll wait and see how this plays out. Danny is upset because one of her dragons and both her best friends died? KILL HER NOW, BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!
Personally, I think Sansa breaking her oath was one of the few moments of good writing this episode. She was trained in the art of politics by Little Finger. Of course she values political gain. And she knows Tyrion cares more about morality than loyalty, she saw how he treated Joffrey, who was not only his king but his family. And he’s been constantly shit on by Dany since he got to Winterfell. So she saw an opportunity to plant a seed of doubt in her “enemy’s” closest advisor’s mind.
Man I forgot how many frustratingly stupid decisions these characters made here. By legitimizing Gendry, she has made a possible rival to her claim. Tyrion is also an idiot here. First 4 seasons he hated his sister, knew who and what she is and yet in these last 2 seasons he's been all amiable with her. Jon telling Sansa makes Jon look like a moron. HE KNOWS Sansa does not like Dany. I also don't get why he HAD to tell her. Dany should just propose to Jon or vice versa, Yes Jon would be the prominent ruler, but Dany would be the real power much like Margery was to Joffrey and Tommen(Until Cersei fubared it all) or how Tywin was when he was Hand. I also don't get why they had to travel separately, go by land where the Ironfleet cannot do anything, nevermind that you're halving the half that you have left, making it easier for Cersei to pick apart what's left. I get Dany's desperation in wanting to go south asap, but even she would realize, half my peeps are gone and the half that are left are injured as is my dragon aka my child. Cersei killing Missandei was also stupid, she is smart enough to know she'd make for a valuable hostage. Edit: And at the end, Cersei has the ace card in her hand, she could have easily killed Dany.
How does legitimizing gendry make him her rival ? She legitimized him , a blacksmith from flea bottom. That loyalty has definitely more power . Also The whole point of being amiable with cersie is because Tyrion loves Jamie, who loves cersie . He wouldn't want his brother to feel that kind of loss . Also jon's bloodline is obviously his family's business and they deserve to know, also he made them swear to not say it out , which is a royal promise , so that's Sansa's fault . Also unlike margery , dany wants to rule the seven kingdoms while sitting on the iron throne , because even though margery could manipulate rulers , the final decision would always be in the king's hand . The title of queen of the realm matters to her . Also travel by land ? Are you nuts ? Kings landing is right in the way if you travel by land , making it much more dangerous , and dragonstone is an island , so they had to travel by water nonetheless and the iron fleet would've been waiting for them anyways . So you so understand Dany's desperation and still question her desperate behavior ? Also why would cersie use missandei as hostage ? To blackmail the queen to end the war ? You're the one dumb if you think that was ever working .
1- No. She is legitimizing Gendry as a form to control him. 2- Agreed 3- To be fair, Jon is a moron. He is known for making bad decisions and he also told Sansa hoping that she wouldn't tell anybody. 4- Dany wouldn't have proposed to Jon cos she didn't want to share power. The throne is hers and hers alone. And Jon pretty much became disgusted after learning Dany was her aunt.
@@akhilnair1137 If the Stormlands rejected her they could claim Gendry as Robert's rightful heir. Tyrion should know more than anyone that Cersei is duplicitous and not to be trusted. He likely would not want her killed, but he would want her defeated and imprisoned. Yes, however even Jon knew Sansa did not want Dany as a queen and by telling her this he gave her the ace in the hole to turn the entire kingdom against her. If she announced it publicly, Jon's claim would override Dany's. How is it more dangerous? Fighting in an openfield gives Dany the advantage and if you go only by land, the Ironfleet is no longer a factor. And yes I do, she should have realized her armies were exhausted and wounded, her dragon was wounded. Understanding someone does not mean I agree with them. Cersei knew Missandei was important, she was at the meeting in Season 7 at the pit. It wouldn't end the war, no, don't assume something and use that to insult me. It would make Dany's position weaker and would lead to her making mistakes. It's psychological tactics.
@@LukaBlight69 the stormlands rejection wouldn't matter at all , because the choice of rivalry depends solely on the ruler , who has lived his life as a blacksmith and is beyond grateful to be called a lord . Westeros didn't accept dany at all , and yet they had to fight with her because jon understood her importance . Cersie losing the war is her defeat and imprisoning her would make Jamie sad . Sansa's ace was a necessity, because being jon's brother makes it important that she knows . Jon did the same thing when he announced to the wildlings that he killed mance raider , even though that would have compromised their help . The dothraki are injured and much less in numbers and even if by some miracle they survive the land attack how would they travel ONLY by land , since dragonstone is present on an island . They had to go by water nonetheless. Doesn't matter of you agree with them if there is a good reason to happened and it's consistent to the character . Also why would keeping a hostage make any difference if killing the queen of dorne and high garden , and kidnapping yara didn't make any difference ? Also even if it did , cersie already thought she won knowing that dany had a much smaller army and lost one of her dragons , meaning killing the rest of the army and the last dragon would be easy . Being cocky is one of Cersei's character trait .
Resting the army had nothing to do with Rhaegal's death. Even if they rested for 10 years, Dany would still sail to dragon stone and Euron would still be there waiting. Rhageal was just a victim of lazy writing.
The storms End scene is so stupid(and yes I see you shade of the lamp): Your telling me no one knows? It’s not like it a major stronghold that’s essential for conquering Westeros or anything... That’s the equivalent of invading Europe but not knowing who the president of France is. Also Daenerys legitimizing Gendry essential made another person who now arguably has stronger claim than her on the iron throne. Guess she kinda sorta forgot. This season goes for cheap shock value over any type of logic or sense couldve had an epic sea battle between iron fleets where rhaegal dies and we wouldve had same result
I think the reason why Cercei didn't kill Tyrion is like this: "Well he IS a Messenger... i let hom life for now" *Jamie abandons her* "Ok fuck it, BOTH die !"
You've got to wonder how this story might have unfolded had they told Emilia Clarke seasons ago the way Daenerys would end. David and Dan knew, after all. And instead of pairing the efforts of the writers with the effort of the actress to nail a more gradual and evident emergence of that dangerous Targaryen nature, they pretty much tied her hands behind her back. This character should have been on the edge a lot longer than she was (which is to say approximately six screen seconds before she blew). A lousy call on the part of the showrunners. They should have read her in.

