I saw this on SNL when I was 12 years old, and when they were done, I thought, what the hell did I just see, but the song stuck in my head, and I wanted more.
And you don't even the realize how badly your mind was warped by that exposure to THIS. I hope you were you able to find employment and make something of your life.
@@The_DC_Kid Sorry. I started commercial fishing in the 80’s right out of high school, worked my way to captain of a 60’ trawler by 30 years old. Worked as a bridge builder and managed a 300 acre oyster farm before I retired. I started scrubbing fish holds and unloading when I was 13 years old. I hate lazy mother fuckers and take being called one even joking are fighting words.
Devo on SNL was mind bending! We taped it and watched it daily for years. I got to know Bob 2 and Mark really well and worked with them. Very cool guys..
Devo was waaaaaay ahead of it's time! I remember watching them on the late night show Fridays and they didn't disappoint! But being a high teenager probably made the performance that much better!
I saw this when I was about five or six. My parents let me stay up on Saturday to watch SNL with them. My mom worked in Westwood by UCLA back then and I'd visit Westwood a lot in those days when she went to pick up her paycheck, then to visit a pizza joint my dad invested in. I'd hear DEVO all over Westwood because the students were crazy about DEVO. I'd hear the b-side "Be Stiff" on the college radio station. This was '78-'79. Then in '80 Devo had a huge hit with "Whip It". I've been a fan as long as I can remember. They were just ingenious.
Unfortunately in this day and age, a band like Devo wouldn't even get a record deal. So sad. There's no REAL ARTISTRY in music anymore. That's why I'm here on UA-cam seeking aout all this great stuff.@@drsloanski
Great editing, this, b.t.w. ... They opened up their show with this @ their “official” debut in NYC @ the long defunct but legendary Max’s Kansas City in ’78 and Bowie M.C.’d ... Great memories, that! t.y.v.m. for this @Thiago Arriola. Best wishes.
I wish that they would authorize the release of the original SNL performance. The song was preempted by film showing little boy in hazard-suit, wandering through the neighborhood.
The fact that Cassell and Mothersbough thought these song arrangements would be cool at the time speaks volumes cuz they transcend generations to this day.❤
The mainstream music business doesn't take chances on the "Out of the Box" artists anymore. Only what's in the algorisms and generic. Bands like Devo, Madness, the Talking Heads, The Cure, Lena Lovich, Elvis Costello Ian Dury, Adam Ant, Culture Club, Romeo Void, Selektor, the Bad Brains, Suicide.....please stop me, the list goes on. All these revolutionary great artists wouldn't stand a chance today. Music is in a very sorry state.
Love Devo, but this had to be the worst song to listen to while tripping. It's all fun and games until this comes on and then you start existentially questioning if we really are men.
I wouldnt say ahead of their time...they were on an alternative timeline.......progression isn't necessarily something that produces a greater thing...they were artistically more interesting. Well that's what it says on the side of this Cornflakes packet!
2023 and the world is still not ready for Devo, but needs them more than ever.

@@The_DC_Kid I have worked harder labor, more hours, and saw more life, than anything you probably ever thought about doing.

Ditto.

Saw DEVO in the mid 70s in a night club in Atlanta. Damn they blew the roof off! Still got the balloon they gave out as souvenir.
DEVO.... So ahead of their TIME ! 😁🕗👍🏻👍🏻
2024 and this is STILL ahead of its time
2024 and they’re still weird

How awesome is this?!?!? Music these days doesn't the same authenticity!!
Unparalleled. The original concept-art band.

@@luannabbate2624So true, or they’d be in a super small label or Bandcamp. Fortunately there’s a TON of amazing stuff on UA-cam. Enjoy the journey!

Waaaaaaaay ahead of their time. Or behind it. Or something.
Let’s see how long it takes SNL to take this down
Still up after 5 months, I have the full uncut version and I might upload it to my channel.
@@Musicalmane I think that what SNL has blocked us the booji boy stair sequence (which they dont even own!)

Where is the black and white footage from? I don't think I've seen that show.
10/20/78 - Showplace, Dover, NJ.
I couldn’t say for sure, but at the 1:07 mark it may have been footage from an Akron, OH show.
