Utter crap! The Pilot Whales can only be eaten once a week due to the contamination with high amounts of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Mercury. With this being a max amount that can be eaten, assuming that it is in fact eaten once every week, it would not make any negative impact on someone's personal wealth, especially given that the Faroese are much wealthier than most people around the world.
First of all you don’t eat that much of the pilot whales that it would probably be that much money that you would safe. Or don’t you even buy it and the just present it to everybody because they are not interested in eating it themselves or are just killing too many to eat the meat themselves? It is wrong in any way. People are shocked by the whale hunts because they can see it happening as it obviously has to be done in the open. What happens inside the abbatoirs of all the countries that don't hunt whales is far, far worse. But that's hidden away, out of sight, and so people happily carry on eating their bacon sandwiches whilst bemoaning the whale hunts. I understand a special tool is used to kill the whales quickly; it's not harpooning anymore. And they live their lives in the open sea; they're not kept in awful cramped conditions like many farm animals. I personally don't eat meat as I don't like the idea of any animal being killed but I don't begrudge the Faroese and Icelanders doing what they need to do to acquire food. Those angry about whaling should investigate what takes place on a daily basis in their own country's abbatoirs.
After working with faroese for a couple of years, i can tell that the only difference i have noticed is the audible «ah/uh» sound after a sentence every now and then
One important factor that differentiates the grind from other systematic killings of animals is that pilot whales and such species cannot be control bred like other land animals. And that factor is particularly critical against the Captain's argument that others cultures eat chicken, beef, lamb, pork etc.
Kinda hard to see it and believe it's a hunt. They pretty much guide the whales and dolphin as they go past there island onto the shore. It's kinda like calling fishing during the salmon migration hunting. To each there own I guess
For those who argue this is their way of life, it’s not an excuse. They’ve done this for hundreds of years, but they don’t need to do it anymore. People shouldn’t be excused by still doing barbaric actions like slowly killing whales alive and pass it off as “tradition.” Tradition is not an excuse. If religion isn’t justified for being traditional then neither is this.
@@VHSVulture The description says the pilot whales are killed for food. But you say contamination seriously reduces the quantity that can be eaten. I hope the catch is correspondingly reduced! I also think little of the statement that the impact on pilot whales is minimal. That's because the Faroese population is very small. To turn your argument round, you could dump serious amounts of mercury in the sea per person and say 'well it doesn't matter, the global impact is very small'. But if we all did that then the global impact would be very significant. Even if just all coastal communities globally. Ditto pilot whale hunting. So why should the Faroese award themselves a free pass?
@@artgreen6915 The catch is reduced precisely because of the pollution. That same pollution kills far more whales and dolphins per year than the Faroese people. If wasn't for the mercury, the whale meat itself is healthy to eat because it has iron, vitamins A and B and doesn't cause allergic reaction.
It’s kinda insane people still do barbaric stuff like this today and even with their kids and say “it’s tradition” while horribly mutilating a creature as smart as a whale alive.
It's weird how on every Sea Shepherds video the people in the comments condemn the Japanese, yet when Europeans kill even more whales they are suddenly not that against whale killing. Moral of the story, it's only bad if the Japanese do it, that's the ideology of your average Anglo person. They don't care about whales being killed, they just don't want the Japanese specifically doing it, which is why Japan only accounts for 10% of all whales killed every year, yet accounts for 100% of all condemnation in regards to whale killing.
Uhm, the difference is that the Japanese do it on an industrial scale, while very few, traditional European people do it. And no, there is very little backlash against the Japanese in comparison.

I eat chickens, pork and beef, bought from the store. There are jobs that allow you to do this, for which you are paid. It is a profession that only those who practice it, it is not a pleasure. That's how people end up eating meat. We don't all gather, the whole family, the whole village, the children to gather the animals in a corner and go with knives in hand to kill the animals just to eat them. We don't participate in killing them to eat meat, we don't do a show. We do not take our children to teach them what violence and brutality mean. For us it is a necessity and not a violent spectacle. What you do is not a necessity, but rather a spectacle, and it seems like a pleasure to some of you. Which is not human. Do not excuse yourself by saying that it is a necessity because it is a big lie. Don't call your people and children and the whole village out of necessity. You don't give a show and you won't be satisfied after killing thousands of whales. From my point of view, you have serious behavioral problems in society, you behave like wild people and you seem psychopathic to the satisfaction you have. God left all this to feed us. But not like that, not a show, not violence, not satisfaction. What you are doing is violence, brutality, inappropriate satisfaction, not the desire to eat to live.

