I trained a lot with the wing before going with the paddle, you are absolulty right to do so. I started downwinding 1 year ago and I try to practice the most I can. I tried 3 ways to organize my downwinders, a friend drive me, I go upwind with a wing or I just walk. Finally I choose to walk most of the time. By doing that I can easily try different foils by doing few little downwinders or abort the session if the conditions turn bad. I will do more upwind with the wing later, currently my board has not enough volume when I have the wet wing on my back. Obviously I have access to very long beaches without cliff, it is required to be able to walk few kilometers. It could look boring but downwinding is so cool, I feel no lazy at all to walk upwind.
Stocked to hear your story. Yes it’s a logistic thing and sailing upwind is also not my favorite thing to do. Plus I have to drive one hour each way. So it’s just not something I can do so often. But… there will be a video of SUP foiling downwind without a wing one day.
