Been hot here in So. Cal also. Many days around 105. My avocado trees are also under 30% shade and have continued growing.

Been a cool summer (seemed to me anyway) low alt inland farther NorCali, barely topped 105 a few times, usually get couple weeks of 110 plus. I don't do shade cloth, most of my young avos are thriving but they have tree shade after 2pm or so, watered every 2 to 3 days and wood chip mulched.

Here murrieta, ca had to add shade cloth to my Hass. Most of my new growth got toasted. Doing a lot better with shade cloth all around and growing strong now.

I live down here at Lake Chapala, Jalisco State in México. It has been one of the coolest summers and rainiest that I can remember in years. It stays in the mid 70´s, we get most of our rains only at night and it has been raining almost every single night for the past month and a half. You need to wear a sweater in the mornings and in the evenings. It has been mostly over cast for weeks and weeks. Powdery mildew is a major problem this season. We do most of our vegetable growing in the winter dry season and dry spring, the rains start up mid-June. But boy things are green and gorgeous down here with super cool weather for the month of August. I can´t complain, my fruit trees are doing marvelously.

I love your videos. I am in a great position coming up in the fact that i am looking for a house. I have to love in the north part of the valley since i work in carefree and my husband works downtown. We lived in the tatum and bell area of n. Phx for years. That is where we will be again but now i know exactly what i want in my yard and how to do it. I know from watching you that im working on the yard first and placing my orders for trees, bamboo and worm casings as soon as i know how much a what i need since it might take awhile.
This makes looking at himes totally different....or should i say, looking at yards. Lol

Yes leave the weeds they are beautiful. Very good for the environment. Provides shelter for native species. Consider throwing milk weed out there also. Even creates food for birds.
Also cools your yard down and doesn't contribute to heating up the city.

Same thing I'm thinking, "plant the weeds you want or get the weeds you don't", I haven't figured out ground cover crops yet but I use heavy wood chip mulch which really helps, especially reducing watering.

Beautiful plants, inspiring as always, Shamus. I'm wondering, do you use any specific rootstock for your mangos?
Obviously most that are available are Florida trees (generally Turp rootstock), but I have seen some nurseries that do Manila rootstock and know Manila's to be overall one of the most tolerant trees with disease/root conditions/overhead water, and so on. I have also seen in the case of Maha Chanoks and Mallika and other Thai varieties that sometimes they are simply air layered or polyembryonic seedlings.
Your videos are very informative as always, cheers to your success with the Jambu/June plum/Jackfruit and other "more finicky" tropicals!

Love to see these lil tours to see what's working and how, gives me ideas in sort of similar climate 9a far NorCali low alt inland. Lazy my ass--I see a lot of work involved especially the fabric changes. I envy the flood irrigation, that's a major asset and it's the only thing that completely eradicates gophers which are one of my biggest problems...my cat's usually get them eventually but a lot of damage can occur. Phoenix has relatively poor quality river water I understand but it get's the job done.

I have had success with apples, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, and pomegrates. Are there any tropical fruits that could make it through our colder winters? Thanks!

Is this the tropical pit that you dug out 3' of native soil and filled back in with perfect soil? ua-cam.com/video/o7OorlcN6C8/v-deo.html What is your ph testing at right now? Spot on with the ground cover...living mulch is better than wood chips. The mango I bought from you (3 gal) last Fall was not babied this year by shade cloth, is in full sun and is looking great. Okinawa spinach covering the base made all the difference along with some sulpher. Will be interesting to see the fruit set after a full year in ground...thanks for the update!

You better get use to the hottest summers! You should look at other countries who are first world countries on how to deal with this climate and climate change. I hope you are not that 35 to 40% of Americans that do not believe in climate change. It is not a hoax as your leader says.