It's a necessity, isn't it? They are obliged to take part in such massacres. Everything sounds like a tradition. By no means a necessity as you call it. I guess me only questions are, how do they sustain the whale population? is there a certain number of whales they kill? is there only a certain season in which they hunt? are there ever times when they could hunt, but choose not to?
There are only about 2-5 whale killings each year. And differs from 200-500 whales killed each year. We do not hunt the whales if its small packs. We do not go out looking for the whales. But kill them and eat them when they come close to the islands
@@kjartanthomassen3821 does the island have any way to monitor the population? just to make sure they arent over huntng them?
@@carsonc29 we do monitor the population, because if we’d be whaling too much, it would be illegal to do so. the whales themselves aren’t endangered, but if they were, we would stop whaling.
@@carsonc29 It is monitored, just not by the faroese. There's an estimated 800.000 pilot whales in the atlantic ocean, and the faroese kill approximately 600 a year.
It’s almost as if the local populaion know what they’re doing.
Agree with his point. Some eat cows, some worship it. Some eat pork, some abhor it. We are not short of options, just the taste and availability determines our eating habits. It just is a bigger animal, but unless they are endangered, it shouldn't be an issue.

These Sea Shepherd guys should be fighting for the sharks. People aimlessly kill them, and it's actually significantly denting their numbers.
But they think whales have some kind of new age superior intelligence, they don't give a damn about "lesser" animals!
They are fighting for the sharks.
Because those activists don't like to mess around with a chinese trawler crew. It is the same like with the anti fur activists, they threat women who wear pelts, but not bikers who wear leather.

Respekt Marnar Andreasen...
And RIP.

One important factor that differentiates the grind from other systematic killings of animals is that pilot whales and such species cannot be control bred like other land animals. And that factor is particularly critical against the Captain's argument that others cultures eat chicken, beef, lamb, pork etc.
They have one important thing in common, though, in that the killing has near to no effect on their overall population. The species is not threatened.

Pilot whales are 30% of their diet
May have been once, but now their meat is too polluted with mercury for any person to eat that much. Which we can thank the rest of the world for.
Genocide is not accurate.
It’s kinda insane people still do barbaric stuff like this today and even with their kids and say “it’s tradition” while horribly mutilating a creature as smart as a whale alive.
I think the soy boys wet themselves!
I love it.
Criminals from the Faroe Islands should be treated on the same way as they treat whales.
... what criminals?

I have a question for you. Are you a professional butcher? Are all those involved in this whale massacre professional butchers? To be clear I'm not vegan.
They all undergo training for this specific purpose, yes.
@@VHSVulture :)) So they are not fishermen or butchers. Training means where to cut the whales. Correct? But that's not really their job. They are ordinary people with different professions. They do this only on such occasions.
The whole family, neighbors, aunt, puppys and cats also participated. Just for survival, right? That is necessary for everyone to participate in order to live. It's a necessity, isn't it? They are obliged to take part in such massacres. Everything sounds like a tradition. By no means a necessity as you call it. The need manifests itself in a way totally different from the tradition and pleasure you practice.
Take a step forward in to the reality because you don't fool anyone. Unfortunately, your law allows this shit, for know.

@@annca Yes, licences are required, and you need proper training for that. www.responsibletravel.com/holidays/faroe-islands/travel-guide/whaling-in-the-faroe-islands
@@VHSVulture I'm a vegan and I actually have the opposite issue...if you are going to hunt and kill... show everybody... use everything... at least in this situation the kids and villagers understand the actions required to end a life, and the choices and violence (and maybe respect?) involved. Insulating the population from such things is how we get the pork and chicken and dairy industries in the USA, which are essentially a blight on humanity. To be clear I'm not super happy with hunting, but I'll take what you do, any day of the week, over the cellophane-wrapped lies that most people digest in the Western world.
