This woman has far surpassed the stages of an artist's career who must entertain. She is, and always has been, a messenger. Now, she has fully embraced being a messenger. If you want to be entertained, then make your own music. Until then, listen to the words. She is not just saying word after word, she is speaking full sentences. The eyes and ears are useless if the mind is blind. She doesn't need it to be a hit, Ms. Hill is hitting subconscious souls and ultimately awaking them. We have gotten into this bad habit of thinking hip-hop is all entertainment, it is awareness.

Justice Kimmons Absolutely! She reached the level of mastery over 20 years ago. She’s now creating the blueprint for the next generations to come. Nobody’s messing with her...male or female! 👑 and she’s coming back!

@TrashPanda Raccoon I understand why you might think that. Not everyone can understand what she is saying here. It's so powerful and lauryn delivers so much information so quickly it is indeed overwhelming to the naked ear. So close to the truth it is a lot to take. Personally I think this recording is extraordinary.... lyrically vocally conceptually musically. Like a machine gun of justice for all of the selective blindness of crimes of our times.

For those who don't understand why she's rapping fast: Notice in the beginning she says "consumerism running through em like a tumor in em". In that line she was referring to cancer, and malignant tumors spreads fast through out your body until you're dead. She saying all these things are running through us, and we're being programmed so rapidly. With her tempo she is giving us the illusion of the cancerous malignant tumor spreading through our bodies.

oooh yeees okay i get it. and what she is describing is the side effects of consumerism. it reminds me of the side effects of a drug cermercial. "they need the medication now". ooo :O
i never saw it like this but i get it.
its also good for a mad rap, like shes blowing off steam or somthing. and she has every right to =p

THANK YOU!!!!! This song is GENIUS in all aspects! People are saying the rap is sloppy because it's fast and slightly off beat. What I hear while listening to this is exactly how you described. Why should she have to slow it down or "dumb" it down for it to be commercially accepted. True and CREATIVE artistry is all about taking risks lyrically and musically, to which she clearly did. The theme of this song (and title) "consumerism" is well constructed all the way down to the extremely fast tempo.

This is flying over some people's heads...for the artistically adept people who knows why she is rapping in such an erratic style and still don't like this and feel that it's too pretentious for their tastes, that's totally okay too, at least you understand...but for the people that don't get it and dislike it, she is speaking this way as a reflection of our fast-paced society and materialistic possessiveness.

I think she is one of the most talented singers and rappers ever and this is truly a very interesting song. I also think she is using her fame in a good way, because she is trying to question our messed up, narcissistic era and send a message to the world of today.

This woman is a spiritually gifted godsend. I have LOVED her and her music from the day she popped up on the scene in Sister Act and I still love her!
We need to let down the veil and truly listen to her insightful truth. Talent like this that's so connected to the universal source comes along once in our life time. I employ the youth to stop, step back and truly listen and learn so that your minds can be set free to embrace the truth to make better life choices. ONE SOURCE & LOVE.

Looking at some of these comments, I really don't have to defend the artistic cleverness of this song, however, the people calling this song garbage and those who apparently like the song but feel it should be slower so people can hear the words...what song don't you have to look up the lyrics to? Also, I think there's more of a vocabulary issue versus comprehension. I guess I would think a song is garbage too, if I didn't know what majority of the words meant. Perhaps some of y'all should listen to Barney sing the A,B,C's...

      @amanSpawn00 9 років тому +6

***** That's kind of harsh, coming from someone who has ADHD(not just saying that, had it diagnosed) and I really appreciate this kind of music. Off put around the beginning, but as I got used to the speed(most rappers don't start rapping at the very first second add onto that that Lauryn is switching between 2 time signatures, it's pretty obvious how 85% of people cannot comprehend) right around 1:00 . After that, it was gold to me. Then I re-listened to it(now used to the timing and speed) and now it sounds like platinum material, like platinum placks status. So much symbolism thrown at us, to describe the negativity, useless energy only useful to the enemy, they integrate into our psyche, influence our genetic memory, changing our cellular chemistry. This is the epitome of it.

What I love about her song is that she not only chose great vocabulary, but she placed the words together I'm such a way as to confuse the listener. By doing so she alludes to the confusion of the new generation and how there is such a build up of issue that are simply ignored. The build up of all these things will lead to self destruction and I find that's quite creative way if portraying the song. Well done Lauryn !

Why someone so talented stepped aside for a while you may ask? Lauryn Hill laid low because she did not sell out. She did not sell her soul for the "millions". When you mention the "Truth" in your musik, "they" don't like that. So, she was labeled as another celeb who was trying to evade paying taxes....they said she was having psychological issues, etc, etc. I pray Lauryn Hill stays true and doesn't sell out to that nefarious musik industry and compromise her true beliefs and standards. We have enough puppets who have sold out just for the money. If you listen, she's telling you what's up in the song.

Powerful lyrics! I think one has to be partially awake to hear and welcome Lauryn's lyrics. If the listener is fully entrenched in what she raps about, she or he probably won't be open to grasping her observations. For me, the music is not so easy to fall in love with, but her delivery is impressive.

This is a phenomenal piece. Musically it's different from a lot of whats currently out there and I think the aggressive beat suits the message.
Lyrically, it's trying to say A LOT...perhaps too much for one song. It's almost a literal list of the social illnesses that plague first world/western society which is an extreme undertaking. It's not surprising this is too much for most to bother to take in, (listen to lyrics again to understand why).
The only flaw I found distracting was that her delivery on some lines was out of rhythm with the beat. It's a shame because when she syncs up, it's just magic.
The fact that this piece has flown under the radar and is thought to be irrelevant is exactly what makes it so relevant. If you're not one of the zombies, you get this. Keep your hearts and minds open.

***** Exactly it's a conceptual peice, but her point is missed on the masses. This is the first time I heard a song like this. I really like the unplugged album which got a lukewarm response, which was a great album right up there with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, songs like Mystery of Iniquity has probably the best rap verses I've ever heard on record period...

A lot of people don't get Ms. Hill. She is a contemporary Old Testament prophet. Real Old Testament prophets were vulnerable vessels, real people like all of us, but no matter how inflammatory the message the truth was not compromised. Hill forces us to take a long hard look at ourselves, and at times it can be a daunting task, because we just might not like what we see staring back at us. If hubris could smother the conscience, it would, but thank God for the tenacity of conscience.

Yes Lauryn a clever well sort piece of art work!!!!. Not designed for the average listener. Yes designed at speed to make you understand the chaotic lifestyle we lead today. We the listener must learn to understand and listen in a totally different way. Very cleverly done whether you like it or dislike it. Its disturbing nature is what you are living today and to some this is a normality. Gwan!!! Lauryn they said your mad and you were washed up I alwayz believed in you and you were to deep for that. HARDCORE STYLE!!

In her exile, she now has the freedom to drop full truth assaults, not just hinting at it. She is done dumbing it down for mainstream & the rap fans. Now that we have caught it, this song will get beyond UA-cam. We will honor her on Women's Day by sharing one of her letters.

Omg I love Lauryns messages so much since I was little I've loved her. She just came out with a sound that suits my tastes right now so well. High powered and in your face beat with a meaningful intelligent message this is like a cleansing for me IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I'VE FELT SO GOOD ABOUT SOMETHING I'VE LISTENED TO. I can't stop smiling, neurotic toxic society got me so excited and now THIS! so gooooood. People, keep up with it!
