I love your show I felt so sorry for those little chickens', poor babies. I was wondering what you would think to put a tarp on the chickens and turkeys during a lot of rain. I figured it would keep some rain off and hopefully be a little warmer. It was just a thought. I love chickens my grandmother had them and I have fond memories. My husband and I finish your day with watching your show. Just a couple of old folks. God bless you and your family.
I think that is the downfall of the construction of the chicken tractors. No protection from rain. Even under the roof part they are on wet ground. Must be some way to construct them different. Good thing you didn't lose power.
When Debbie came through here we went to the same thing you did. We were blessed that we didn't lose any birds but we did have to move some of our pins because two of them had flooded. Sorry for your lost and yes it's always tough to be a farmer. Thankfully those in the brooder survived.
You know how it feels to be cold and wet and then coming in and taking a hot shower and curling up in a warm blanket. I bet that felt so good to those babies. ❤
What we do if we know we're getting severe weather and we have young birds in the field we take them out and we put them in one of our sheds to protect them. You have to expect to lose a lot of birds when you leave them out like that. We learned after the first time we lost a bunch of birds. They got cold and died. As a farmer, you have to learn from your mistakes.
Sorry you all lost some chickens due to the hurricane. Make sure to watch the weather updates its going to be a very busy year for hurricanes.East coast going to see several more.
Thanks. Yep, we check the weather every day. Those birds probably went to sleep at the front of the tractor at sunset when it was hotter. And then just stayed there during the night and rain. We have hundreds of birds. We only lost about 5 and saved 6 or so. So, not too had for dealing with a hurricane.
Mike I bought traps, leave those on tractor with weights on top,and spread out when I think it going to rain. I buy one at a time until I have enough to cover all my chicks.
I’m pretty sure he had tried that in the past but either the tarp was ripped to shreds or the chicken tractor was flipped. I can’t remember now. It was a while back
Mike, you should cover them with tarps in heavy rains. Maybe consider a shelf that keeps them off the ground. Will those birds roost? Bless your heart for trying so hard ❤❤❤.
Great job on saving the one's that you could. They looked pretty much done but you and Selah put in the effort. I could tell Selah didn't have much hope for them but she is a trooper and stands by her daddy. It's good for her to see that pay off. Sometimes our best efforts just don't get it but we do the best we can. Farming is hard at times and there are losses that happen. Just have to get up and keep going. No way to move that many because of weather. I love you guys working together to get it done. We need more family farms and togetherness to make this world work. God bless you Mike and your family hope y'all continue to bless others with your knowledge and your Godly family values.
Every time the weather gets really bad, my animals are gathered together and put in a safe, dry location.i never leave them out in the cold, wet mess. They could die. A chicken tractor isn't good enough.
@@rcjo2I know you are trying to solve the problem..I get it. My guess is the wind of a hurricane would rip the tarp to shreds let alone make it extremely difficult to secure.
I have the opposite problem in the high desert. Heat can be the downfall of my birds. I have to make sure there’s plenty of water and shade. When temperatures get too high plenty of water and shade help my chickens survive extreme conditions. My hens will stand in kiddie pools I put under the trees.
I've been watching you for a few years and I always love your videos. There is always so much kindness, love, warmth, and of course helpful information. Hurricane Debbie hit here too but we skated by with just flooding.
So glad the coldest chickens got better after you worked with them and warmed them up. Your family works well together. I can hardly believe how long that Hurricane lasted. It went everywhere. Thank God you're all safe. Amen. 😊🙏🕊️
I know in the past from big storms have came we've just let them out because they have better chance when chance to escape bad inclement weather that's the thing about keeping animals as making sure they have adequate shelter from storms stuff happens. That is called farming ❤
Thanks so much!... I was just telling the family that I want to visit the Netherlands one day. Any suggestions on what places I should visit there, if we get the chance to go?
I've learned.... if the predator can't see what they are grab ie after...... they won't..... I free range ducks and keep them in cage at night. I had one killed even in cage by mink. Don't worry took care of that. But I started using tarps. It blocked direct contact but also made it look like a trap. So far so good.
Sorry for the loss of your birds, thankfully those you heated up recovered well. Greensboro, NC had trees down and flooding as well. But. It is Hurricane season till Thanksgiving!
Mike and Selah you did a good job trying to save them. The heat lamp and hair dryer were a great idea to try to save them. I was amazed by the recovery of all in the brooder. Way to go!
You have a Beautiful loving family! Everyone helped with no attitude. Believe in each other and help each other always.. This is a wonderful reflection of a Mother and Father's love for their family!!❤❤ So happy all is better!

