I too am an owner of this majestic machine! I enjoy it for what it is. Not fast but fun to cruise around on, styling still ahead of the times! Yes, you get lots of onlookers with approving smiles with these unique bikes. Don't get one if you prefer to be an another of the Harley Sheepeople (as I tend to call them). You will stand out from the crowd at any cafe or gathering.

I have a 98 R1200C, K&N air filter only engine mod, it has a TON or torque, and gets up to speed FAST. The Brembo brakes are incredible... Truly stop on a dime brakes... I wonder what bike this guy was reviewing XD

Sure there’s no arguing with taste, but this guy’s review is so outlandishly at odds with reality, I can only conclude that he was paid by Harley to disseminate drivel. From another delighted owner of one of the best and most comfortable machines I’ve owned in 46 years of biking.

I also own a R1200C Montauk. It is not a racing bike, but it has heaps of power and guts, especially in todays environment. Love the style. Extremely comfortable. I am able to do 1200km in 1 day easily (Canberra - Brisbane)
I've ridden many other bikes and this one is the best by far!!!

Old video, but I thought I'd chime in since I just had a one hour test ride on a 2000 model. It's at a local dealership, just sitting there, all shiny and "completely different". Yes. It is. Beautifully different. The manager said to take it out and have a good spin, since he suspected it wasn't selling because of stupid minded reviews by either the un-qualified or just plain prejudiced people.
I do admit that it is sooo different so as to almost be its own worst sales agent. You have to WANT this look.
Not one criticism in this video is at all accurate. This motorcycle is gutsy enough to pass other vehicles with ease, and more than comfortable at all speeds and in the corners. The braking is plenty adequate. The build quality is superb.
If I were in the market for a "different" motorcycle, it would be in the top five to look at, all for "different" reasons. In no order of preference - 1) Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom (I have the 650 now), 2) 1978-1982 BMW R100RT, and 3), this one. 4) Honda Goldwing, 5) Honda Valkyrie.
Each one will have its detractors and arguable points. But, on the whole, no better motorcycles have ever been built. Lots of 'em just as good, but none actually better.

@OutnBacker...totally agree with your comments. IMO he gave the bike a rubbish review, simply because HE didn't like it...never a good thing to do, if you want to give an objective review on a motorcycle. Personally, I've fallen in love with the 1200CL, which just happens to appeal to me on so many levels. Glad you love the 1200C...It's all about 'horses for courses' I reckon! Safe riding mate! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (2020) to all. Regards, Mitch

I also own a Montauk and, like all of the other reviews, agree that it is a fabulous motorcycle. Excellent torque and extremely comfortable.
    Just beautiful.

I really don't understand this gentleman's review I've owned the BMW R 1200 CL and C and the brakes are amazing the handling is incredible and it's just a fun bike to ride. As if this gentleman was paid to bash the product. How well to each his own

Actually, I have owned a R1200C for a number of years. I find the bike to be quite torquey and nice running. As far as comfort? I think it is very comfortable for all day rides even 500 miles a day and |I am in my fifties so comfort is important to me. Not sure what you traditionally ride but this is a very comfortable bike..

I've had 2 of these . Comfort ? More comfortable than any car I've driven on long distance - ( 1000 mls in 3 days ) unbustable engine , obviously NOT your kind of bike.
Hey there are bikes for all types of rider. This one is definitely mine.

Thank God it isn’t a Harley. I love my 98 R1200C. It has plenty of spunk and unlike the harley the throttle is more that the volume control.

This guy doesn’t know what he talking about, he is comparing it with a Japanese multi, at 74 I’ve had loads of bikes many more than him and I have to say this is the best most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned. No it’s not hugely fast but it’s not designed to be its a cruiser, it will happily cruise at 60 70 80 mph all day long in absolute comfort, it is super smooth I can’t fault it in any area. Unfortunately this road tester thinks he has to compare everything he tests with a Japanese rocket machine. His inexperience shines through he should not have tested it, Someone who understand these type of machines should have done it, these bikes need to be ridden over a period of time to appreciate them, you can tell he was struggling with the gear change and throttle but eventually you master it and then realise what a superb machine it is. This guy needs to get a job that suits his skills better but nothing to do with motorcycles.

Likewise, and these things are tuned for low-end grunt, not 'sport bike' performance, but still more than enuff power, superb handling, and mucho comfort compared to it's HD 'equivalent'.

I used to own one of these - I wish I had kept it but my mortgage was killing me! A truly great motorcycle , excellent handling and brakes and of course that LEGENDARY BMW reliability. This guy is either drunk or stupid and dosent know his arse from a hole in the ground!

  • @gat1240

This guy is way off and reading the comments most others agree. This bike is fast enough for most people. He says it has no character in acceleration. I guess he means it doesn't make a harley noise ,so what ? Never understood why Harley drivers like to gun the engine between shifts and while stopping. That's sooooo juvenile. As far as the riding position goes, the foot pegs are where they should be not tucked under you high like most modern bikes, your calves are at a 90 degree angle to your thighs and you can stand up quite easily. Your head is directly above your spine, not titled forward which cause neck strain. Brakes are fine and the bike doesn't tilt forward when braking. Seems everyone that owns this bike likes it, in fact loves it. I looked at many other bikes and found them just not worth trading for, so Mr. Reviewer thanks but you're wrong.

It's never gonna be as cool as a Harley? I guess that would be easier to agree with if there weren't as many cookie-cutter Harley's on the planet as there are grains of sand.

The bars are too far forward. I have the police bars, and Corbin seat with backrest, and it's so comfortable I worry some times about falling asleep on it.

Don't know why you bothered you were against it from the start, you tried to review it as if it was a sports bike, it's a gentle cruiser it's a bike for a Sunday ride out, or a bit of touring, in future get someone who likes cruisers to road test them not someone who expects all bikes to be CBRs
