THIS is why I love youtube. I can see these cats playing together or watch an old live video of Frank Zappa anytime I want. One of life's best pleasures.
EJ at 4:48 brings me back to this video everytime. Anton is solid and yet at times things don't seem to be in sync as these musicians have different approaches, you can really notice this when they're all in a room together. If you listen to Oz Noy, you will know they create on the spot. Real live power. Some nights things work better than on other nights. Try it sometime.
People comparing the two have to understand that EJ is completely out of his comfort zone. Schizophrenic is very different from what EJ normally plays. That said, Oz is a total bad ass and this was the greatest show I've ever seen. Even non musician friends I brought along loved every minute of it.
Hmm. I think that's like saying BB King sounds the same as always. Eric sounds like Eric - what you hear, the note choices, the sound...it's his signature, his language.
guys come in!!! EJ is great its not about arguing bout how his tone was better or his records its bout the musicianship and i bet alot of u dont have the chord theory knowledge that he has or the ear so just listen with the set of ears u love music with not the judgemental set...........................
Oz = listening to the band. EJ = listening to himself. And I say that as someone who grew up loving EJ and thinks he's one of the most important electric guitarists who ever lived.
Why does everyone argue about who is better? Music is to be played together and to build off what the other is playing. I would like to know how many posters are guitartists...
I think it's kind of silly saying one is better than the other - it's just two great guitarists enjoying each others music and having fun - watch Oz's face on some of EJ's leads - he's just grinning and lovin' every minute of it, and EJ has said himself in interviews that he digs Oz's playing. It's an excercise in mutual admiration and respect...
I've been a fan of EJ for a crazy long time, but Anton's riffs here are more interesting to me.. EJ seems to recycle too many familiar lines in his playing these days.
BUT, tone is entirely subjective. ej's only weakness is in not adding more treble (on his guitar, amp, whatevahz...) when he plays a gibson. other than that, i LUV his cello-like tones, they're quite addicting. on the other hand, oz could use either less treb, or more bass & mids (well, for my tastes)...
@DrummerRF cause only a fool would deny that this drummer's got groove, and i dont like people who go critiscizing on youtube cause thats just plain not nice and oz noy would never have gotten him if he wasnt any good. ergo, hating is for bieber fans
sounds like ej thinks all that's required to play "outside" is the sidestepping of the "in" notes, most often without altering the same box or scale shapes (&/or runs) in place of actually inventing/creating melodies. what makes it more obvious is his framing it in between his usual blues/rock-styled (from pentatonic to scalar) runs, with the substitutions that are recognizable to his style. also, he doesn't sound as comfortable (nor as confident) as oz does. BOTH have their +'s/-'s, tonally...
You just contradicted yourself in the worst way. That's not a weakness, it's his TONE. And take it from someone who has played with him on more than one occasion, it is his tone on Gibson, Gretch, Fender Tele, Strat and Jaguar. You are right, tone is ENTIRELY subjective. Leave it at that.
I am one of the world's biggest EJ fans (as my username implies), but I have to wonder... what band was HE playing with tonight? He was just playing some old regurgitated licks and totally out of pocket. Sad. He just didn't "feel it" that night. Oh well.
i didn't say it was easy. &, oz bein' more comfortable with his own music & band are a given. don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of ej; i was simply making an observation. it in no way diminishes his talent, nor his HIGHLY identifiable sound/style. i'm just participating in the guitarists & lightbulb changing activity we're so famous for...
Michael Lawrence I get it. He’s disappointing. You’d like to think somebody as famous would be able to find the pocket. That’s all. It has always bothered me; half the facility and twice the feel and his reputation as a master might be deserved.
wow. all these comments about EJ are silly. it's just two dudes who can play guitar really well jamming, Instead of talking as much shit, how about we try and learn and jam and getting better and take what works.
Without Eric's effort in adding some melodic texture and Roscoe's rhythmic bass line, this groove based jam tune can sound boring and seems to go nowhere particularly when the drummer's beat is behind like Anton is here and Noy's syncopation is quite sloppy too.
What do you think he's famous for if not his great playing? It's harder, but might be more productive working on something creative of your own, rather than putting down great players on youtube.
@andygjata I thought UA-cam was for commenting. And I didn't say is is not good or he has no groove. Well then let's say it differently. I am sure he has groove and that he is skilled, but I do not prefer the way he plays this peticular song at all. He took away some crucial parts of the song in my opinion. I would rather prefer Keith Carlock for this song. Or Dave Weckl. But I prefer him for every song so that statement is invalid.
@mirthguitar I agree, Johnson's always been stilted to me. obviously a master technician, but to be completely honest his concerts have always been a bore to me. he needs to relax. take some lessons from chris duarte or something.
EJ is an amazing player from a technical and melodic standpoint. His chordal stuff is also spectacular. But he does tend to rush, which obviously is a buzzkill for groove. Oz really lays back. I was going back and forth a bit here on YT about EJ and his lack of groove, and my interlocutor was trying to cast EJ's rushing as some sort of 4D chess, and I just wasn't buying it. Steve Vai or Wayne Krantz, maybe, but then they've demonstrated a real commitment to good time always.
It's kind of funny. It sounds like they're not even playing the same song. I know the schtick of the song is to be inappropriately diverse, but Eric, c'mon! It's like he's injecting Cliffsofdoverisms everywhere he can.
Sorry.. guys.. flame me or whatever this is just as boring and pointless as the EJ concert I saw last night.. everything he does sounds the same nothing new. I have been a fan since Tones came out and I used to watch him at Ray Hennings jamming on old fender twins.. boring..
THIS is why I love youtube. I can see these cats playing together or watch an old live video of Frank Zappa anytime I want. One of life's best pleasures.