HI MIKE GREAT JOB I THINK YOU COULD(SUGGESTION) TWEK THE CHICKEN TRACTOR IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MOVE YOUR BIRDS IN HEAVY RAIN SUCH AS MAKE THE TRACTOR HIGHER FROM THE GROUND TO PUT IN A TALL PERCH BOX SO THEY WANT DROWN AND A TARP FOR EXTRA PROTECION FROM THE RAIN. LOVE YALL VIDEOS, GLAD YALL MADE IT SAFELY THROUGH THE STORM AND IT HAS PASSED.
The little yellow chick did a fine job of modeling, "This is how a healthy and happy chick behaves." He looked a little surprised, though, when you came back and all the Cornish cross chicks were on their feet! So much taller than him. Hope he did OK.
My step mom would always put finger nail polish on the ones that we nursed back to health to keep an eye on them till it wore off but I’m glad you didn’t let the ones got by a predator bother you
Tarp would have probably blown right off in the hurricane winds. We raise hundreds of birds, so to only lose 5 or so and we saved 6 or so, is really pretty good for dealing with a hurricane.
We just went through Hurricane Beryl. Lost all food for the second time in a month, and lost light for a week, but that is the downfall of living on the huricane pathways. Don't like it though. We finally got a generator, but they wouldn't deliver it because the huricane was coming but it didn't show up till the next day. Sorry for all the loss of food your way and the loss of food our way.
Please I hope you accept my excuses because of the hard things some people say to you. And then doesn't matter if what they say is true ore false. G'D BLESS and greetings with love from Inge Noordam ( theNetherlands/Europe).
Have you tried putting straw or hay in the chicken tractors so they aren’t standing in water? Thats what I do when a heavy rain comes. Even if it means I can’t move them until the storm is over. I heard Joel S talk about it once.
I feel for you. The very first time I got birds I didn't know anything. I had them in a covered dog kennel. The first night when it was time to put them out something pulled the 6 chickens and 2 ducks through the fence😂
Im on the coast next to Camp Lejeune and it has been raining since Tuesday. It's Sunday night and we are having severe thunderstorms and under flash flood warnings. Hopefully your animals make it through this bad weather.
They should have been on higher ground, with a tarp over then back into the shed with a heat lamp, I used a hair dryer too as they get wet then chilled
We have a Micah, Josiah, and Selah in our family also!! We have 8 kiddos and Selah is our only daughter! All 8 of our kids' names end in "ah" also. So cool! We also have a Noah, Zachariah, Elijah, Isaiah, and Zephaniah...and our little Jonah is in heaven. Just found your channel, but I love your little family!
Hey Mike I see you’re gotten so much hate messages on here I’m so sorry people let their emotions speak for them instead of thinking about the situation. I hope you understand I am not criticizing you, living in Florida we have had our share of hurricanes and also use tractors. We also put our tractors close together like you did and then we tarp them. It really does work if you tarp them to the ground not just on top. The secret is to not let the wind get under it. Once we figure out what direction the wind is blowing we leave it loose on the leeward side. It’s not great for ventilation but usually when you go check on them on the leeward side I like to “fluff” up the tarp to exchange some air. Sometimes we still loose some to poor air quality or the stubborn one that insist on sitting under a drip but it has really helped out our losses. Hope this helps. And know I only have intentions to help out not be mean.
Isn't there a way to build a chicken coop and tractor up off of the ground and a lid that doesn't allow the rain to come in. Also, a heat lamp of some kind. especially when there are storms coming. Just wondering. Thanks for sharing.
Could u try to build something like pergolas (out of scraps) that u could use for multi purposes, but in rainy season maybe even have chains with hooks to hang cages with bottoms. Maybe make some walls/ supports to prop tractors on I had issues 1year with snow drifting over a couple enclosures & suffocating 2 goats. The 1st afternoon they were fine, the next day they were dead No matter what, life happens I always put bottoms on my tractors, wider mesh tho helped with predators if they flipped tractors or if on uneven ground
you have a great farm going there,, i love watching channel and i am generally sad for you when you lose chicken or turkeys,, i was thinking maybe the A-frame chicken tracker might be better to use on your farm,, just wondering why you dont switch? i am glad that little group of wet birds made it,, have a blessed week
Why didn't you invest in a couple of tarps to cover the tractors and give more complete protection from the rain? Could have installed tarps when you know a storm is imminent.
Chicken tractors have to be revised ! Doing the same thing iver and over expecting another outcome but not changing process is insanity . My heart aches for those animals . You gotta make big changes !!!
It has always amazed me how often chickens and even worse, turkeys, just don't seem to have the sense to get in out of the rain. They'll just stay out in the rain and die, even if there is shelter available.
Job well done, nursing the harmed chicken back to health! ❤❤❤ Would it help to have a couple of sticks or boards, in the chickentractors, that the chicken can sit on during heavy rain? Sticks/boards that are under the roof, but above the ground? 🐥🐤☔😊
Can long sandbags like the ones that keep the drafts from coming through the doors be heavy enough to keep the gaps on the bottom of the cages closed from the predators?
When it rain you need to put a tarp over them so that don't get wet
Tarps 1st cost money & wind may make the tractors FLY
Super to see the chickens came back to life and survived ❤❤
Aww poor babies. Remember farming isnt for the faint of heart, but the good days always outweigh the bad days.
Tarps??
I love your show I felt so sorry for those little chickens', poor babies. I was wondering what you would think to put a tarp on the chickens and turkeys during a lot of rain. I made a elevated platform in my chicken tractor so birds could get on it so they out water and put tarp over them leaving sides open for air
I think that is the downfall of the construction of the chicken tractors. No protection from rain. Even under the roof part they are on wet ground. Must be some way to construct them different. Good thing you didn't lose power.

Idea: plan ahead if the storm. Move the chickens to a dry safe enclosure before the storm. Thanks for your videos. God bless!
Every time the weather gets really bad, my animals are gathered together and put in a safe, dry location.i never leave them out in the cold, wet mess. They could die. A chicken tractor isn't good enough.
We (like others, including Joel Salatin) have way too many animals to put them up each time it rains.
How about tarping the tractors? That wouldn't cost much and would help a lot. @@MikeTheFitFarmer

Surely some preventative things clould have been done - a tarp over the top, a pallet for them to get up out off the wet ground.
