  • A new, three pronged accommodation strategy is being launched.
Minimum standards introduced to Single Living Accommodation aims to get personnel their own space, and even an ensuite, with ventilation and no leaks.
Second, personnel in a long-term relationship will be housed just the same as those in married couples and civil partnerships. Since 2019 you’ve been able to apply, but now you’re entitled not just eligible.
And third, living spaces will be allocated based on specific needs like family size - and care requirement - rather than rank.

In the 90s..I remember one of the lads wrote to the RSPCA and asked if he could keep 4 pigs in a room with our 4man bk room dimensions.
They wrote back, said it would be inhumane.. that letter went up on the notice board.. till the QM saw it. 🤣🤣

An absolute scandal and has been for years. We have the smallest Army since Waterloo yet we cannot house them properly while putting illegal immigrants in 4* hotels for nothing! Has always been the same, My mate with his family when returning from Germany, ended in Military housing in Aldershot, old run down houses and since he had left the Army was trying to throw him out, but no local councils had any places for him, his wife and 2 kids. But they still took him to court, the Judge stated they could not make him homeless, he was there for quite awhile.

Anyone that’s served a day in the army will be sceptical about this scheme. I hope I’m wrong, because better accommodation is linked to retention and a positive mental state. The sad irony is that soldiers are often better accommodated whilst deployed overseas, and that’s absolutely unacceptable.

My recollections of Army accommodation are not the best, but knowing your average squaddy's propensity for getting hammered and trashing the place I don't see this going well. Secondly providing MQ's for non married personnel will end in tears. Again knowing squaddies's propensity for taking up with local bikes what happens when he comes back from tour to find her entertaining an opportunistic civvie ? Or indeed another squaddie ? What happens when the relationship ends as is very likely given the demands of Army life ? I can't see some" girlfriend " accepting the rules and regs of army accommodation either. One two up two down terrace had 16 living in it (with a small door from the kitchen into the coal house sleeping another)

It is an ongoing subject that is just “Marking Time” and not going anywhere while those further up the “Food Chain” probably just snap their fingers and the problem is solved.
