They had a fatal funnel with the staircase that they could have taken advantage of. I get Tim's comments about them potentially setting a fire, but they already had backup on the way and I doubt that could have materialized before backup arrived.
I think their compatibility as partners was exactly why Grey didn't make Tim the TO for Nolan. Tim wouldn't have sat still for Grey's abuse and attempting to force Nolan out in the beginning.

Nathan Fillion is a BRILLIANT ACTOR. His calm and smooth delivery just has so much AUTHORITY but also smooth and calming effect. He can delivery any line and either make it profound or comedic. I think there are few actors in Hollywood who can speak like Fillion, especially in this sort of 'peacemaker' role.