john is a great leader but would be a bad king. a king like u say needs to handle information carefully. but a leader simply leads by example. thats why people follow him and take up his ideals. john is someone who can lead moments but not the gaps in between those major moments
Agreed. Jon is honorable and that’s obviously extremely important but he a bit too naive to handle the politics and seediness of being King in this world. It reminds me of Tywinn’s lecture to tommen about types of King’s and how a “good king” isn’t the best option. He has to be more than good and unfortunately that wasn’t demonstrated at all this season.
I fail to see how them getting married would solve anything. But then again, I have the benefit of hindsight. And let's not forget, Jon doesn't want to be king. So I'm not sure why Rick keeps harping on the fact that Jon would not make a good one.
Don't compare these dragons to Smaug... as we already saw that the thing could pierce the dragon scale before. That being said... even if Danny didn't notice the fleet, the Dragons really should have noticed the damn fleet. It was just a stupid moment.
If Rick don't like the dragons now....he'll hate them even more after the next episode! Cinematically this season is fantastic....and the story writing really bad. I hope they do better with Star Wars.
This season had amazing effects, amazing performances from the actors, amazing cinematography, and an amazing soundtrack. It is a tragedy that it is all brought down by the writing.
"what a big del it was to shoot down smaug" Well - they essentially did use the exact same weapon for Smaug and Viserion... if Laketown had had a whole fleet of ships with those things it might not have been. Even if they hadn't established that GoT's dragons are lot more vulnerable, anyway.
This fucking epsiode... The feast is such an enjoyable part (minus the random Daenerys gOeS mAd foResSHadOWiNg bs) and then the rest episode proceeds... sigh
LOL Eric was trying so hard with the entire Dany discussion. I’ve never been a fan of Dany (but I love the dragons LOL) so naturally I side with Rick in their discussion, but watching Eric defend Dany is kind of endearing I must admit. What is not endearing is how I came to dislike Jon since S7 but most especially this season. I had always rooted for him, but these last 2 seasons really tested me. Shame.

Unpopular opinion: While it felt rushed, I liked this episode. The political nature of many of the scenes reminded me of why i love GOT. It reminded me of the first 6 seasons.

Even then it still doesn't work though.
@@xanthelinhs2143 Well you can't blame them it's not like they had something to look up to see if its right
"Have you ever considered the best ruler is someone who doesn't want to rule?" Uh...no?

Poor Gendry you came on to strong buddy .
The things that are off:
Dany can’t see the Fleet even though they have a clear shot on her and she’s in the air
The fact that being a virgin isn’t even a bad thing in this universe, most highborns would want a lady to be so.
Obviously the Gendry Rivers thing and the fact proposals don’t exist in this world.
Bronn walking into Winterfell with a fucking crossbow.
This stupid idea that Dany’s a bad person for wanting to attack her enemy
That weird scene in the desert at the end.
Varys being worried about Dany's state of mind in the beginning of the episode made no sense to me. Console her! Help her! She just lost Jorah, half her army, Rhaegal injured in that battle, and she was attacked by a dragon who was once her 3rd child. She's devastated. Just help her. For fucks sake.
lol desert
People wondered how Euron got his 1000 ships, now we know, he took all the trees from kings landing!

I'm really enjoying Eric and Rick's Game of Thrones Reaction. Ser IIyn Payne was also on Arya's list.
21:37 Eric holding that laughter.
Also
The whole point of being amiable with cersie is because Tyrion loves Jamie, who loves cersie .
2- Agreed
3- To be fair, Jon is a moron.
Dany's rush to attack KL made just as much sense as Stannis' rush to attack Winterfell. I hate this season.
Really interesting discussion.
Little did Rick know that he could've left the show on a high note this episode.
Yeah.....
I guess the ships were hiding behind & in between 2 islands/hills. They show it for a split second . But still you'd think she'd be able to see them.
I still don’t get why she didn’t just wait it out so her army and dragons can recoup.

BTW it would not surprise me if it were still held by Stannis supporters.

A lousy call on the part of the showrunners. john is a great leader but would be a bad king. a king like u say needs to handle information carefully. but a leader simply leads by example. thats why people follow him and take up his ideals. john is someone who can lead moments but not the gaps in between those major moments

The first arrow that hits Rhaegal in the chest is coming directly from the front, which means the ship from which it was fired was directly in front of and below Daenerys, so how tf could you miss that!? Even more baffling is that the second arrow hits Rhaegal at 90 degrees from the side, meaning there had to be a second group of ships in addition to the main group lead by Euron, but we only see one main group in the scenes afterwards.
