Unlocking the Old Testament Part 35 - Ecclesiastes

  • One may disagree with some of Ecclesiastes as Solomon, the author, has reached the end of his life and is disappointed, disillusioned and depressed. It doesn’t mean that God has the same attitudes. Solomon had been in a position to have or do anything he wanted. Now he felt that everything had been pointless. Some pastimes are acceptable but if they are the main focus in life, they will not satisfy, they will not interpret life for you. This book is old but it speaks to the modern person who is ever seeking something to stimulate him/her. If we find meaning to life first, then we are ready to enjoy other experiences. Solomon observed multiple situations ‘under the sun’, and David Pawson says that life can’t be lived under the sun - you need a much higher perspective to see what life is all about. Solomon’s other limitation was that he looked only at this life. He never mentions the next. It is only when you see life in light of heaven’s perspective and this world in light of the next that you begin to see what life is all about. In 2 chapters, Solomon mentions God and becomes positive in outlook. God is weaving a pattern out of your life. Fear God and obey him. People are foolish to leave the Maker’s instructions on the shelf. Life can be worthwhile.

    My solo reading of the Bible particularly in Ecclesiates, was fruitless until coming across the teaching of David Pawson. We are so blessed to have his teaching available to repeatedly review to make our reading of the Scripture overflowing with fruit so that when we are finally saved, we'll not be shy to meet such as he. So thankful.

    In the first chapter I found secular humanism in ecclesiastes ... Solomon was ahead in time than his atheist theorist.
    I started reading this book while I was down and out, Luckily I went to wenesday bible study before proceeding. We sang "I must tell Jesus" and my spirit was so lifted and able to get out the ditch I was stuck. Thank You LORD for your people and the song you sent for me after I cried to you in frustration.

  • @maddi62

    What’s really eye-opening about this talk is how stuck in a box even the best of Christians actually are, and unable to think in any other, deeper way. ‘Everything is vanity’ is remarkably similar to the ‘everything is suffering’ of Buddhism, and far from being pessimistic, it points to the way to finding true fulfilment, which involves calming the spirit, quietening the voices that provide a running commentary in our heads, discovering humility (and I say discovering rather than adopting because it is not as easy as to simply decide to be humble), and acquiring the ability to let go the things that we cannot control. Everything else is a stressful running around like a headless chicken, and that includes much of what goes on in modern Christian practice. Peace

      Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:

      But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
      Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
      Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
      Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
      While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
      In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
      And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
      Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
      Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
      Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
      Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
      And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
      The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
      The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
      And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
      Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
      For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