Who'd be a musician these days? An informal jam at a local bar turns into a worldwide forum on whether EJ has still got it.
Oz Noy is incredible & Eric is just a Cherry on Top of the Cake !!! ...
It's Oz's gig. YOU go feel comfortable sitting in on it.
I just have to say, thank you for filming and uploading this video. I swear I sent this message before a while back.
Edit--Anton Fig is the drummer...duh, I meant the other guitarist on stage...
Oh man I bet that was a really fun gig to watch. LOVE this video!
Wonderful musicians... a joy to watch, especially Roscoe Beck!
Theres a flip... Eric Johnson playing a Gibson through a fender amp.
Damn that's sweet...thx for posting
Hmm. I think that's like saying BB King sounds the same as always.

This is amazing playing on all the guys part. Oz was in his element but Johnson brought his unique voice to the song, which is no easy feat.
Oz = listening to the band. EJ = listening to himself. And I say that as someone who grew up loving EJ and thinks he's one of the most important electric guitarists who ever lived.
that was my thoughts exactly listening to this
Why does everyone argue about who is better? Music is to be played together and to build off what the other is playing. I would like to know how many posters are guitartists...
Reallly cool! Great to hear this a see it!
Awesome!

Here Eric Johnson's timing problems become obvious ...
Funny, because that was I was thinking as the video started. What a TONE!!!
Brilliant, brilliant stuff :)
Enjoy the music! I love Ej and his music.
I prefer Keith Carlock
Eric's playing here sounds a lot like his old Electromagnet days - very cool...
I COMPLETELY AGREE. Saw them many times in Austin. Love this.
Wow! Thanks to the OP.
Yup.... Amazing!
I think, guys, that the reason EJ's playing sounds a bit restricted is that he's reading it as he goes, probably hadn't practiced at all, maybe?
I've been a fan of EJ for a crazy long time, but Anton's riffs here are more interesting to me.. EJ seems to recycle too many familiar lines in his playing these days.
This is my guitar homework... Lol
BUT, tone is entirely subjective. ej's only weakness is in not adding more treble (on his guitar, amp, whatevahz...) when he plays a gibson. other than that, i LUV his cello-like tones, they're quite addicting. on the other hand, oz could use either less treb, or more bass & mids (well, for my tastes)...
omg! anton fig from letterman's studio band!
is that pog oz is using that sounds like a synth. sounds like this could have been written for jb blow by blow cd
what's that sick effect Oz is using? a vibe?
@ruexp1975 Ha! Loved that comment...and so true as well :)
Oz tore him a new one...
Oz canes it!!
simplemente delicioso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why eric johnson?? LoL
Nice Chemistry !! Cool Groove !!
@DrummerRF cause only a fool would deny that this drummer's got groove, and i dont like people who go critiscizing on youtube cause thats just plain not nice and oz noy would never have gotten him if he wasnt any good. ergo, hating is for bieber fans

Jeff Beck would be proud!
@andygjata How would you know troll?

Sometimes, even the worst technique, with a big heart...steals mine...and in this case, technique wins.

That's right Ozzie, show him who's boss :)

This performance miss Keith Karlock!!
OZ is really great guitar player, I like his style better than Eric's, but he's pretty good too !
@ruexp1975
Yup. It's funny how when two musicians get together all the non-musicians turn it into a contest.
4:58 that is so good its DISSGUSTING!!!!!
wow. all these comments about EJ are silly. it's just two dudes who can play guitar really well jamming, Instead of talking as much shit, how about we try and learn and jam and getting better and take what works.
Haha Oz noy going note for note with eric..SAV

Johnson got his ass kicked right there
trio with keyboards
Or maybe he's just sounding like Eric Johnson!
ta de sacanagem este eric Johnson...
RUSSIA LISTENS TO OZ NOY!!!!!!!

Oz was great and Eric didn't have the groove or nothing for that matter.

@rakmanenuff2 well keith carlock is way better....this drummer seems me ^_^
It's kind of funny. It sounds like they're not even playing the same song. I know the schtick of the song is to be inappropriately diverse, but Eric, c'mon! It's like he's injecting Cliffsofdoverisms everywhere he can.
