Thank you SO much for making this approach at tutorial digital painting!!! Bless you!! The speed painting videos just leave us who are a new to PS to just selfishly try to figure it out for ourselves!! You're a Life saver!!!

Thanks so much, I've been attending a digipen offered class through my high school, but the class only briefly touched on huge aspects of color and how to go about it, and my drawing skills are definitely nothing to brag about, I look forward to looking through all of your tutorials

Thank you for this great instructional video. I'm a real beginner to Photoshop. I want to make sure I can learn it before I commit to buying it. So I've been looking for some intro instruction. This is the first that was basic enough that I don't feel frustrated.
You're a great teacher…and thanks for being generous enough to share your knowledge.

Thanks for the video series! I am not new to Photoshop or digital illustration but I think if you want to be a good artist and remain a good artist you should be comfortable going back to the basics; even if you already know them. It helps me stay well-rounded as an artist.

good brushes to have are in the default brushes, the hard round and the soft round. that is all you really need. the brush itself will not make you a painter. learning techniques - by watching matt's videos on ctrlpaint, for example - is what makes you a painter.

i have an advice concerning zooming in and out. i see a lot of people using the method u explained but i've found a way to zoom in/out without taking ur hand off the mouse n that's holding CTRL + SPACE and clicking the left mouse button to zoom in and CTRL + ALT + SPACE and the left mouse click to zoom out (same thing for mac users but u use COMMAND instead of CTR). if ur using the pen then u dont click with the mouse, u use the pen instead, obviously.

I'm currently using a 6x8 Graphire 4 tablet. It has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity and has a resolution of 2032 lines per inch (similar, but not the same as 2032 dots per inch, or DPI). An optical mouse tracks 400 dots per inch, and a laser mouse around 2000. Graphire 4 has similar resolution to a laser mouse but adds pressure sensitivity. Still, it's a matter of taste: go with what's comfortable to you! :)

    1. Can you have a tablet for a desktop PC?
    2. What version of photoshop do you use?
    3. I am plan going into the video game design industry also and I was wondering what type of schooling (university/college) did you take to give you such experience?

I'm looking into purchasing a tablet. I don't want to spend copious amounts of my precious dollars, but I have a keen interest in starting digital painting. Does anyone have a suggestion for what kind I should look into? I have an idea from my research thus far, but I always love to hear suggestions from experience.
Also, thank you for the incredible video! Its helped me work through the basic concepts a lot better than any other video I've seen.

    1. you can use tablets on any computer that has an USB input (thats every computer i know of)
    2. Photoshop CS5 it isn't free
    3. If you want to have any arts as a proffession you have to practice a whole lot, not just schooling. How much you practice is a very important thing, what you teach yourself is around 75% of the skill you need for drawing. Schools you should apply for things directed to one pieced illustration.
Practice is the key, im 13 and i practice 5h+ daily c:

Hi, I'm about to buy myself a Cintiq, I usually use a bamboo tablet, I've been using photoshop for a while, based on just learning as i go and small tutorials here and there on youtube.. I did animation in college in ballyfermot, Ireland.. but really what I want to do is concept art. Just wondering do you have any video's or even advice on what you had to learn or big parts other then the obviously important practice. Any help would be great. thanks for the helpfull video's on photoshop

Hey there, I am really interested in learning how to paint in Photoshop, I just recently got it (legally, unlike most people now a-days haha), but I'm 16, and I'm not completely sure if I want to commit to the 80 dollar purchase of the Bamboo Connect, I'm wondering if there is something I can do instead. Do you know of any way I could test one, or any lending service? thank you for the great videos, they are only inspiring me more

  • @RichardKulesus

@zanpaku A modern Wacom tablet has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity with a high level of resolution. A capacitive touchscreen will probably have significantly less pressure sensitivity, and low resolution, although it will permit other nifty things, like multi-touch. Wacom tablet is highly recommended, even a basic Bamboo unit!

hey thanks for ur videos. Iv watched them many times. I have a question slash problem. When im in photoshop and i try to use the eye dropper tool like you have shown. It did work, but then for some reason instead of staying on the forground color, it switched to the background color everytime i change the color. Im not sure if it is because of its the new cs6 or something i did. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon :P

I think the basic principles are similar in all the other painting programs. Though Sai for example mixes colors a lot more easier, more similar like painting. Corel Painter is more geared to drawing then PS, however I still like to draw more in PS xD

I buyed a basic Wacom table last year to do a job but, as my first time, It was terrible.i felt like the tablet doesnt have the dinamics of the paper, such as turning the paper easily, getting some effects more quickly, the need to change tools all the time, etc.I stop using It as soon as i finished it, but your video inspired me to return.I guess i just have to get used to it.(brazilian guy here, sorry for the mistakes)

    • @jl8417
      @jl8417 6 років тому

When you say "basic" tablet, did you mean non-display? If so they you probably need to know that you rotate the canvas on the program you use, turning the physical tablet around won't be the same as paper because it is a different kind of art. That's why you can make simple pen and pencil drawings just fine with printer paper but acrylic paint needs to be on a thicker material
